Title: Support rods.
Post by: telboy on February 18, 2009, 17:56:20
I would like to grow a lot more peas this year. A kind villager has given me 3 rolls of redundant 3' chicken wire. I have a couple of rolls which are now 30 yrs. old so I'm delighted. I use aluminium stakes & string the wire to it in 30' runs. This has been very successful for the 30 yrs. so would like to continue.
Any ideas for 4' stakes - not wooden?

Why 4'? I grow tall peas on a similar system but use two layers of wire and a babmboo tripod affair, sometimes the wind blows them over, but not often...  :-X

What size pea do you grow? I grow tall varieties on wigwams of 8-foot bamboos, but that might not be at all relevant to what you grow.

Thanks for your replies,
I grow 3' varieties up 3' mesh attached to 4' - 'ali' poles pushed down 1' in straight rows.
Want to continue this way. I plant a triple row of seed & when showing, set the already tied- in chicken wire (in rolls).
Can you suggest some support mechanisms other than wood?
Electric fencing supports perhaps from an Agri merchant?

Angle iron fence supports, from a fencing contractor. they have drilled holes at about 1 foot centres on one side.  ;)

My father got some 1/2" steel reinforcing rods in 1945, to use for runner beans (8ft long). I am still using them.
