Wow thats big! Looks like some kind of hawk moth. I found a bright green one that size when I was digging up some carpet, really should have taken a photo.

I get them too... I think they are our "grasshoppers" as I only get them on the bottom plots where there is rough grass..  :-\

Is it a cinnabar moth pupa? I get lots of these though yours does look on the large side.

i would say its a hawk moth of some kind

Have you any privet (Privet hawk moth) or evening primrose (elephant hawk moth) nearby?

There's a privet hedge down there too... so Hawk Moth it is then... I'll leave them alone..  :)
