Looking forward to this discussion!  ;D

I was disappointed. I liked the shed but thought they spent far too much of the programme on it and on the greenhouse, both of which are unrealistic projects for most people. I was looking forward to seeing in some detail how they turned that field into a garden and all the flicking back and forth was a bit irritating and really told me nothing. Amd that "hot andnot" bit at the end.... ::)

Just hope we get more gardening in future!

they've nicked the cool wall from top gear, i didn't like that bit either. I liked the look of the shed but 40 quid for a beat up window?????? ???

I liked it :)
Was refreshing to see them starting fron scratch and to be honest i think carrying on at Berrysfield would have been a big mistake.
Loved the bit on Malcom and Lynns garden as we live near them and have visited it many times over the years, nice to see genuine people not trying to 'push' their plants or selling stuff !
Hope they show more gardening in real time and we have to remember its not all veggies  ;D

Was really looking forward to it like caroline i was looking forward to seeing them transform that big open space but after only about 5 minutes in to the programme you see JCB's earth moving equipment and the likes ripping the field up, and posh buildings ( paid for by us licence payers no Doubt ) going up, and why oh why does it take 4 presenters. I hope the programme does improve on last night because it as great potential to be good.

I was very surprised no body commented on this last night.

I liked the new programme, some bits annoyed me other bits were good but on the whole I think it is going to be good. I agree that the beaten up windows were stupidly priced at £40 each!!!!!!  :o :o :o :o That bloke at the reclamation yard really saw 'Gardener's World' coming!  ::)

Title: Re: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE NEW GARDENERS' WORLD?
Post by: betula on April 04, 2009, 19:56:28
A lot of this reclaimed stuff is expensive.I would probably spend a fortune in a place like that as I love all that stuff.

I had better stick to the local skips ;D

I suppose the programme has a budget and I think the buildings looked good.

I should imagine anybody starting from scratch would use a  JCB on an area of land that size.It is unrealistic really to think otherwise.

I think this first programme was used to tell the story of the move.

I like the new set up.

There was a lot less of the 'arty' shots, mind you there's not much to be arty with !

I'm liking the new start, I think they had gone as far as they could go with Berryfields. (yet more replanting in the Long boarders, reseeding/planting the wildlife area - again, etc). The only way they could have done something new was to rip out something else first.

I think having a range of presenters is good. I for one couldn't bare an hour of Carol (or an hour of Joe) :(.

Yes, the building work was excessive and not representational of the general viewer.

I do hope they don't  keep doing those big projects that none of us have the room for, let alone the cash (ie long boarders, wildlife lake, jungle)

BUT what I really missed last night was ... Alys' dog. Where was it ?

I enjoyed it, friendly, funny and interesting.  I've just sat with 7-year-old son and husband to watch the first half hour again on the iplayer.  I've watched GW for a number of years but it's only over the past 6-7 years that it's resonated properly with me in terms of wanting to garden, and it inspires husband too.  For us it's a perfect wind-down moment at the end of the week, and it fits very nicely with a glass of wine.

It was OK as far as it went.   It would have been a good idea to have left an allotment size plot of land and shown people how to garden from scratch.  Explain not to put perennial weeds into compost bins etc, etc.  There's a lot of beginners out there this year, at least they've got great sites like this one to help.  I didn't have any one to help or advise me when I started and have made an awful lot of mistakes over the years. Several years on I'm still digging out of the clay, the couch that I chopped into a million pieces with the renovator in my first season  ::) ::) As for the windows more money than sense.  They should have a money saving section.
Hope Alys little dog gets included.  Only time will tell.  What ever they do they wont please everybody. :D :D

Can never make out why Alice wears those glasses. She would quite pretty if she just took them off! They are scary. £200 each for those raised beds - crazy. They must have picked the most unbusy time to go to birmingham. It looked like they were straight outside the NEC. Whenever I have been around there it has been rammed. I thought the guy with the roses was a presenter wannabe. You could see him trying to audition in the act!

