Title: Any ideas?
Post by: markymark on December 31, 2003, 17:19:58
When I cleared and dug my allotment I had to contend with a fair amount of concrete posts, kitchen sinks, chimney stacks, fireplaces.

As there was no where else close to dump this, and some of it was only just about liftable, I decided to stack this across the far end of the plot.

I therefore have a mound which is some 14ft long, around 6 ft across and approx 4 1/2 foot high!

Although I covered it all with soil, I am at a loss what to now do with this? Ideally I would like to cover it with an evergreen, or alternatively have looked recently at something that looks like bamboo (but isn't, and is non invassive)? If anyone has any other ideas I would be grateful for any other suggestions.....I know what an imaginative lot you all are ;D

It was suggested by our association chairman that I might want to barrow this mound week by week to a dumping place over the other side of the site, but I don't want to do this as, when clearing the site it was loaded with green lizards, frogs and nest's of slow worms which I housed in said mound, in the hopes that they might fancy a few slugs when they emerge again from hibernation?

Thanks for your help, and A HUGE HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all.

Have a fab one

Hiya! Being neither huge or possessed of imagination, why not check out the ground-cover 'thread? Think that as the soil depth will be variable, likewise soil conditions, you could do something with thymes, marjorams?

Like I said...clean out of imagination, which is being directed at the mo. to how I can enter Thailand with a caseful of drugs and without a visa an blag my way through it?... tho, come to think of it...have dug myself into such deep poo, mahn! the veggies I'll grow next year will be the envy of you all!! - cheers, Lish

Rock garden of herbs?  Creeping thyme, rosemary, marjorum, nasturtiums at the bottom, anything else anyone else has to suggest.  Sounds ripe for conversion to me! :D

Thanks for the suggestion MuddyBoots.

I think your bang on with the herbs, always think about growing them, but can never seem to find a permanent place.

Fab idea

Glad you like the idea.  Thing is, so many herbs don't need too much water so survive quite well in those conditions.  You could intersperse with aubretia or monbretia (sp), helianthemum, very pretty and colourful!  Sorry, just in case, I mean rock roses! :)
