Title: Plot digging Options
Post by: DavidW on October 30, 2004, 18:11:59
On the allotment where I reside, I’ve noticed that there are many soil treatments over the autumn /winter period. What would be the best option: -

1.   Dig over the plot and leave uncovered until after winter then add the compost / manure
2.   Dig over the plot, add compost / manure and leave uncovered.
3.   Dig plot, add compost / manure and cover with plastic until spring.

I personally use No 3 method, but I’m not sure if I’m doing things right.

Thanks
David

Hi Hugh, could you explain why you picked option 3, the only reasons that i can think of is
1/stopping the leaching of nutrients.
2/the heating up of the soil in the spring to allow the sowing of seed  and plants early.
Will the plastic still allow the soil to brake down the same as if it had no plastic on, and will the soil have to be cultivated to a fine tilth to allow sowing.
3/ would you plant through the plastic, and use the plastic as a mulch to stop weeds growing all year long.
thanks,
windy.
