Title: SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: mat on January 29, 2009, 12:42:00
Yet more snow is forecast from Sunday through to Wednesday... lets hope I get loads again... (yes, I am a big kid!)

I like the seasons to be as they should - snow and frost in Winter is wonderful!!! (warm wet winters are miserable for me and all the bugs survive that shouldn't)

I am NE of York (North Yorkshire surprisingly!) - as per my avatar.  Unfortunately for you Old Bird, the snow is coming from the East, so you are unlikely to get it in Minehead... as per the forecasts so far

have a look at:

Well the last two snowfalls earlier this month left us stranded and took us two hours each time to dig ourselves out of our road to get to work, with OH sharing a few expletives or two!

In his infinite wisdom, he decided it was the car that was not gripping which then in effect caused us to be stranded, so off we go and buy a new car which arrived onto our drive just four hours ago!

So now I read on this thread we are due snow in the next few days  ::) .....hmmmmm......so will the expletives diminish or will they in fact triple when the new car is put to the test in the snow...time will tell, we shall see  ;D

The weather doesn't look so good for next week.  Snow again.  I don't mind that so much, but it looks like it will be extremely cold along with the snow.

We have winter tyres on at the moment, partly because we often go to Germany in the winter, and it is obligatory there. Insurance is invalid if you have an accident in the winter and have not got winter tyres on.

Came home via Dover one winter after a fall of snow, and I was impressed by their success. Lorries were sliding about and blocking the road uphill out of Dover, but our car was rock steady, and I was able to turn round and leave Dover by another route, also uphill, past cars that couldn't make it. I hadn't really believed in the tyres until then.

We tend to get good days when I look after our grandson and wet and wild days when I have the time to go digging. I'll ask the snow to come your way as it is stop start here. ;)

Not sure if we will be getting much here in Dorset - it depends which forecast you read i think!. Just dry dull and very cold here at the moment. essentialy boring TBH.

I quite like snow (when it comes), we have it so rarely these days it is a bit of a treat really. if i am free i like to go out into the ggarden with the camera and take a few photos and generaly marvel at how the snow changes the garden. Unfortunately my appreciation of snow is not enjoyed by the rest of the family. Dad in particular hates the stuff and is like a cat on hot coals when there is any about!

The trouble is that even in the colder parts of the UK, snow comes so infrequently that when it does come we are not used to it. Thats when just a few centimetres can cause havoc, as everyone tries to carry on as normal. Our forebears were much more used to it and knew how to adapt their lives to heavy snows.

So just for those who think what we are about to get is bad, read the info in the following link and it will not seem so bad after all!!

We have had snow forecast for up here in Bonny but cold Scotland, we should have ours this afternoon and into Monday but so far it is a lovely day bit on the cold side, chickens are aroaming round the garden and making it a bigger mess then it was before I let them out.  Still snow will cover it all and make it look so nice.  Got plenty of food, in, fuel to keep us warm in case we get snowed in - exciting.
Regards Cindy

Nothing down my way yet, we rarely get it unless it comes in from the East, which this lot appears to be.  Plenty of freezing temperatures though, couple of weeks back the docks had ice floating in them, which is only the second time in ten years.  Fingers crossed we get some, the dogs/kids love it!  ;D

Just popped up to the plot to get rid of some compost material. It's bitterly cold with a very keen east wind - one couple just finished their digging and a 2 guys with bonfires!

The gritting lorry passed me as I drove home and now the snow's just starting. We don't want too much of it - it's our AGM tomorrow night!

Only a couple of flurries of snow today (one of them not so much falling as scuttling sideways because of the icy wind)...

But I'm looking at the weirdest sight right now. In an otherwise cloudless sunset sky, there is one large purple cloud with snow pouring out from under it. Very strange to see... Particularly since I suspect said snow is falling on Heathrow.  ::)

We had a snow blizzard right at the moment I needed some rosemary from outside for my lamb! We're expecting heavy snow much to the disappointment of my oldest son who is busy doing coursework for his A levels and doesn't want to waste a day. We're only a short distance from school but most of the teachers don't live in the same town so they don't get here when it snows meaning the school closes.

Morning Hopalong: sounds like the same blizzard that's sitting over us here in Middlesex. It's not stopped snowing since I clocked off last night, we have 4 inches-plus outside the front door.

Thifasmom, same here -- two frantically excited children have just heard that school's closed for the day. Just as well; we have to travel by tube or bus, and there's precious little of the one and none at all of the other this morning.  ;D

We've got it now!!!  Chucking it down

Have had to cancel today.  Just tried to find out about SW Trains' reduced service - their website has crashed!

8.20 a.m. and no car has passed our house - don't think we'll see the milkman today.

Must be about 15cm here too and it's still coming down.  OH left for work in Westminster an hour ago - not sure how far he'll get.   :(  Just took this from the warmth of the kitchen.

Phoned Capel Manor earlier to see if it was open (usually do a course there on Mondays).  They said: "No decision has been made yet but we've got 12 inches of snow!" Think I'll stay at home today!  8)

Well hopalong my worst fears have come true, woke up to around 6" :o  Can't get the car out of the garage and needless to say daughter could not get to work. It has started to come down again quite thickly.  The birds seem to be enjoying it. The ground feeders however have had to resort to the hanging feeders. We even have blackbirds balancing on the peanut feeder. We are in South Herts by the way.

