I know there are some other sufferers on hear so I thought I would start a thread for seed addicts anonymous as I can no longer go anywear without purchasing swapping or mentioning seeds
I realised to day when I went for bread and milk and the bill came to £17.85 that I had a serious problem (only £2.96 was for bread and milk ::) ) and was in desperate need to contact other sufferers ;D

I have suffered from plant/flower/seed addiction for many years. I do not think there is any cure. I used to have a paper and pen addiction and couldn't go to Rymans or Smiths. I do try to avoid Homebase, B & Q, Woolworth but have been known to sneak a few packets of seeds into my basket at Morrisons but luckily they are not selling them at present. If you know the gardening section in a shop you can always afford that aisle or go with OH who is impatient and moans a lot so it is difficult to buy anything. Anyhow it could be worse, some people have addictions to clothes and shoes and they are much more expensive.

But that's how it starts for many! A bit of cress here, a few sprouting seeds there, and next thing you know you have a full blown seed habit with boxes full of the things hidden under the bed.
You know you have a problem when you start doing it behind the other half's back - sneaking them home while they're asleep... hiding receipts...

The need for seed.
There is not a Seed Tsar so it can't be a problem, then again I have just saved some tom seeds from lunch.

When Gordon tugs on my arm at the garden centre or in the supermarket I know he is trying to steer me away from the seed racks. That's when I say "oh, I'll just have a quick look", so I guess I need SAA too ;D.

and this time of year, when it is too wet and miserable to go to the allotment, what better way to pass a wet Sunday afternoon but go through the seed catalogues that are coming through the door at this time of year and start planning for next year!

My sat nav is set for the seed stands at the garden centres. Wyvale had a 50p sale and I couldn't resist buying a couple (gross) of packets. I don't want to be cured :-*

I do find that this seed addiction gets worse as one gets older, when I was young I was out at discos but find younger people nowadays hanging around gardening centres begging for seeds. Do we have all night seed shops yet, in case one gets desperate at night. Better stop reading this post or will have to pop out to the supermarket and see if they have any seeds in stock. Perhaps they should put seed dispensers in toilets next to the 'y no what'. Seed packets with health warnings on. Perhaps we should have a seed amnesty when we could hand unused boxes of seed packets into the local police station. (I am only joking). I found it relatively easy to give up cut flowers and pot plants but find completely giving up seeds more difficult. Perhaps the doctor could give me seed patches for the first week, then I could gradually cut down. It is not too bad in summer/winter but gets really bad in the Spring.

£40 squids worth for under £9 on Saturday with son's gf, whilst son was playing footy and prob costing him half that for 90 mins.........................

Its not an addiction !! i dont think 700 variety of seeds is OTT !!
I still have space for any homeless lost or un loved seeds, some have been in my care for many years and many generations of some are still with me ;D
Caring for seeds is rewarding !!

My 11 year old son made Wyvales staff laugh a few weeks ago.
I'd already been down to the store early in the seed sale 50p per packet bonanza and bought a load of seeds for next year, but had to go back to the store to get some more compost a week or so later. I spotted the remaining buckets full of seeds near the exit, and started meandering towards them.....son yells out...."MUM! NO! Step AWAY from the SEED PACKETS! ;D
I felt about 11 yrs old myself, saying "Oh go on, I was just going to have a quick look in case I'd missed anything good...I won't be long.." I was dragged away... ::)

Small confession re the depths of my seed addiction.
I went to Bergerac on holiday in September. I arrived at around 11am, picked up the car from the airport. My first packet of seeds were purchased at 12.47 at LeClerc home/garden store.
My excuse was it was next to LeClerc supermarket where we needed to stock up on essentials. My OH was to say the least bemused. He has pointed out his golfing addiction is much less serious.
Throughout the hols whenever we saw somewhere that looked like it did anything on gardening lines we stopped ..........just for a look ::). I eventually came home with 2kg of different boxes of bean seeds (climbing, dwarf etc), three packets of tomato seeds, 2 packets squash seeds (couldn't find much I didn't have) and some red coloured lettuce which I found I already had a packet of at home.

