Title: Leg of Lamb - strange smell
Post by: lushy86 on April 12, 2009, 22:39:51
I got a lovely (so I thought) half price leg of New Zealand lamb from Tesco.  Usually try to buy welsh but was such a good price.  Invited ma, my best mate and her bab to join the three of us for big roastie.

When I took it out of the wrapper I thought it had a faintly funny smell so rinsed it then did the usual garlic and rosemary it looked fine.  As it was cooking got mum to have a sniff she said it was ok but I still thought is smelled strange.  As I was carving I tasted it and started to worry it had a funny taste, again mum said it was ok so served it.  We soon realised that there was a horrible taint to it - almost chemical so we all left it.  I had a good pick over and notice that the meat nearer the bone seemed ok whereas nearer the outside was definately tainted.  Will take it back tomorrow but it totally spoiled dinner and made me feel nervous that we all might get repercussions!  We think it must have either been transported with some kind of cleaning fluid or something.  Wierd tho  ??? ???

Hope you all had a lovely choccy day

Oh what a shame.  I saw that Tesco were selling half price legs of lamb and would have got one but they were shut today, pleased now that I didn't.  Hope you had plenty of vegetables but it must have spoilt your dinner.

That's dreadful! When did you buy it and how did you store it before cooking it today? Please, when you take it back, ask for proper compensation; after all the Easter Day meal is one of the just two traditional family gathering meals we have on our calendar :o All the best,

Lishka

Same thing happened to me on Saturday - very weird -  the smell was like manure on ours  put me right off - also new Zealand lamb but from Waitrose.  The thick end was ok but the thinner end went to the cats.

Me too, but from Sainsbury's! We didn't even cook ours as it smelled horrible. On the label it actually says that there might be a slight smell when you first open the wrapper but that this should dissipate after a short while. We left it for a couple of hours and it was certainly no better.

Managed to get a full refund plus a bit more just by telephoning the helpline.

I bought a couple of the legs from Sainsburys, froze one & had one last weekend. The thin end tasted a bit over-aged, but the main bit was fine... we ate it all!

I had a leg of lamb last month that tasted funny.  Bought from Sainsburys 3 weeks before.   I have ofton kept meat in the freezer for longer but not now.    I did wonder what it was.  Seems there  might have been a certain batch  from from N.Z do you think.

Oh dear. :( We have NZ lamb from Tesco's for tonight. Have just been into the kitchen and retrieved it from the oven where it was set to automatically come on later this afternoon. ( intended being over the lotty but the rain has come down). Took it out of the tin and took a good sniff. No apparent nasty smell so I think I'll take a chance. A bit worrying that lamb from different stores are not smelling as they should. What does anyone think it might be? :-\

Definately take it back, doesn't matter if you cooked it. Do you have the receipt or the wrapper for batch code? I would also make a note of the batch number and write to head office claiming a spoilt celebration. Tesco are the worst supermarket ever. Ocado are price checked against Waitrose and have superb customer service!!

Spot-on! You're right in all of it (batch code - presume your rubbish collection hasn't happened today, lushy? ::) if you can find it, but most certainly hammer the spoilt celebration bit. Even if you've already contacted the local shop, it's worth that letter. Really disturbed to read reports that so many of you have experienced the same :o

Clearly using the word "lamb" in its very loosest sense  ;D

We had 2 legs of lamb today, one from Waitrose, one from Tesco (it was a family dinner with the in-laws, I hasten to add).  Both were absolutely fine, but the Waitrose one was slightly more tender.

This evening we had one of the "special offer" legs of lamb bought from Sainsbury yesterday.  There was no bad smell to it though the wrapper warned that there could be one when the vaccumed pack was opened.  Ours was really delicious and very tender.  I am sorry to hear that some of you have not been so fortunate.

Just to say that our leg of lamb from Tescos was very tender and tasted beautiful. The tainted one should be returned as others have said and the supermarket should fully refund the money plus extra for the spoilt family lunch

I had to reply to this, just to let you know you're not going mad.
I hate new Zealand lamb. always have , for the last 25 years of my adult live i have insisted on welsh/british lamb, the reason for this...... new zealand lamb tastes weird, and it always has done. it has a mutton taste to it and the fact it's been shrink wrapped in plastic and placed in a hold of a refrigerated container ship and shipped half way across the world does'nt help the taste.
moral of the story...... buy British :)

hear hear Edukes!  Come on lottie people we should be buying British. No point us saving foodmiles growing our own veg and then buying something easily available here from the other side of the world!!   :)

and most of the NZ lamb is imported by Bernard Mathews!! eugh!!