It's fantastic!!!  I love it!!!  Got into work about 20 minutes late - although in all honesty, we didn't set off any earlier, hehe.  Stepped out of the front door and disappeared in the snow to just over my shins!  Looks absolutely gorgeous around here and I wish I'd brought my camera as my office is on the other side of the road to a forest which looks beautiful.  First port of call was to go back out and feed all of the birds  ;D ;D  Will probably leave an hour or so early though because the roads here are pretty quiet and we've been forecast very heavy snow from about 2pm onwards and we don't want to get stranded on icy roads in the dark, LOL.

I dunno, all the lightweights in schools these days - I remember being at school in snow half way up my legs when I was a kid, even remember winters in school when the heating was busted and we just got on with it! Anything less than a tropical climate and everybody stays home these days   ;) ;D

Have fun everybody and take care!  :)

Edit:  Welcome, Molly.  I missed your post first time around :)

Wow, what a night. Went to bed thinking we would not get any snow as it was quite clear and frosty when I went to bed last night. Woke up and put the radio on tho listen to all the snow reports on 5 Live. Seemed as if the now was over east as expected. Then heard that Southampton Airport was closed and decided at that point to look out of the window. Not much but a definite covering of between  and 10mm greeted me. i know that's not much compared to what some of you have had, but considering we have not had a substantial snowfall here for about 3 years, and were not expecting any this time, it was quite a surprise.

Currently we have just had another snow shower and the sun has now come out. This makes the view out the window quite picturesque really.

Panic has set in across southern England following an outbreak of powdery white stuff, known in some parts as "snow". Whole communities have been cut off, including most of Kent, as residents were unable to leave their homes for fear of "being cold" or "getting wet".

"This is possibly the greatest threat to our county since the Second World War," said Douglas Ramsbottom, a spokesman for Kent County Council which is currently located in a top-secret concrete bunker. "We are under attack. Enormous lumps of ice - some measuring as much as three centimetres across - are raining down on us from the heavens. May God have mercy on us all."

The government has appealed for calm. Home Secretary Charles Clarke also confirmed that under his proposed anti-terrorism legislation it would be illegal for snow to fall south of Lincolnshire, and anyone caught in possession of "snowballs of mass destruction" would be placed under house arrest.

The British transport system has predictably ground to a halt, with dozens of trains being cancelled after "the wrong type of snow" fell on some lines. Schools have also been closed in compliance with government regulations about faulty boilers, leaving many children playing outside with the aforementioned snow. Police have warned them not to touch the unknown substance as it may be dangerous.

Panic buying has meanwhile begun in Norwich after a supermarket manager revealed that the city could run out of food in as little as three months if he does not receive any new deliveries. "We are placing restrictions on what people can buy so that, even in the worst case scenario, we'll have enough food to go around," he said. "From today until this terrible weather is over there will be strictly one egg, piece of tofu and carton of Yazoo milk per person. I would urge people not to stockpile food."

Spokesmen for the RAF and the Red Cross said that they have contingency plans for emergency food drops for Norwich, but they only had enough maize to feed three people and a chicken. It is understood that the Disasters Emergency Committee will divert some of the funding intended for victims of the Asian tsunami to this new and much more serious cause, while a charity single is in the offing.

The United States has offered to send in troops to "liberate" the beleaguered people of southern England from the oppressive weather, and that offer is said to be under consideration.

The south of England has not been the only part of the UK to be hit by snow, however. In East Yorkshire some people were late for work because the roads were busier than normal and in Newcastle one local dressed in a t-shirt said that it was "a bit nippy", while in Scotland people built snowmen.

Late news
Police are investigating after a powdery white substance was posted through the letterboxes of several houses in Canterbury. The area has been sealed off and victims have been put into isolation in hospital. A spokesman for the anti-terrorism branch said that so far there had been no fatalities.

What frustrates me though is that we had far more before Christmas, plus temperature lower than -8... did that make the news? no.  because this has come to London this time, its in the news everwhere!!!

I have had a flu type bug for 4 weeks, and am still stuck in bed... Otherwise I'd have loved to be walking in the hills from my house - grrrrrrr

Mat, that's because the northern half of the UK is used to yearly heavy snow falls whereas London et al is not.  It's headless chicken territory when anything more than half an inch of snow falls here in Essex.  It's just ridiculous.  What frustrates me more is how this snow has been forecast for the past 4-5 days and still the buses/trains/schools/work come to a standstill.  There's no excuse for it.

Still snowing here in W. Essex and I love it! I cleared the path outside of my office about an hour ago and it's covered again already  ;D ;D

Both on the today programme and World at one I heard someone from the Highways agency saying that they had managed to keep most of the main roads clear (which is certainly the case around here) and that delays were due to drivers not taking care and having minor accidents which then block the roads.

The interviewers in both cases seemed to ignore this and went on the attack again, saying "you had plenty of warning". Yes they did and they did a good job- it's not their fault if drivers don't know how to drive in snow! They can't win,can they?

