Title: When is the best time to use chicken manure pellets?
Post by: 70fingers on January 29, 2009, 17:18:07
Hi all,

Not logged in for a while but have been reading the posts over the year.

Ok, well we have had a few good days this week, clearing some of the weeds and digging (oh my poor back).  So what do we do now? Was thinking about feeding the soil with some chicken manure pellets - is it too soon to sprinkle them on? We still have a couple of months before we start planting will the nutirents get washed away before we plant?

Many thanks,
Clive

I normally put a few in the hole when I'm planting out lettuce, etc. But I forked over the frame where I grow my early stuff the other day and forked a load of pellets in as well.

Sorry - I think I'm saying I don't really know! I'll be interested to find out what others do.

I'd like to know too. I want to put them round my fruit bushes.

I sprinkle it around my raspberry bushes and as a top dressing on my asparagus in February, before things start into active growth in spring.  I understand it is rich in nitrogen and potassium, so it helps the growth of both leaves and fruit/flowers as long as you don't overdo it.

we usually sprinkle some around where the plant is going to go, just before we plant  :)

It depends, are you feeding the soil, or the plant? ;)

I normally mix them in when I plant my hanging baskets and sprinkled around when I plant out seedlings or as a boost for the containers of fuchsias etc at the end of March

Supposed to be good as a compost activator too. BTW, Wilkinson's have got 4kg boxes for 2.99 (sorry to go off-thread!)

Bless you for going off-thread. Now added to my Wilko's look-out-for list! 8)

For me, it's as tony said...feeding & putting into good heart the soil or for the plant?

For the soil, it doesn't add bulk or humus, the source of organic matter,  but as a supplement to..

Therefore I follow the guidelines in my booklet, bulk up the soil during the winter before planting then add J.Arthur Bowers (only cos I get boxes cheap in the sales not cos I'm particularly endorsing that company) for the patch - be it bone meal, ammonia, potash, sulphates etc....

Then, when I plant out, I do as others, above, and continue through the growing season.

Might have got it wrong, but hey! works for me ;D
