Does anyone know how much a bale of straw costs these days? Our last bulk delivery was three years ago and I think they were £2 or £3 then.

Just a thought if you are buying straw.
Make sure that it was not treated with a herbicide.
Most people know about the herbicide problem, I know.

Thanks for reminding me. We didn't buy any last year because we didn't want to risk it.

I wonder if your large oblongs are the same size as the ones we had. If so, £8 is quite expensive and I don't think many of our plotholders would want it.

Never thought of it like that ;D but I must have been living in the HereAfter for years now.

Aminopyralid isn't licensed for use on cereal crops, so cereal straw is fine. It's hay, silage and grass-based products that are the problem.

I can just about lift one of the ones we had. It's a bit difficult to describe the size from memory, but something like 3ft x 2ft x 18"

we bought one that size from the horse suppy place for the chickens..2.80 ;D

Single sized bale, £1.50p
But I buy the treble sized ones, 5ft x 18" x 3ft (all measurements are 'ish) for £3. (collect) ;)

I got mine from a local farm - I think it was £1.50 for the bale. I saw one of the guys on the allotment with straw under his strawerries and he advised where to get it from.

Do you think strwberryies are best with straw under them? I heardd that slugs breed like mad under there. I fancy havng a go though to keep weeds down and strawberries off the dirt.

Do you think strwberryies are best with straw under them? I heardd that slugs breed like mad under there. I fancy havng a go though to keep weeds down and strawberries off the dirt.
Thats what I do Carcan, not sure about the breeding ground for slugs bit though, but it does seem to work in that the strawbs are kept off the ground. I was thinking of trying to use shredded paper instead this year to see if it is as effective as straw. Some people use weed suppressant for the strawb bed that way it keeps the weeds down as well!

that right saddad,you need a forklift
to move the large ones
At 18 I worked on a pig farm, tried to move one myself which was sat on a trailer wonky and tore the muscle in my right shouler. Still gives me problems 7 years later!
Learned how great forklifts were after that ....and asking for help :D
