Title: Rabbit with a huge burst abscess, treat or vets??
Post by: cocopops on November 17, 2009, 19:07:53
One of my daughter's bunnies did not come to me when I went to feed them this evening (daughter is unwell).  I noticed that one side of his face was very swollen so I picked him up to take a look.  Whilst prodding around a huge abscess burst and the puss flew everywhere (must have been at least 5-8ml).

I have cleaned it up as best I can, and he immediately started eating.  Do I need to take him to the vets or can I treat it at home?  As the last poorly bunny cost £100  I am obviously wary; but if need be I will obviously take him to the vet.

I have tried searching the internet but there is so much information I am confused.

I'd go to the vet.
They can reoccur if not cleared up with antibiotics.  It will at least give you peace of mind.

You don't need a spade - it's easy to quickly send a rabbit to bunny heaven. Hold body in one hand, pull back head with other, push in middle of neck with thumb until you hear the click... Might as well try healing it first at the vets though, eh?!?!

You should take it to a vet.   I know if dogs get an abscess it will reoccur, and think Barriedale Nick is right.

crikey I forgot about this one.  Toffee is now cured (£50 later) and living away from the two female bunnies.  One seems to have suffered from his bullying and decided she wanted him gone.  The two girls are getting along great and with a mix of guinea pigs it is happy in the 'lapan couchon' houses.
