Title: Has anyone tried broccoli raab/turnip brocoli
Post by: Lizann on July 30, 2009, 12:56:34
Has anyone had a try or had any success with this?

I received a free packet of brocolli raab with a magazine but had no success.  Two sowings all bolted before they were 6 inches high.  Planning to try again - ever hopeful!

Yes, I have - it grows really fast and you have to be ready for it as the plant is in a rush! One blink and its gone to seed!

Great for a quick crop and soft, tasty stems. I use it a lot in the cooler months, when ti seems to do best.

Is it just like sprouting broccoli then?

The taste is similar, but as has been said it has a much softer texture. I personally eat the 'heads' raw and use the leaves in salads.

Like GodfreyRob I tend to grow it in the cooler months, my Febuary to mid May sowings were great; Autumn sowings work well too. I sowed a few seeds in June with the intention of allowing the plants to go to seed & they obliged within a fortnight.

Sowed some the other day and they have germinated already, so fingers crossed it's not too warm now.

Hmm, mine form nice fat seed pods after flowering... no danger of those seeds blowing around.  8)

I read soemwhere that it takes 40 days form germination until ready to eat!
I grew some a few years ago just to try, but they went over far too quickly before I managed to harvest any.
I have planted a whole row of the stuff this year. Planted around 2weeks ago, and already about 4-5 inches tall!

I have two cultivars, one is ready in 40 days and one in 50. If they bolt I just eat the flowers, like with oriental greens.

They're mad for Rapini in Padania.
