Title: Bulk loads of compost near Birmingham?
Post by: petelewis on November 19, 2008, 16:08:14
Hi all,

I've just found out that the guy that folks at our allotments usually get bulk compost delivered from is out of action while he's having his machinery fixed.

So, does anyone know of a good source of large loads of compost in or around the Birmingham area? I'd quite like to get a whole load, not just a dumpy bag.

Cheers,

Pete.

I used to post on a forum with a Pete Lewis - Do you have a scooby by any chance?

Sorry, nothing to do with manure!

Most councils will deliver compost for you quite reasonable as well.

Hello Ower Pete! I'm just, sorta,  up the road from you in Bournville and it's good to have a number for bulk deliveries so I'll make a note of that number as well - wonder if he does w/r horse muck too?

I bought mine a couple of years ago and I think it cost about £30 for a load.  It is cow muck but I think he has horse muck as well.  He's over Frankley way and delivered in a tractor!!

Oh forgot to say - I had quite an audience with fellow lotties and they were impressed enough with quantity/quality to give him their orders.

Two years ago I had a truck load (approx 5 or 6 cubic metres) of cow dumped on my lottie for £40.00. Not sur who did it as it was arranged by someone else who was aving the same. But I could find out.

Are we talking about menure or compost. If it is menure I am interested in the source from Frankley as i live in Northfield!

Well, I'm interested in compost really at the moment, though it seems a lot harder to get hold of than manure. The reason is that I want to get a few things going straight away and I believe that I have to wait a while before planting with manure?

Might have to go for manure though if I can't find any big loads of compost. Will give  that guy a call and see what he says - I also asked at the council and they're getting back to me.

Good to hear from so many people nearby! And thanks for the replies so far!

When I want FREE bark I ring Central Trees (they manage trees in north Birmingham, private company, outsourced by the council)

Dave Mulhall (co-ordinator)
0121 776 7769
07734-875-633

or

John Timothy (783 4252) the council co-ordinator,  based in Blakesley Rd, Yardley, round the back of  Heartlands Hospital.

They can redirect a lorry to where ever you want - within reason, or, if you have an opentop truck/trailer/transit  they will load it up for you. ALL FOR FREE.

They have so much of the stuff they don't know what to do with it. Most gets sent to Tyseley to be burnt.

You can use menure provided it is well rotted.
Compost is more difficult to find in bulk To confuse matters it is often called soil improver.
Our allotment in Brum had aload of it a few months back.I think they got it from the Council.