I'll have you know that my habit is down to 4 (huge) shoe boxes at the moment!!! One of the lids even closes too. And the bag with peas from woolie's sale doesn't count because.... because... oh it just doesn't, okay!
And I've discovered something great - saved garlic & shallots don't count either because they're not seeds.

Ok OK..so I may have a small problem..but I am saving seeds for the environment and to better the world as a whole so that doesn't count does it.. if they are not for me !!!!

All my seeds have been packed in a crate along with other stuff to go to Canada with me,then yesterday I got some very rare seeds, now too late to pack so they are going to travel with me.. I figure they may search my baggage so they are going in my bra.... and before you ask they are small seeds!!!! Is that the sign of an addiction, I always thought it was safe place to pack precious things..it works well for cuttings too!!
Ollie, you are right peas and beans don't count...you could be using them as dry beans for food, same goes for onions, etc.
Anyway, I have not bought 1 thing from all the seed catalogues that are popping up now..mind you I am packing the catalogues!!!

As many of you know I do not have a seed problem but I have been seen carefully putting seeds in little bags for redistribution. Does that make me a pusher?
If home grown garlic cloves, peas and beans do not count then nor should carrot, parsnip, cabbage, et all for similar reasons. My current "must have" list stands at just over £50 which is a tiddly amount working out at less than £1 a week. You can't be an addict if spending less on seed than tea.

My name is Sawfish, and I'm a seedaholic.
Last night I got up in the middle of the night and sneaked on to the internet to look at the Tuckers site etc etc as I was so excited by their seed catalogue. Didn't get to bed till 3.30am
I've been going mad this last month and ordered from 7 different companies. I have over 200 packets of seeds in my seedbox. :-[
Seedaholism is no laughing matter!

Talking of shoe boxes, yesterday at the allotment we cleaned out the hut and my girlfriend forced me to compost about 10 spare shoe boxes I had hidden at the back.
I dont know what was going on in my mind, was I actually thinking that one day I might fill them all with seeds?

I've got about five seed catalogues for next year, and the 'ooh must try that', is extremely difficult to overcome. ;D ;D

It's getting harder to resist :P :.... I am determined to wait until at least March to order my last batch for next year. After all I have worked out you need to wait as late as possible with Parsnip and sweetcorn seeds to have any chance of germination ...
I started with a plan to stick to 2-4 novel things a year and stick to tried and tested for the rest but I am too weak ... the little oddments of herbs, a few different squash varieties .... its the beginning of the end isn't it? :-\
At least I'm still resticting it to 2 biscuit tins .... one for the peas and beans and one for the rest! But now I have started on flowers .... where will it end??

If you have to its better you send off to a reputable seed company, I've known too many peoples lives ruined going to back street seed pushers.
I see them in the plot every day, old men sitting in their huts staring out the window waiting for the next seed hit.

I realised I was beyond help today when I fed the cats this morning and started musing that the box their food comes in would make an ideal portable seed packet box, just cover it with some suitable wrapping paper..........why would I even need such a thing! ;D
Plus I've just bought a few more packets of squash from an eBay supplier, couldn't resist getting some purple spring onions whilst I was at it...I'm a lost cause! :-\

Actually I find the suitcases on wheels are the best place to store seeds,easy to move them from lottie to store or seeds swaps .
We thought about taking our seeds case on the plane with us as checked baggage rather than risk it with Pickfords taking it with the household effects but when we weighed it it was over the limit for checked baggage so we have gradually stuffed the packets antwhere we could as we have been packing.
Every tiny space has been utilised, teapots are stuffed, as are milk jugs, toby jugs, shoes, doll bodies,

Just seen this thread and thought I'd better confess.
Having just got married last month, the early part of this year was spent searching various websites / store for flower seeds as we were growing the flowers for the wedding.
I saw jungleseeds and found some lovely flower seeds, promptly spent £30 on various items, only 2 packets of which were flowers 'for the wedding!'
My Luffa's are coming along nicely...

