Title: Plant ID number 2 (im pretty sure it's a fuschia)
Post by: JimmyJames on July 20, 2009, 12:25:37
As the title says, im pretty sure this one is a fuschia.
Assuming it is,  I have read that I should prune early spring, and that I can give it a very harsh cut back and it will be ok.

I read that I can take it almost to the ground, but wont want to take that much off it....

Its lovely, but way too big.  Just coming into flower too.

Can we confirm its a fuschia?  Any idea what type?

Thanks Saddad.

I have taken a load of cuttings as I hear they take really well.

I may well offer them up on here if anyone is interested (once I know they aren't going to die on me!)

Assuming its hardy it looks like  Fuchsia "Mrs W.P. Wood" - flowers are single with small pale pink sepals, white corolla. However if the sepals have green tips, it could be "Whiteknights Pearl"

Both have same flower size as the common Riccartonii, but smaller than Genii/ Mrs Popple/Alice Hoffman.
Both are  a bush type and "Mrs W.P. Wood" grows to 3ft,  "Whiteknights Pearl to 2ft.

Pruning is done after the first frosts when all the flowers and soft growth are killed off.

What type of pruning depends on if the new shoots come from the ground, in which case prune down to 6"-12", leaving this will protect the crown, remind you where it is and can be removed in the Spring. If the new Spring growth is from the old woody stems, trim back to the woody framework.

Hi

How high is your bush?  Could it be getting on for 6'?  If so it could be this one...

http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/shrubs/fuchsia-magellanica-var.-molinae/itemno.PL00002709/

The magellanicas can be cut right back in february time and will regrow to a good size.  I have never seen a pale pink one before but wish I had one.  I used to have a red/purple one and it always gave a really good show as yours has.

Thanks for all the replies and tips!

Regarding the height,  I would say it is nearer 8 feet tall!  There is a fence panel (I assume that is 6 foot) and the fence is on the decking.  The plant starts at ground level and is taller than the fence!!

Im really looking forward to when it blooms fully.  There are hundred of little flowers waiting to open :D

@ Tulipa,   If any of my cuttings take root, I will post of here and see if anyone wants me to post them!

We have the same one outside in the front garden. It is Mrs W.P Wood. I got mine by pinching a tiny little cutting from a garden we visited. (I did those things when I was younger) You can really cut it well back and it will come back. To be honest I don't think you could get rid if you wanted to.Will go and take a pic now.
