Title: Seed catalogues Online ?
Post by: linsdownoptimist on December 11, 2003, 01:17:00
I am dying to get my hands on some seed catalogues. My aunt has just given me the address of some places, but i am impatient and need to write off to them tomorrow. But meanwhile I would like to maybe look at some online if there are any such sites.

Edwin Tucker is well worth a luck. If you are wanting some flowers or trees even, then Chiltern Seeds is the one. (not sure whether you can browse through Chilterns but you can order online and they send the catalogue really quick.
My sweetheart refers to them as garden porn. I send off for lots of catalogues as they are just sooooo much nicer to look through in the morning than bills.
cheers

All best - Gavin

Now there's a BIG question, Tim, delicately hidden in just a few words!

I try to garden organically - so as a huge question, I know what I choose, without question.

Does that include choice of seeds?  IMHO,  there's not a lot to choose between organic and non-organic seed - I'm guessing that there is so little residue etc attached to the seed that any effect on the harvest from the grown plant is simply not measurable.

So when I choose organic seed over non-organic, it's probably more of a  personal statement - I don't like throwing poisons around indicriminately/unnecessarily (on my plot or anywhere else).  And I appreciate and value the work of the HDRA - so I choose my main seed source.

The only exception would be packets of seeds which advise the gardener to "Wash your hands after handling."  Now, that's a set of seeds I did NOT buy - so I only have a vague memory of it being peas or carrots.

My choices involve a bit of juggling  (OK, any excuse to get my favourite variety and taste!).  But my priorities probably run like this - first, organic seed;   second, untreated seed (ie not grown organically, but the seed has not been treated with any fungicides etc after harvesting);  third,  treated seeds.

And then there's the F1 bit to think about - I generally avoid F1 seeds, simply because they are bred to provide a similar sized harvest, ready all at the same time;  understandable for a market gardener or farmer, but on an allotment, that's a glut!

Muddied the waters no end now - all best wishes, Gavin