Watched it last night and I quite enjoyed it.
Title: Re: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE NEW GARDENERS' WORLD?
Post by: hopalong on April 11, 2009, 11:22:12
Quite enjoyed it but was amazed at how much they thought people would be willing to spend, especially in these hard times, on topsoil, raised beds etc. Found the contrived tensions and disagreements between Toby and Alys really irritating. They are trying - very trying.
Title: Re: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE NEW GARDENERS' WORLD?
Post by: caroline7758 on April 11, 2009, 11:33:27
I thought exactly the same- I think they did more to put people off growing their own veg! No mention that you don't actually need raised beds, or that you can grow lettuce in things other than grow-bags. And as I've said elsewhere, why give away carrot and butternut seeds which can be really difficult to grow?Shame Joe's plot didn't get more time, but that's just my bias.

I only saw part of the first weeks show, but caught all of last nights. Agree with much of what has already been posted really, I was pretty shocked by the £55 'quick plant up' of the large pots, 'just pop out tomorrow and buy, buy, buy!' I bet that price didn't include the pots either!

The raised beds.....for a start they look like they are in the shadiest part of the garden, and I also baulked at the price! Overall I thought the programme was a strange mix of things, I quite like Alys as a presenter but she hardly looks at the camera which makes her appear coy.

Accosting people with a converted ice cream van in a city centre and getting them to try growing veg.......hmmmmm! I wonder how many people will actually grow all those packets of seeds he gave out.........at least they are trying to interest more people in it I suppose!

I quite liked the roses bloke, I thought he came over as very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and did seem to be a bit of a natural presenter!
Title: Re: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE NEW GARDENERS' WORLD?
Post by: Baaaaaaaa on April 11, 2009, 14:20:50
I thought that trying to get people to take seed packets, in the centre of Birmingham was silly. Judging by the number of people there it must have been about 6am Sunday morning.

Pushung seeds on people like fliers means they only end up in the local distbins !

I can't say I like Alys' glasses either, far too Dame Edna for me, but I shouldn't comment on other peoples idea of fashion as I had my fashion genes removed at birth.

The £55 quick plant up was for everything - pot, compost and plants. Whilst to me thats a lot of money; to many employed types, short of time, it does show what can be done easily and quickly. After all the Beeb has a duty to appeal to all types.
To balance this they should have money saving ideas for those with time, but short of cash.

It looks like GW has returned to the Titchmarsh days of money no object, last week the windows and doors, this the raised beds.

Not sure what that gardening club thing that Alys presented was all about. Just looked like a few Hippies sitting in a pub talking around a table - "Love and Peace, Love and Peace" and all that.

All in all, I thought it was an attempt to go back to basics. It sent me to sleep several times, but it wasn't so long ago that I didn't have a clue. It must also be frustrating for novices to have to sit though the detailed stuff that we enjoy.

Lets see what next week brings - I'm betting on a huge, unrealistic project, like a pond/lake, or 20ft deep, mile long boarders, with JCBs and engineering bods to do the construction.

Well I enjoyed it, even switched over from Eastenders.  That programme has got really bad, think the person who writes it is on drugs.  Not suitable for children, trying to kill people etc.  Has anyone noticed that gardening has become the 'in thing' and TV seems to be putting more programmes on.  Allotment people are now very fashionable.

Can not believe we are into week two they start of showing you a great big open space that they will work on and all we have seen so far is about 4 raised beds tucked into a corner of the site for growing veg, and at £200 each of our licence payers money for them very expensive veg  :o :o :o. I suppose the rest of the site will be put out to the usual pond, wildlife haven etc. Come on BBC get some real gardening done.

I liked some of the programme, the gent with the roses was fab , but then again I also grow old fashioned roses for cut flowers. ::)

I also thought the gardening in schools and Joe's lottie site being full was excellent news.

