Title: bee advice
Post by: sarah on May 23, 2009, 11:18:18
my OH has just uncovered a bees nest in the middle of the compost bin.  i have googled a bit and the advice seems to be that we should be able to move the nest after dark on to slate or suchlike covered in soft material and covered by a flower pot.

does this sound feasible to you knowledgable bee people?  i havent poked about to see if there is a nest or if theyare new bees. theres plenty of them (big bees) and they are pretty miffed so we are steering clear for the time being, but could use some advice.  :)

What kind of bees? Just out of interest, really!

I am not sure on bee identification  :P.  They are like a child would draw a bee, very chubby black yellow stripes and not as big as i originally thought.   ???

It sounds like a typical bumblebee nest. They certainly can be moved, as long as it's done after dark when you can move the bees along with the nest. Be warned, they'll crawl over you and sting like mad!

Try phoning Ruth Homer, 01308 482 483, for someone local. She's in Dorchester but she's the only contact listed for Dorset.
