Title: Garlic in Pots?
Post by: sandersj89 on October 30, 2004, 12:11:16
With all the wet weather recently and the fact that I have heavy soil I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and plant my garlic in pots and place in a cold frame until the ground dries up a little so I can get them in the open ground.

They did talk about this on gardeners question time last week but did not mention how large a pot to use or if it is one clove per pot of more?

What do you think would be the best compromise?

I don't know if this is recommended, but it works ok.

I put about 6 cloves in a 10-inch pot. Or one clove in the long narrow pots you get roses in.

Last year my garlic in pots were not as big as those in the ground, but they were still ok. I gave those in pots the occassional handful of chicken manure. I think I will give them a bit more this year.

Hello previous contributors,  I was given a bag of garlic but looked more like tulip bulbs (sans peel)  it seems they are elephant garlic but did not have 'the cold snap' to force them to make cloves.  Personally, I think I prefer a HUGE clove rather than a lot of fiddley small ones. They are in the ground now and I'll be waiting for them to show soon.  Cheers, Tony.

When I have had the problem of not being able to plant, I've used a 7cm square black plastic quite satisfatorily

Thanks everyone.

Managed to get some of them into some pots on Sunday. Been away on business since in Manchester so will get some more planted when I can. Might still put some outside if this dry weather continues at home is Sussex.
