In order to discourage the proliferation of odd-shaped vegetables now that the restrictions  have been relaxed,  DEFRA has announced that HM Government has instructed them to explore ways to tax vegetables that do not conform to the previous rules.
The new tax is expected to be in place by 1st April 2009.

I hope that by leaking this information that I am not raided by the anti-terrorist unit.

yeah - best not to get too hot under the collar about anything reported by the daily mail. Not the most impartial of sources! All tabloids have been known to publish hearsay as fact ...

Pigeonseed has things in perspective. there are all sorts of tales about EU rulings that the DM newspaper and also the DT take and twist so much that their readers are led into dead ends.

I start from the premise that all Journalists and Politicians are liars. You won't go far wrong then.

If that is to back up your earlier post (about a typical Daily Fascist article that I read online ages ago) then check what it says at the end of the headline - in fact I will quote it:

Latest Government stealth tax: £50 compost heap levy to hit schools and charities  The Daily Mail Read News Article
Obviously a bit peeved about the soon to be new top rate tax band!!! ;D

Come on! If we're going to quote things, please keep it objective! The Daily Mail is not a source of news, it is a source of panic, fear & hatred. The other thing's quite frankly bizarre...

In actual fact im a gardener and i earned just £12,000 last year so im FAR from worring about them bringing in the higher bracket tax.

And lets be honest this government have a fantastic track record of introducing stealth taxes, and have made far bigger mistakes, its hardly a Daily Mail thing is it, just look around you......if i was to say they were totally imcompetent in 99.9% of things they have done in the past 11 years it would be the understatement of all time.

Wot, calling people communists, barely disguised swearing, disparaging remarks about someone's nationality - all placed on the most visited board (Edible Plants) for the maximum attention instead of on the News board or better yet in the Watershed?

Ooh stop it, my sides are hurting

"There are around 2553 sites in the UK which are currently registered as composting biodegradable waste.
Under the rule changes, 1685 - or 66 per cent of these - will in future require a permit at a cost of £600 each. The remainder will have to pay the £50 charge to register every three years."
Taken from the Daily Mail article.

So these are registered waste disposal sites under the current regulations which are pretty stringent. Exactly how many schools and charities with a normal compost heap are registered? Hear a pin drop? None?? Are these then the council sites that compost home waste, or the commercial sites such as Sita and Biffa?  I think so. They are businesses and have to register.

There is no information that the registration scheme is extending to compost heaps in general, so you, I, schools and charities aren't affected.

God I love the Daily Mail who currently seem to be competing with the jouranlistic standards of The Sunday Sport.

I also agree that this thread should have been in The Shed, News or Watershed. No politics in  Edibles please.  :-\

That scurrilous rag winds me and as my parents and inlaws both get it, I have plenty of opportunity to get wound up.  In fact, it is the amount of people who get it and believe it chapter and verse that worries me more.  I worry for the future of our society and country enough without people believe the complete crap in that rag.

They did once do a very good piece about the alleged killers of Stephen Lawrence - I hoped it was a turning point - but it wasn't  :-\

And I do owe an apology about to 7oaks about the tax rate - it was a cheap jibe and wrong (he says wiping egg off his face)

I can honestly say that i have NEVER read the Daily Mail so have no affinity to it whatsoever, i just stumbled upon the compost stealth tax on another allotment website.

As for believing the so called Daily Mail propaganda, well i dont need to read a paper to see whats happening to the country, all i need is my ears, my eyes and my brain........it dosn't take a rocket scientist to see exactly whats happening in so many area of this country.

The mail just rewrote an article published in the telegraph the day before. The story is essentially true but they seem to of missed the bit that says although the £50 fee will have to be paid every 3 years the schools, charities etc can then claim it  back through grants.

In fact, it is the amount of people who get it and believe it chapter and verse that worries me more.

I feel a bit depressed when I see people reading it. It's a nasty paper. It is successful by making people scared and angry, but about things we don't need to be scared or angry about (compost heaps/single women drinking/baa baa black sheep etc).

Years ago some newsreader looked a bit silly by saying we should have more happy news. I now believe that is actually a radical and progressive idea. It might not sell papers, but it might make us more positive and constructive.

It's all very well having a pop at the Daily Mail but I remember for years the BBC and the Guardian denied that there were ever rules about the shape of fruit and veg - calling people who knew better conspiracy theorists and believing in myth. Surprise, surprise some of those who actually knew EU regulations were right.

Noooooo!

As if I have not got enough worries with the present proposed congestion charge for Manchester which as a household if accepted, is just gonna kill us  :o

Its official!

The UK has flipped its lid !

Edinburgh rejected the proposed congestion charges. Since then there have been so many roadworks all over the city that you are held up no matter where and when you are going. Coincidence? I doubt it.
