This year I grow chillies for the first time. I planted Cayenne and it has done fantastic. Masses of chillies. Next year i want to grow more than one variety. Any suggestions?
My daughter's came on leaps and bounds after the advice given on A4A

I always grow at least one variety of Cayenne, Jalapeņo & a 'cherry' stuffer, simply because they're middle of the road & most folk like them. It really depends what you want to use the chilies for, how much heat you like & the space you have available for growing.
What do you like to cook? Do you want to be able to snack directly from the plant, or would you rather grow really hot stuff and use a little of each pod sparingly? Have you sampled any of your daughter's chilli's? (If I remember correctly she was growing some of the hotter varieties.) Is there any characteristic you'd hate? (For example, some varieties are quite fruity, so if you dislike citrus or raisins there are certain varieties best avoided).

Gosh Sholls, what a lot to think about. I cook quite a lot of stir fry's and find the chillies give them a bit of a kick. I also make a lot of chutneys so use them then, and in pickling. i under stand you can pickle chillies on their own though never tried it. I like to be more adventurous using them. What is a Cherry Stuffer? (sorry to sound ignorant) What are the fruity ones? I shall have quite a bit of space next year as I'm cutting back on Tomatoes they were quite disappointing this year.

I think I will be growing less varieties this year, I'm settling on 'Ring of Fire' and 'Red Cayenne' as they are the ones that crop well and have the right heat for our family, although OH is a chilli freak and add six times as many to his food!

I should have explained 'cherry' stuffer, sorry. I meant something like Cherry Bomb (http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=cherry+bomb&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&chile=1&submit=Search) or Satan's Kiss (http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=satans+kiss&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&chile=1&submit=Search), I'll be growing the latter for the first time next year, Biscombe posted some pics of them (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,54444.0.html) a while back. They're fleshy pods, ideal for eating raw in salads or stuffed with cream cheese, but they also hold their shape well when lightly cooked.
For the 'hot' end of the spectrum I love Fatalii (http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=FATALII&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&chile=1&submit=Search), Naga's (http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=dorset+naga&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&chile=1&submit=Search) (many Tesco's sell them if you want to investigate, a little goes an extremely long way), and Congo Trinidad (http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=Congo+Trinidad&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&chile=1&submit=Search). I've found Fatalii and Congo Trinidad more productive that the Naga's.
There are lots of milder varieties used for seasoning rather than blow your socks off heat. Pasilla (http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=pasilla&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&chile=1&submit=Search) is productive and easy to grow, but some people object to the raisin undertones.
My new (to me) varieties next year will be Pimenta De Neyde (http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=neyde&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&chile=1&submit=Search) and a Rocoto (http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?find=rocoto&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Pubescens&chile=1&submit=Search), both are stunning plants. I've never tasted the PdN, but Rocotos taste great & are supposedly quite hardy.

I will be growing Santa Fe Grande, Peter Pepper, Purrira, Congo Trinidad,
Fatalli, Peach Habanero, Tobasco, Naga Morich, Serrano and Early Jalapeno.
I'm not very keen on chillies myself but my family and friends like them so I grow for them.
This year I grew some Scotch Bonnet. My son, who is used to chillies, tasted the tiniest bit of one and started sweating and crying ;D
We have a Bangladeshi family at the allotments who love chillies so I gave them some Scotch Bonnets and asked them to let me know what they thought of them........ they said they were quite mild!!
As well as the varieties mentioned above, I am also growing five plants that the Bangladeshi family gave me. They said they were HOT, so if they think they are 'hot' they must be mega-atomic!

Definitely going to grow Satan's Kiss i really fancy them raw and stuffed with cream cheese. I shall also try Fatalii for the hot ones as you have tried and tested them. Rocotos,Sholls are they mild or hot? Are these chillies from specialist or will most good garden centers sell them? Can i plant just one or two from each pack i know you only get about 6 to a pack, but i don't want 6 of one variety. will the seeds keep for next year? I suppose i could try to find someone to swap seeds with.

I will not be growing Early Jalapeno because it isn't early or particularly bountiful or Thai Dragon - very poor germination.

Hi there Biscombe.. I was looking at Johnny's seeds on line yesterday and they had a couple of new ones that I found interesting, can't remember the name without looking again but one grew upwards out of the plant.. take a look, I can help with shipping of that is a problem for you over there,

Sholls 50 tomato varieties only makes you a trainee tomato grower.

forgot to ask does anyone save the seeds from the dried chillies and are they successful when sown?

I had room this year to plant out 303 chilli and sweet pepper plants, next year I'm not going to plant so many of each variety and plan to plant out 400 plants! Much easier this year with woofing help in July and a drip irrigation system in place!
I make and sell sauces so I end up with a large chest freezer full that I can use after the season ends, loads or ristras and powder, and sauces. Apart from that I think they are the best plant to grow with all the shapes colours and heat!
I have 2500 m2 of land with mainly orange trees that are nice but limit the growing space.

I haven't grown chillies before this year as I have not found any decent chilli seeds here in Belgium but was given a couple of Cayenne plants by an Indian friend and they've produced a decent crop. I found some seeds for a purple chilli when in the UK but the pods, whilst very pretty, are tiny so maybe I haven't fed them enough. We're waiting for them to go red before eating any so I can't comment on taste.
Can anyone recommend a good fruity, spicy chilli that will not anaesthetise my taste buds or scare off our Belgian friends?

Found i had a few pennys in my paypal account so spent it on chilli seeds from the Devon chilli company, they have some on offer at 50p ;D o ;Ddered 11 packs :o hubby will kill me if he funds out, off to find a place to hide them ;D

Good luck with the Thai Dragon mike77. I couldn't get them to germinate even in a heated propagator. Maybe a duff batch or a duff gardener tho!

my partner bought me the thai dragon at a plant sale earlier in the year and its currently sat on the living room table looking really healthy and standing about 25-30 inches high with beautiful dark green foliage and its still flowering like mad although not setting fruit just dropping the flowers.
i should add it didn't set many fruits at all only about 5 or 6 even though i've been gently shaking it from time to time and it spent most of the summer outside.
i was tempted to pinch it out to encourage more fruit but decided to leave it to its own devices as it makes such a nice houseplant!
will be keeping a close eye on it over winter and if it looks like its starting to struggle it will get the "haircut" and fingers crossed treatment

Im overwintering some for the first time this year so I am eager to see if they make it.
I have been told to mist my chilli plants to encourage fruit setting but have no idea if it helps or not - anyone tried or heard of this?

I'm only doing one nerxt year, Pimento de Padron I think it's called. For a Tapas dish fry up a load of them in a little oil then sprinkle with coarse salt.... some are sweet but the occasional one tears your head off which adds to the fun.