The rest of the programme as already stated was full of instant gardening which cost the earth.Any newbie inspired by this programme would soon come down to earth with a bump ;D /shades x

Tonights programme was a load of c**p.
What a wasted opportunity to provide a gardening programme full of helpful advice and of interest to gardeners of all ages and abilities. The gardening advice could have been put in a programme lasting about five minutes.
Luckily I recorded it and was able to fast forward on the worst bits such as Alys, the obnoxious child, the gnomes and the hot/not hot sofa saga.
Why on earth is it necessary to make a competition about Carole and her 'masterclass'. The design section overseen by Joe would take up considerably longer in real life than the few minutes he was allowed.
The BBC has completely lost the plot on GW with the current offering but is it too late for them to realise and accept that drastic change is necessary as a matter of urgency.

What happened to Joe's allotment????? Another 9 day wonder???
I watch GW on iplayer now as I can pick and choose what parts to look at. Last night it took me 2 minutes - in other words a load of tosh. I have found a better gardening programme on Thursdays at 8.30 pm. Its on S4C and called "Byw yn yr Ardd" yes it is in welsh but I although I am welsh I am not a welsh speaker There are English subtitles The programme has a good mixture of gardening with flowers vegetables and also chickens and the presenters are real down to earth people The last programme I watched showed planting spuds, soil preparation for veggies  and preparing  for beans and peas, and  a family just starting to keep chickens, making a pond to encourage toads into the garden (slug control)

Rubbish.

I have to put up with all the soaps my dearly beloved wants to watch and the one programme i have enjoyed is gardeners world, not any more. Whilst i dont consider myself an expert i would never water in seeds like Alys did last night. Also the whole "whats hot and whats not" idea is ridiculous.
Scrap the current series and show repeats from Barnsdale with a man who could garden and who inspired many people , me included.

Well I quite enjoyed it.  Nice relaxing programme, no violence or swearing.  The gnomes made me laugh, but I do hate gnomes.  I expect he will be inundated with gnomes now.  Wasn't he a policeman, bit worrying, as he did sound a bit odd. The only thing I am trying is putting a tea bag in the bottom of pots when potting on, gets rid of old tea bags and saves a bit of compost.  And the foil thing seems quite good as I have to keep turning my seeds round on the window ledge to stop them growing towards the light.  I suppose it is just trying to reach a wider audience and it not really a specialist garden programme.  I think Joe's allotment is on next week, and yes he has still got it but doesn't spend a lot of time there as he is not retired like a lot of us who can spend weekdays there. I think the BBC are looking for new ideas for the programme so why not email them or write and tell them what you think of it and suggestions for what you would like to see.  Glad to know that I am in fashion because I don't plant in straight lines and everything seems to get mixed up and grows where it likes, often hidden amongst other plants which is good as birds don't seem to attack it so much.  Drives OH mad as he thinks everything should be straight and I should use a line (boring).  The only trouble is I forget where things are planted and dig them up by accident.  What did they call it, something to do with parrots, well that is what I do.

I have just had the most brilliant, brainwave of an idea.  Why don't we get Saddad or Tim on Gardeners World, we could make them TV stars, but perhaps they wouldn't like the money and publicity.  We should suggest that to the BBC and everyone on here would be happy. Perhaps they could go around the country and interview everyone on here and they could all have their say.  What do you think??  Good idea.  Think programme on Friday was more suitable for children, but some of the TV audience do have 'not an awful lot of brain' if that is a polite way of putting it.

I have to agree with most of you. It has not been a gardening programme for a good few years and I don't want Monty back either. Can't the BBC find a good ,honest gardener, with years of experince and gets his hands dirty. One who shows how to dig, sow, plant veg. Maybe has a greenhouse etc. I am quite serious about this.
Get cracking NOW BBC and find, ready for next series.