You can't blame anybody really. Who wants a snowplough/gritting lorry paid for from your council tax. I think we can all think of better ways to spend the money. Other countries get by because they get the use of their equipment for far longer and on more occasions. If you needed to be somewhere important today, you should have cancelled your meetings last friday, You knew it was coming. Also whats wrong with working from home via the internet, just like I am supposed to be doing ;D.

I have really got quite a bit sorted today. I have researched £900 worth of plant plugs, £1000 worth of potted roses and still managed a bit of free time on here.

....  I cleared the path outside of my office about an hour ago and it's covered again already  ;D ;D

In a nutshell, that's exactly why (for once) I don't think it's fair to blame the London councils, highways agency or Boris.

The gritters were out from yesterday afternoon, gritting all the main roads. And they haven't stopped (one passed me as I was hiking down my high street and what's more, it had a crew on foot with it, spreading shovelfuls of grit on the pavements. Now that's a first - and I'm so grateful.  :)
So the grit's there -- it's just buried under 5-inches-plus of snow which fell right through the night, like your cleared pathway.
What else could they have done? For snow like this, you need snowploughs. If you live in Cumbria or Scotland, that's a worthwhile council-tax expense. But this is the first meaningful snow we've had in London since Jan/Feb 2003 - and "the worst in 18 years", according to the Met Office. Being forewarned isn't always enough, I guess.

My husband set off at 7.00 and drove to Leicester (100 miles)- didn't takeany longer than usualbecause although the traffic was slower, there was less of it. Peopleliving half an hour fromthe office rang in saying they couldn't get there, and at 12.00 those who were there were told to go home so he wasback here at 2.15. After quite a significant thaw yesterday afternoon, the smow came back again last night and replaced what had thawed away. This morning woke to a nice covering so dashed out and took some photos. Then the sun came out and it began to thaw again. Snowing again now though and still bitterly cold.

last night during and just after the snow was quite eerie. the local area was so quiet, no passing traffic or any sound of human activity at all. Now even at the quietest of times there is usually some noise from passing traffic but last night nothing. its strange the effects snow can have.

Felt for the radio Derby announcers this morning and their 11 page list of school closures.

Youngest is delighted - his school was the only one in this area that opened on Wednesday, but even they've had to give up today because the buses couldn't get through. As the bus picks up in our village at 10 past eight, would have been nice if they'd notified us before 9.35 though. We still aren't on the list ::) although that's where the school said they would put details.

Another inch or two here in Birmingham overnight, which means the City has ground to a halt, no trains or buses, schools and collages closed irrespective of staff getting in or not.

However, long queues reported to get in & out of all the supermarkets and Blockbusters.  ???

Was supposed to be at the Queen Elizabeth this morning.

Have too much experience of Birmingham roads in the snow so I cancelled. :)

Just managed to clear a footpath down the drive, almost a pleasure  ;D ;D

It's drizzling here too, so the snow is melting - but it always seems to stay longer in our road because it's never gritted and there isn't much traffic. Recycling bins not collected today.

Snow completely gone by yesterday evening but woke up at 6.30am this morning to find about 4ins of snow, has stopped snowing now. Dog (KC Spaniel) wasn't content to just go straight out in the garden and do what ever she needed to do, just kept shuffling round and round, when she came in I had to remove lumps of snow from her stomach. Next time I will buy a Greyhound ;D. Son-in-law had my car overnight returned it at 7am this morning, I told him to leave it outside in the road. I have just put it in the garage as there are still idiots driving down our side road far faster than is safe.

Pah, no snow here in W. Essex  >:(  It's all rain and it's washing away what's still around.  Although it's a heck of a lot easier to walk about now.  I'd done several impressive torville and dean moves whilst on my way to various places (not excluding my office and there's CCTV outside  :-[)

the_goodlife - I hope so!  ;D ;D  I know we've been forecast snow showers early tomorrow but nothing on Monday's scale - and it won't settle now anyway, it's too wet out there.  Ah well, it was fun while it lasted :)

What area are you garden girl? :) :)

We are in South Herts Taurus.  Been raining here this morning which has made the pavements even more slippy with the hard lumps of icy snow turning to slush.  Nearly slipped over a few times when walking round to our local shops this morning :o

Same here Kev... and the radio have just given out heavy snow overnight for the East Midlands... (Shame!) Main roads clear but still loads on side roads and pavements. I listened to that list as well Timnsal... but Derby Moor didn't post either so I drove Andy there to be turned round at the gate.. I mentioned the snowline and was told they were going to do it now...  ::)

My son has just run out of the house to go and play out, wearing warm gloves, a wooly hat, two big jumpers, and.........shorts?! ::)

I wouldn't have minded the omission so much, except for the message on the school's website to check on radio Derby and the link to their website ::)

I can't see it Sam.   need to install Adobe  AGAIN.

Its been snowing off and on all morning but just the fine stuff so no problems.  Its going to be an exceptionally cold night though.  I keep thinking of the poor folk who are homeless.  How do they sleep out in conditions like it is just now.
