Hi any tips on planting sweetcorn will they survive outdoors if planted this weekend grown undercover they are 3 to 4 inches high

You're about a month early to plant out sweetcorn and about a week eraarly for those plants.... sow somewhere between now and the start of May, plant out at the end of May.... if you put them in now and we get a frost you will lose the lot...... If you've got more seed then sure, plant them now and pray, but start another load just in case.... if you don 't need them swap them at he end of May for something else.....

The only problem with keeping sweetcorn for ages in the pots is they have a habbit of becoming pot bound and the roots go around and around at the bottom of the pot and when they go in the ground they never take properly
as chris cross stated because your up north i wouldnt plant outside yet // if it were me id pul;l them all out save the compost and re sow save yourself the trouble and the worry if they did or if they didnt

Put them out, under fleece or old windows... they'll live or die... :-X

I'll be planting mine in the next few days, in trays on the windowsill. Once it's up and growing well, I transplant it into pots and put it in a cold frame. It then goes out around the end of next month, under cloches if there's any risk of frost. The vital thing is never to let it get potbound, or you won't get a crop.

Oh dear, I have also 'jumped the gun'. Mine are growing in pots in my plastic greenhouse. Will have to put them in middle May before I go on holiday. I am not renowned for my patience.

Look for Poundland cloches; they're a lifesaver for that sort of situation!

Funny you should say that because I am just waiting for the bank to open and then off to Enfield where there is a small Poundland so will have a look. Thanks. The seeds I bought from the Wood Green branch are doing well and just as good as the expensive ones (at least so far).

Oops! Looks like I've put mine in too early. Mine all went out last weekend, as yet they are all doing fine, but it sounds like I had better do some more just in case.

I have 2 varieties. One is about 3" high now in an unheated greenhouse. The other is 1-2" high on my window sill. This will also be in the greenhouse next week. Neither will be getting planted out for at least another 3 weeks.

Hi glad to see that I am not the only impatient one have loads of plants growing some ahead of real planting out time Just going to take risk with frost we all learn by our mistakes

I sowed a first batch last Tuesday. Great fun watching them come up - 11 out of 15 so far. Then they seem to put on a centimetre a day! Aiming to plant out the week after next as they can't stay in 3 inch pots much after that. Then I will keep my fingers crossed for no late frosts, and also start a second batch straight away as that way we have corn for longer! I stick to one variety to make it simple (Swift F1). Yummmm ;D ;D ;D

Well we are near blackpool and mine have been out under the cloche for a couple fo weeks and putting on weight fine despite the chilly nights, so dont let them go yellow just cover them and remember to water them.
last frost here last year was 14th April.

The latest frost I'm aware of here was on June 16th, so I'm always rather wary.

the kids are planting ours this weekend, all being well, theyve told me to plant lots and lots and lots and hundreds!!! ;D think weve got some lotty sweetcorn addicts.... shame ive only got 1pk! may have to go find another variety and plant them the other end of the plot.....

i planted 30 yesterday indoors using toilet rolls. when should they go out? when the roots show at the bottom or when there at a specific height? ???

Once all risk of frost has passed but don't let them become pot-bound, move into bigger pots if you have to...... once they germinate start hardening off, the only realy pest they'll have in this country is slugs and snails when they're still small, once they're a foot or so tall there really isn't anythign that we get that will be that interested in them as they will be too tough.... birds, rabbits, squirrels and deer will probably be interested in them once the kernels are forming though.....

Mine have gone in today in rootrainers, plannning to put them out in about 3 weeks time... ;D
Son excited as we are growing some pink popcorn I got from a Canadian seed supplier on his plot. ;D
