Our new composting toilets are now in place and open for business - one at either end of the site. The doings go into a large black plastic tank which is partly above ground so that it can trap heat and allow the waste to dry out. The chimney releases fumes and there is no smell (yet!). We should get usable compost from the tank within a year or 18 months. Here are some photos.

Is this a council run site and did you manage to get some help with funding???

looks much better than our blue chemical toilet, if you dont mine me asking what does a loo like that cost :)

It only took 100 years to get them! The Council owns the site but the allotment society runs it. The rents were set too high a couple of years ago, because the society expected the council to increase its charges more than it did, so we ended up with a surplus and decided that this was a good use for it. Not absolutely sure what the total cost of the two loos was, but I think it was around £6000. A contractor installed the black plastic tanks and bases, while some of us spent a couple of afternoons erecting the structures and chimneys.

we have 1 chemical toilet oin the 26 acre site in hull
but everyones got a bucket to pee in , then pour it onto the compost- manure heap , even pee in wateriung can and fill with 2 gallons of water and water ionto tomatoe plants once a fortnight , tangy tomatoes lol

We've got a loo on our site. It's called "the hedge" ;D
Actually, we've just formed an allotment association for the first time and getting loos on the site was one of the first things they want to do. There are some toilets about 5 minutes walk away but they're only open weekdays from 8am to 5pm. No good for us weekenders !

Our site has a similar loo to Fat Andy's site (behind the cherry tree!) - unfortunately we only have 70 odd plots and no money so we are unlikely to get a nice composting loo. Can it reallly be useable in a year - I thought it could take several years to be safe..

far too posh for me...
we have a square woodern box with a buket innit ad sawdust to stop the smell..also a special compost pile... ;)

What a cool loo! Who has the lovely job of maintenance tho - and do they get first dibs of the `goods'?
We have an external loo plumbed into our clubhouse that can be accessed out of hours using our site key. Was dreading using it but boy am I glad of it in desperate times.
