Title: Started building the allotment shed today
Post by: nilly71 on November 22, 2008, 20:25:28
I built the front and back frames for the shed today :).
No plans, which is unusal for me ;D,
We are only allowed a 6'x4'. Two 24" doors will be at the front which leaves 12" either end to be used for shelves, it will be just over 7' high inside with a slight slope towards the back.

Picture of the start of the back frame.

Snowing this morning >:( as soon as it stopped i went to the plot, got half way making the base and it p*ssed down.

That childrens gazibo cost £2 from woolworths and has done well keeping me dry,  but it was freezing today.

As soon as it stopped raining long enough i finished the base and cemented the base legs in. I'm not going to get down there this week so wanted to at least get the base done.

I'm gutted that now i've started, i can't get get back down there until next week :(.

It's so frustrating only having the weekends to do any working at this time of year. Still not many more weeks left before the shortest day is here.

I finaly got the chance to get back down there at the weekend. In between the rain i managed to get 3 sides done and put up to posts for the pergular.

The frame on the floor is just so i could get the posts in the right place.
Bought two doors and a circular patio of ebay, just need to collect them. By the end of the week hopefuly it will look more like a shed.

It did, but not dry :( the kids gizibo is still being used :)

what will you grow over it ?

Thanks, I have a grape vine ready to go in as soon as it's built.
My kiwi is a mini and being grown in the front right of the plot(if it comes back to life).

  Hi nilly,

Have had a grape growing in my last home, after two years it went  ' ballistic ',  on a gizibo style,

  trellice arrangement -    ::)

Had loads of tiny flowers , then loads of tiny grapes  --  then moved house !

Will say -- prune hard !  as I spent many happy hours clawing back the tendrils that were hell
bent on occupying nextdoors apple tree  --  honestly, they went more than 6ft on the horizontal !

Have fun and enjoy - get the demi-johns in now!

Roof went on yesterday, just got to cut the ply to size. It was a real pain trying to reach the top of the shed with the ply. I had to climb on a bucket to get on the large plastic container (the top of the roof was upto my chest) then i had to climb to get on top, to nail the sheets of ply down.

I run out of shiplap due to the height.

I've changed the layout of the patio and gazebo as i have bought an 8' circle patio.

The doors should be on Sunday or Monday hopefuly ;D

I really enjoy watching people's projects coming along. Keep up the great work, it's going to be all worth it.
Once you have built it, you know it won't rain ? ;D

Only had about 2 hours spare yesterday, so got the felt on and some more shiplap done.
It's starting looking like a shed now :)

I have been making the raised beds today, it's amazing how much smaller the plot looks with a shed a raised beds :o

Just collected the doors, hopefuly they will go on Tuesday, (but they are the same as we have upstairs indoors and we are two short ???).

Saddad
No, all ok so far.
If i could have the same as hers i would move in ;D

Lauren
That would be typical, but not much chance down here. A pig would be happy rolling around over there, the amount of soggy mud :-\

The shed was designed that both doors open to allow easy access.

We painted it green today, but i did not take a picture :( If i lived in it, would it be classed as a green house ;D

Thanks guys :)

I originaly was going to build a pergular, but now i'm thinking of covering the 4x4 posts with chicken wire and growing climbing plants up them, so it will be 3-4 individual columns. I could still cover the top with something to make shading.

What do you think ???

I think 'GRAPES'  ;)

I have a small grape vine that originaly was going to be used for grpwing over the pergular, but after reading up on grape growing, i found out that i would be better of growing them along a wire support system.

Maybe a few different jasmins or clematis as single columns. ::)

Hi Neil,

Where did you read that about vines being more suited to wire than pergolas? We've finally got our pergola up and planted the vines by it, but from what you've read, it sounds as if we ought to string wire underneath (or above!) the pergola so I'd like to find out more about this.

Happy New Year

I'll try and find the link, but one of the places was a vineyard website.
It will still grow over the top but they recommend for the best crop, to grow along the wires and prune regular. I would rather grow something for the best crop rather than to look good.

Hi Neil,

Don't worry. Now I know the advice came from a vineyard I'll have a scout around myself.

Many thanks,

Barnowl

Just found this thread Nilly and I must say that I am very jealous. What a great looking shed. ;) Mary and I only have a dalek compost bin to try and dart into to keep dry :( (Can u visualise 2 rather well proportioned older ladies trying to keep dry in a dalek. No room to breath!.We must get a shed sorted. Apparently there is a cheap on in Basildon QD for £86. Will need a close look in case it has a leaky roof or something for that money. One down at the local nursery this morning was £270 just delivered. Trust we shall all be invited to the grand opening. All the best.Jean :) :) :)

Everyones welcome, if i ever finnish the plot :-\

A lot of B&Q's were doing ex-display sheds for about £50, make sure you check what size shed you are allowed before buying.

My sister-in-law has a metal shed from Argos for £99, she just laid it on some patio slabs. It's ok for the money and quick to put up but the height is too low for me, i'm about 6'1" and can just about touch the ceiling in mine so have plenty of room to stand up and have stuff hanging above me. It will be ideal when it's time to dig up the onions and garlic. The metal one might be ok for you if you are only allowed a 6'x4' shed and not as tall/fussy as me ;D

Wow that shed is looking great!

Re vines - a few people have them on our site and the person with the biggest lushest one is growing it on a large pergola attached to their shed. It had tons of grapes on it this year, and looks beautiful.
