Hi All,
I am looking at the garden for the new house and now i have agreed a hard landscaping plan for this i now need to work on the plants.
I want to pop lots of fruit trees into a large border at the back of the garden ( i will post an image of the plan once its tidy).
Next thing i need to decide on is Trees which all need to have fruit :)
I have decided on the apples i want which are all Minarette from Ken Muir (having family getting me vouchers for xmas) having
Pixie group C
Kidds Orange Red group B
Gala group c
Bountiful group B
An Asian Pear is also on my shopping list as i am not a fan or english pears.
I have room for 1 or maybe 2 other trees i think (not cherrys yuck) i am thinking that i would have a plum as i love eating these (never really cooked with them) but not sure about damsons and gages as i have never tried them.
Can anyone recommend what might be suitable? I am tempted to pop in a nut like a chestnut and plant in a pot but i think this might be overkill.
Advice welcome...
(Working on climbing plants once i have this agreed and i work out what spaces i have to cover :))

You must have a massive garden. :o
I would go for plums, most people like those.

Victoria or greengage for eating, damson for the best jam in the world!
-
I'm with Olyve on this, but would make jam with the greengages too, it is the most wonderful jam and damson too! Greengage is definitely going to be my next tree I purchase!

Greengage... Coe's golden Drop or just Cambridge Gage...
:)

compared to plum how does the damson or gage taste like?
-
Gages are "finer" and sweeter to my taste. Damsons are good tasting but too much stone to really compare as a dessert... :)

Cambridge Gage (September) is one of my favourites. Opal (July) or Early Transparent Gage (August) are early , and are supposed to have a good flavour but I haven't tried them (One or other is on my list, but I haven't mde up my mind). Or you could go for a late dual-purpose plum like Marjorie's Seedling (late September-October). If you've got room for two, my advice would be to get ones thar ripen at different times. That way you get a longer season.

Count Althans Gage has been good for us, in a frost pocket

Damsons are usually cooked and I think have superior flavour to plums though they are quite sour which I prefer. Small ones can be pitted with an olive pitter!
The first tree i planted is a Damson, it does take some time to produce fruit but this year i had 7 and hoping for more next year.
I personally don't like gages...too sweet.
I did have a delicious plum recently leaning towards Damson in flavour called purple pershore.