I remember a study from last year that found NZ lamb produced less CO2 than homegrown stuff, even after the journey half way around the world... and anyway what's wrong with supporting Kiwi farmers? They produce lamb when ours isn't really in season, at a better price, to a generally high standard (apart from this lot!)... I didn't realise that St Bernard was involved though... that does give cause for concern. Mechanically reclaimed textured lamb protein anyone? Yummy!

I quite agree, but it isn't always as easy as that. The supermarkets around here only seem to sell useless tiny scrappy bits of British lamb and unfortunately the independent butchers are few and far between... :-[ We make a point of stocking up on all kinds of meat whenever we come across a decent butcher on our travels!

I think this is a sign of the times unfortunately. Maybe Jamie Oliver can campaign for British Lamb now - we seem to now get a better range of free-range chicken and british pork at a reasonable cost in the shops now so maybe the public are winning!?

Well, I stupidly have not taken it back yet, was going to this morning then thought cba - at least we are all ok, but you are all right, wonder if its too late now??

Don't have the wrapper tho, strangely spent last night going through the rubbish with my marigolds on looking for my 15 year old's retainer (teeth braces) - Yuk!  She later found it in the lounge - of course  >:( so can't face that again!

I hate tesco abd try to avoid it when possible and  I should follow my instincts and buy British, I knew I should have.

Maybe I'll do it tomorrow and just say I have been too busy growing decent food on my allotment!!

Worrying that others have had the same problem  ???

Lushy, someone up-thread said that they didn't go, but merely telephoned? So..if you can't do one, please do the other, and no! it's not too late. So many people round my way are still on hol as, of course, are the schools and yesterday itself was a Bank Holiday, so......well, so that's your tomorrow sorted for you then 8)

Just a thought, not convinced that the lamb was actually off or would cause anyone food poisoning, or else we would hear more about it, as the offer at Tesco was quite well advertised and many, many people must have bought it and eaten it.  Maybe it is something to do with the plastic it is sealed in.  I cut the plastic off and run the lamb under the cold tap, that seems to get rid of the smell, then I cook it and it seems OK.  This was not the Tesco offer but any lamb that has been frozen and wrapped in plastic.  I am sure that if the lamb that has been sold in many supermarkets caused any health problems we will soon hear about it.  It is s.d's law that whenever one has visitors things seem to go wrong, that is why nowadays I only cook for OH.  That is not to say that if you were dissatisfied and it spoilt your dinner not to tell the shop.  They are normally quite good at dealing with complaints.

Thanks Hyacinth - yes I will go tomorrow and phne, I'll let you know what they say.

Borlotti - I thought that which is why i rinsed it and it could well be that tho it was bought as fesh and not frozen.  We wondered if it was tainted by something it travelled with - the smell seemed chemical though s omeone up thread described a manure smell - which could describe it tho not the nice well rotted stuff!

It is a shame but we did have lots of lovely veg and gravy to go with it followed by home made choc fudge pudding and cream so all was not lost  :) 8)

Ah ACE, but we're not all as minted as you... This stuff is £4.50 a kilo, and I've not got a job at the moment! About £7 and we got the meat to do 3 meals for 2 adults & a child (roast, curry, pie)... We'll give your chops a go when I'm working again - it does look slightly better!

Funny you should say that Ace, we have half a lamb on order from someone OH works with, apparently it is growing well, though how it gets around on two legs I don't know!! ;D

They run in the field right next to our nursery. They are all numbered, when we see the shepherd we always joke about looking after no. 32 as it is on special order.

The price seems very wrong. I only pay £1.80 per kg if buying a whole lamb or £2 per kg for a half lamb from the local butchers it's locally produced & they could tell me which field it came from if I wanted to know.

With regard to New Zealand lamb, it's supposed to look unappetising & smell strange when you open the vac pac. You are supposed to leave it for a while so it can bloom & the odour can dissipate.

£1.80 per kilo? In London you're looking at over £12 per kilo for leg of lamb.

Glad I don't live in London then.
There are very low transport costs round here it goes from the farm to the abbatoir to the butchers all are fairly close to each other. It is then cut up as requested, bagged up (not too much packaging) & only costs £1.80 per kg if you are buying a whole lamb. That price does include the weight of the bones which are bagged up to use for stock & any excess fat which is trimmed at the butchers.