Gave it another try last night but never again biggest load of c*ap on the TV. The programme is all over the place and no useful advice is given. I agree with DERYCK32 the BBC need to get someone who gets there hands dirty like the late Geoffrey Smith used to. It sounded like such a good idea when they took a vacant plot on but the chance of putting a really good gardening programme on as been wasted. Cannot a BBC editor go around the country looking at allotment sites and pick out one or two good gardeners out to make a decent gardening programme for once... PLEASE.

I'm not that keen on it  :( I've given it my best shot though. A lot of poncing about putting things in pots and smiling at the camera and making inane jokes.

It seems to be like an 'amateur' show, when historically, it has been  sophisticated AND simplified enough to appeal to experts and beginners alike.

Having said that ....

I'll be on a GW Special soon: Carol Klein covering the history of women gardeners! They filmed a load of us females on my allotment  ;D

I watch 'Beechgrove' on Iplayer (Scotlands Garden show) and it feels like good old gardeners world. What was the kid brought in for? I don't mind Alys but being shown how to sow tom seeds like a 5 year old really wasn't good!

I quite like it, its a bit fresher apart from 'whats hot and whats not' and 'blue peter' alice. It seems to be aimed more at novices I suppose and to get people interested in gardening.

Bob Flowerdew should have been the main man.

Yes Rosebud, this is a link to their website http://www.beechgrove.co.uk/apply but I normally go onto Iplayer ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/  and type 'Beechgrove garden' into the search space at the top. There is also 'Beechgrove potting shed' (radio programme) which can be heard through Iplayer, a bit like 'Gardener's Question Time'

Oh, I dunno  ???. I agree - it's all a bit of a mish mash of ill fitting pieces (especially the `what's hot' section) & all the chumminess is so overhammed it's painful, but overall I don't mind it. I quite like the jolly little picture / tune thing they use to divide the sections of the program.

I do wish I'd seen tonight's asparagus bed bit a few weeks ago tho.... a much better way than my lobbing them in at the right depth (not that my way didn't work too).

I got ticked off by husband tonight.  I considered they were being patronising in treating their audience as if they were completely stupid know-nothings.  Husband said they were taking account of people who really didn't know first principles of gardening.

I just about tolerated the item on mixing seed with sand to broadcast in a bed - though it did drag on a bit long. What I didn't get was why we then had to spend even more time watching him mix a lot of seed in a lot of sand and then spread it over a really big area.  Surely even the complete amateurs got it the first time?  ::)  Too self-indulgent and too much of a filler item.

This is how the government are going to try and get everyone to eat their 5 a day without paying advertising costs, methinks.  ::)

You too can have your five a day grown in your very own London garden (probably only around a couple of million or so quid to buy), and look like Sara Cox.  Who doesn't actually look like she eats five a day of anything - except maybe rice cakes.  ::)  ;)

I don't think I like the new Gardners World - seems to be a little boring at times. But I am not sure what needs to be done to pep it up - other than talking to us like we weren't nine yr olds.

I quite like it, cause it sent me to sleep.  Very relaxing and pleasant, even missed East Enders to watch it, but kept switching back to watch Phil drunk and other unpleasant things.  I agree it is a programme (Gardeners World, not Eastenders) I could watch with my grandchildren, although they are bored with it and would rather watch 'Dr Who' as one is in love with David Tennant.  I pretend I am in 'love' with Alan Titchmarsh and she is not impressed.

I don't like it...too "chummy/dumbed down". I am by no means an expert but it reminded me of a cross between Blue Peter/Greenham Common. It was more like a kiddies show than a gardening one.

I learned sooooo much from Geoff Hamilton, he inspired me...made my own coldframes years ago because of him.....he made you think/realise that you could have a nice garden without a huge budget
This lot make me cringe  and irritate me due to the hamminess and pretend relationships.

Beechgrove Garden is super! Used to watch it when living at home in Glasgow :)

I used to live round the corner from the beechgrove garden.

Aberdeens an odd place, I know cause thats where I'm from.

Its quite often really sunny so you go out with a t-shirt on, only to discover the wind chill has brought the temperature down to -35 and you instantly turn into an ice cube.
