Title: My Last Show
Post by: davyw1 on September 08, 2009, 09:27:11
Well for this year.

The compitition was was good and the banter even better, when the judge comments that some of the stands could compete anywhere then you know you have put on a good show.
Today is froth and broth with dumplings of course.

I managed to win

Best Truss              1st and 2nd
4 Tomatoes yellow 1st
4 Tomatoes Red     1st
Cucumbers             1st, 2nd and 3rd
Celary                    1st
Cauliflower             2nd

Well done Dave.

The Cucumbers were a close thing, I think length did it in the end!

Lovely Cauli the 1st must have been really good!!

Were those tomatoes 'Shirley' by any chance?

What variety of celery were they.

I have given Celery a go this year for the first but I am not too enchanted with my results so far.

Perhaps variety might be partially the problem!

Enough of my problems! .... once again ........Well done!!

TEE GEE the celery was Ideal from Select Seeds.
The cucumbers Carman again from select seeds but i think what caught the judges eye was they were given a nice shine with olive oil.
The yellow tomatoes were my own seed don't know the name.
the reds were either Vandros or Cedrico, the best truss.....yep ......good old reliable Shirley.
The cauli was Cornel and i told the winner A mate, Terry what to try this year, the blighter, never mind i will get him next year.

There is a little trick to growing cellery apart from manure, water and slug pellets, when you plant the cellery out and it gets established put a 12"pot over it, this is not to draw the plant but to support the outer stalks to stop them from flopping then about 8 weeks before you want the plant you then collar it. I use an 2 collars inner and outer so i pull up the inner as it grows and keeping two thirds of the plant covered.
