just started to clear an overgrown area of lottie was lots of old elderberry and some horrible spiky things(got the punctures to prove it)anyway there is a lot of ivy in the area.
how do i clear it?
this will give me an exta 30 foot by 10/12 foot of growing area

You may have blackthorn if it's very 'spiky'. Nasty stuff except for walking stick makers - hey?
Ivy can be dug out fairly easily if it's not long established.
Hard work there then?

TELLBOY WAS HARD WORK BUT worth it for the extra growing area give me something to do when its too wet to dig

Ivy gives me the creeps - and it's always full of beasties! It should mean it's pretty weed free underneath though!

there is a woman on our site called ivy blackthorn how creepy is that she frightens the nuts out of me :o

try to leave some of the ivy, the small birds like to nest in it ;D

Ooh I love ivy! I had some in my hair when I got married - I'm sure that's supposed to be bad luck or something, lucky I'm not superstitious. :D

I love ivy too, but only when its young. I had a job to do years back cutting some.........lots of ivy down. It was so old the trunks on some were like trees. It can be a thug ;)

I love ivy too. Not so the Bearded (if it grows chop it down) Wonder.It clothes our wall between the Pub car park and us, but we gave it a trim late summer and I have to admit it has behaved in a very neat way. Wouldn't want it on the plot though, if you keep ripping it out it should grow less, otherwise maybe poison has to be the answer.
Anyway wont you need it for your Christmas deccies Steve? It looks lovely draped about in garlands with some sparkly stuff and it's FREE ;D

I can't see that ivy would need poison, bit drastic? Hacking it down, certainly,digging up & pulling out where it's layered, yes, and poss that Root-out stuff applied to the root stumps this winter & covered with black plastic til spring should sort out the main trunk bits. Gotta admit, tho, that I'm another ivy lover...for the birds' sake as well as my own.

Well we are going to plant some to screen part of the garden so i hope it does not take over . Mind you we HOPE to be moved by next summer.

I wish I could get rid of mine, flipping stuff is growing all over the outhouse, a shed is next door and d**n stuff is also growing in the gap between the two buildings.
I do have some growing over the wrought iron arch and fence which I can control. Must agree that looks quite nice, especially the variegated leaf one

this was the before,roots as thick as your thumb hard going but will be worth it in the end

I was going to say that although I don't like Ivy much except for the one I have covering a wall on our drive which has massive leaves and is very white in parts, that insect life is good for our gardens - well,mostly - and they need a habitat somewhere but probably not on an allotment.
