Title: Which Potato variety will give me a chance for the biggest spud......
Post by: TonyM on January 02, 2009, 17:47:23
Hi, as above, can anyone help me out with the dilemma? Are some varieties better than others for giving a big spud rather than a high yield per plant?

Thanks
TonyM (on behalf of the wife who is already planning the show entries.....)

Tony M whatever spud you decide on, just rub all the chits off bar one of your seeded spud and the energy's should be put into growing one or two larger spuds, if that makes sense.  ???    :-\         :P      ;D ;D ;D

My biggest potato this year were the Picasso - also great tasting. I planted them later than the rest (April) and harvested them last weekend in August. Majority slug free - but some got nibbled.

cornykev it make sence in they but not in practice since the eyes will resprout.

King Edward should be a good variety to grow.
Since have seen contest results of 8 lbs from this variety pre Guinness.

You are best to cut some of the eyes out with a sharp knife then they will not re-grow ;)

Desiree grows biggest (by far) on the clay soil on our allotment site, if you add plenty of manure.  The old hands all swear by it. Other varieties no doubt grow bigger on other soils.
