Title: Can you buy a new handle for a little spade?
Post by: genlistlass on April 24, 2009, 16:48:10
"Someone" has broken the handle of my "lady's spade". It's a little light one inherited from my ma in law who was a little lady like moi.... The handle WAS wooden, I want it repaired. Just been looknig at new spades but they all have HEAVY metal handles....... nasty.

Look for an old type of iron mongers!  I have always found a handle in one of those  ;D

I always use wooden handled spades and forks, the best place is a Ironmongers. I have a 5 prong fork and the handle broke got a new handle in my local Ironmonger in Pontlottyn - he even fitted it for me

daileg - thats a wonderful site for specialist tools - I've bookmarked it for Xmas pressie perusal!

Ironmongers - now that a blast from the past word!  But it conjures
up the name Smailes of Morpeth, a veritable gloryhole of tools and thingeys of all kinds. Think they are JUST back into their premises after last Septembers floods. Will try them, if THEY don't have it I'll be surprised. They seem to have everything else! Will phone first cos its a 20 mile round trip.

Hi

You could make a handle buy a piece of ash or hickory, and spoke shave it to the required shape, then add the handle?

That would be what I would do, then you would really get pleasure out of it!  I have a few spades somewhere to do, it is surprising how many folk have loveley tools and then when the handle breaks, go and buy a plastic one!  Saying that my fork is a plastic one just now, as I don't have an old one!  I am tempted to make the metal part too!  hehe

Cheers

Dave

Buzzy Bee - you volunteering? I think it's a lovely idea but it's beyond my capabilities. Will go the ironmonger route I think. Maybe they will fix it on for me, if not I will get out the tool box  :o ???
