Title: How are your chillies doing this year?
Post by: Sparkly on July 10, 2009, 13:03:42
Mine seemed to be slow earlier in the season (didn't plant till April). They have really picked up now and have flowers and the first chilli set. These are in a greenhouse.

I've plant two types this year, Serrano and cayenne. Both are producing fruits, although still green. I'm a bit worried though, the flesh doesn't seem to be producing the hot wax's? It my first year growing them and i expected to find the skins producing this wax so i could determine how hot they're going to be. Probably it only produces this after picking?

I've had an interesting split between sweet peppers and chillies....the sweet peppers (Sweet Banana, Ramiro and some saved seeds) are going great guns, some almost ready for picking. The chillies are all flowering well, but just starting to grow fruits......they have all been repotted and fed the same!  :-\

Mine are going great guns... got lots of little chillies appearing. The variety is something like Sizzler or Hot Sizzle... can't remember properly - I was given them.

Hi Sparkly

As promised, here is a photo of the Chilli Purple plant  I grew from the seed you sent me and sowed on 16 April.  It's over 30cm tall now and has the first flower buds forming.  I'm delighted with it.   :)

I lost a lot of seedlings in April when the tray they were in was knocked onto the greenhouse floor. Managed to salvage half a dozen and they're looking good, plenty of flowers and a couple of chillies set. Problem is I don't know what varieties we have left.  :-\

How do I know when my chilis are 'ripe' to use? Tomatoes are easy, they change colour and go a little softer but sweet pepper and chili I'm never sure. Is there a optimum number of days from flower setting to mature fruit?  ???

Mine very slow indeed, but nice little plants.  Growing Heatwave.  Put them outside to harden off too soon.  Put a whole one in a stew a couple of years ago and nearly blew my head off.

Mine vary, some are slow and only have a few pods on. Others are ver prolific, im picking (or could do but sometimes leave them) around 1kg a week...I took a few pics today but only of plants I have at my house, most are at my mums.

Growing 7 pots of T&M 'tropical heat' outside and so far, quite a few flowers and 1 or 2 fruit have set.    Hopefully the sun will be back before long as that will help things along nicely.

some of mine are doing well, appache, f1, bolivian rainbow, others i'm struggling with ,i've got some dorset nagas which have only just started to flower.
the one i'm having the most trouble with is cherry chilli i'm getting plenty of fruit but most seem to be rotting around the stalk and dropping off any ideas as to what i might be doing wrong, some kind of watering issue maybe?

Mine are outside in the ground without cover, they are doing well and a few nibbles of green ones has confirmed plenty of heat. They all very bushy this year and loaded with fruit despite the cold damp weather. They look to be the healthiest I've ever grown, no leaf curl, no wilt, no necrosis, no BER, no bloom drop, no aphids, no viruses, just big healthy bushy green plants. Only plant that is not doing well is a C. Chinense but no surprises there, it's healthy and leafy, but has only set two fruits so far.

My outdoor green chilli and cayene are all ripening up nicely and the Thai ones have just started to fruit  :) . Think I'll bring the Thai chillies in for winter and see how they do next year
