Post by: thifasmom on April 12, 2009, 14:46:07
i remember reading somewhere on here when i first joined that someones husband had worked out a clever way to dismantle pallets without destroying too many of the planks, please can someone tell how they do it or point me in the direction of the old post.

There is this thread.....http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,35697.0.html

...but I think someone mentioned using a hacksaw to cut through the nails as being the quickest method!

Hi Thifasmom,

For the more stubborn pallets (the ones you cannot break apart cleanly) I always punch the nails through the board rather than trying to pull the nails out (ring nails only like to travel in one direction). I use a good centre punch of about 7mm diameter (with a flat end), a small lump hammer and being right handed a leather gardening glove on my left hand   ;)

I've stripped loads of stubborn pallets and in my opinion this is consistently the cleanest way of preserving the boards.

Regards,

'H'

My OH has made a 50' fence for our plot out of pallets. It looks wonderful. Just need to make the composters now.

The pallet stripper tool on the other thread looked really great, but i could only find them for sale in the US.

So make your own I thought and had a brain wave - I've just tried it and it works brilliantly:

just gaffa tape a chisel or similar across the back of a garden fork and the two middle prongs becomes your very own pallet stripper - easy!

I'll try and work out how to post a pic in a bit :)
