its not very often a TV presenter rubs me the wrong way but i couldn't watch the show to the end. who is he and what does he normally do? his name is familiar but i can't really place him ???
the show looked like a nice show though, i pretty much cook like that as well.

Whew! Thought it was just me. Couldn't put my finger on it but I found him irritating.

I watched it again this morning..with no interuptions and I did not find him irritating.

He's a man after me own heart. Don't waste anything. I liked the idea of the chickenburgers and mayonaise wrapped in a lettuce leaf. Trouble is we only grow little gem. Praps I could make mini burgers. Will watch the programme again cos I'm always on the look out for simple meals that can be cooked quickly. Means we can spend longer at the plot

Love his books, love his recipes (for guidance only of course!) but...... definitely irritating.

watched this on I player, after reading this thread. very good program but yes he does grate a little, although I will try and watch the rest of the series as he appears well informed and very enthusiastic.

Thanks for that betula, did miss it but pleased I can catch up now.
When old pence were in short supply, used to raid the fridge and make all
sorts of wierd and wonderful things for the kids tea, ie;
sausage, egg tomato and onion flan - real pastry and topped with cheese and
into the oven. May not be very exotic by todays standards, but they cleared thier plates
and would eat anything I put in front of them ---- so easy for me ! ;D

Oh Flossy some of the best stuff i've cooked has been bits and pieces,trouble is you can seldom replicate it exactly.I remember my late sister ferreting around at the bottom of her freezer at the end of the month-4 kids and a hungry husband to feed ,she found a handful of sausages and some streaky bacon and her fabulous sausage pasty was born.suet pastry sage & onion stuffing and anything else she could find.Very very filling .I so miss her inspiration :'(

I do like the sound of your sisters sausage pasty macmac, will try that for sure, ;)
Again , when funds were low I did a ' cornbeef wellington ', stuffed with pre cooked
veg and seasoning, and think corned beef is so nicer when hot ! ;D

...... well I loved the show ,and found the slower pace quite easy and relaxing to watch . I have downloaded the Simple Suppers recipe brochure .... great stuff !

i've always really liked Nigel Slater, both style and content and thoroughly enjoyed the programme. Having read the comments on here i wonder if he will "grate" next time I watch!!
I also really liked his kitchen!!

A while ago I went retro sixties style and have a yellow kitchen...........a lot of people love it and with my collections of TGGreen cornish ware it does look good but I still hanker after the lovely AGA country style...... ;D

We had them yesterday as well, couldn't get chicken so used turkey and they were lovely.OH has suggested tweaking them...chilli, garlic etc

Never heard of the guy, but just seen that the Christmas pudding recipe I use that I downloaded from the net years ago has his name at the top. Good recipe too, not too sweet. :) :) :) :)

Enjoyed the programme much better tonight - far less irritating for some reason! Very good promotion for growing your own veg too. ;D

Dinner with home grown veggies
chicken pot pie,
chicken breast,
can cream chicken soup
Then home grown veggies
leek,
carrot,
zucchini,
shallot.
pinch of thyme
bought potato in buttermilk pastry..... will serve with steamed runner beans.

One of my criteria for TV cooks is, would I cook that for OH and I. In the case of Nigel Slater, there was a resounding NO echoing through the house.
Reasonably entertaining.
I think the best bit was on the two children on the allotmentholders site. For their ages, they were learning how to grow.
They were obviously 'involved/very interested' in growing on the allotment.

I thought the mackerel and rhubarb, in particular, was fingerlickingly good! There is a simple conceptual elegance about his cooking which, in my view, sits well with both the man and his writing.

Puts me in mind of watching Bonnie and Clyde as a very young teenager then having to go out and buy the reddest lipstick that i could find and a packet of fags....lol

I absolutely love his style of cooking with exception to the use of cream.Everything else was wonderful :)

The sausage pasta with mustard looked good but I would just use wholegrain mustard so that it wasn't too hot. I would also make my own sausage meat.

I'm sure that was a Katie Stewart recipe back in the seventies - lived on mackerel as a student - even the smoked was 12p a lb.
Watched a bit more and think I was overly harsh earlier on. I can hardly complain about Masterchef being all shouting and fast edits and then slate Mr Slater for being the opposite!

He did come across as a little creepy but I'm not sure why exactly. I have a couple of his books which I like but he seems to use a lot of cream in the recipes I have seen in this programme. Quite a bit of his stuff would not be classed as 'dinner' by my picky crowd. I did notice that with the allotment soup all people ate was bread and juice and didnt touch the rather enormous swiss chard leaves which were floating in it.