Really glad I started this thread ;D I have spent most of the last 5 days going through seed sites and written down every thing I would fancy growing and the price ::) (I am ill) but have just totaled up everything on them and I comes to £793 43 :o :o :o so I am really glad I did not just buy them think I will have to be a bit more selective :'( (where I think I am going to grow then I don't know ::))

I think you have got it really, really, bad. You definately need counselling. I feel guilty if I pay 5 packets for £1 at Morrisons. I think you need group seed counselling. But on the other hand if you don't have holidays and just plant seeds a two week holiday abroad would probably cost that, but I do think that is a bit over the top.

Have just found one of those large Ameretti tins - perfect for the bean and pea collection.
OH is out tomorrow night....so I think it will be the grand sorting out of the rest of the collection into the large Quality Street tins ;D

Well I mean - one has to have one set for "harvested", another for "plant by", one for "best before", two sets for veg and flowers by name - ohhhhhhhh :o

Oh heck, I had only got as far as thinking of separating them into different categories - beans, toms etc! Good thing the OH is out every Tuesday evening - by the end of his course the whole seed collection will be and ready to roll in the spring ;D
Then of course I have to give myself time to prepare for Potato Day in Feb!

Gotta keep them on the pooter, I would never find anything if I looked through the packets..be warned you really are addicted when you start buying in bulk..1 pound weight of squash seeds makes a heck of a lot of plants ..but they were a real bargain!! Times this by the number of varieties..oh eck i think I should stop, I am beginning to feel guilty.

"What if none of these things happen but THEY JUST WON'T LET ME HAVE THE SEEDS?"
Well, I'm not going through that again, so I've taken drastic action. My US orders went today. Jungle Seeds tomorrow.
And tonight I shall sleep at last.

my order came from jungle seeds one of the beans I ordered was not available so they put in 2 other types and said that when the ones I have ordered become available they will send me those as well :o :o :o
I will defiantly shop with them again ;D ;D ;D

Baker Creek (USA) do the same - last order I got two free packets of seeds. Just had my order arrive from Bobbys seeds in Germany - also a free packet of seeds.
By the way my seed collection is on excel, is divided into wide alphabetically divided executive files I can segregate varieties. Individual files for roots, leaves and flowers, with fruits as a main file plus two seperate files to hold the beans and squash seeds. I plant by the moon so need seeds divided accordingly.
I also have a masterplan........no not the world domination thingy, that's next week..........but a masterplan showing me what to sow when. This is going to be taken to a new level this winter as I have just done Nick Hamiltons Vegetables all year round course which has set me off on management of varieties to get some crops (like caulis) fresh for 12 months of the year!
Is it okay if I do a maniacal little laugh in the corner now, without anyone dragging me off to a "facility" for my own good.

My U.S. orders arrived safe and well from Pinetrees and Summer Hill.
84 packets of seeds (dribble) - mind you, I only ordered 78 (and it was when we had something called an exchange rate - seems so long ago now)
Robin from Summer Hill added six extra packets free, along with a hand written note of thanks. That's my kind of 'Dealer'!
Jeannine, sadly you've not gone cold turkey - you've just done a fast freeze until you've settled - just wait for that thaw, honey, you'll be awash again!

I have a picnic basket i have my seeds in its great for carrying them around and does not let the moisture collect :)
I have decided not to grow potatoes next year so am going to plant 3 beds of squash instead :) off to look at the baker creek heirloom seed site again there own mixed stir fry veg was great last year.

i cant sleep having laid in bed for 4 hours have given up and got up decided to take over the dining room table and type more information about my seeds onto my spreadsheet whilst listing to doctor who on bbc radio 7 with a large cup of tea. Bliss :)

If you can't sleep you had better count seeds instead of sheep. Don't tell the government but when I get my heating allowance will put my coat on to keep warm indoors and buy 'guess what' seeds. 'Pensioner found dead of cold this winter but surrounded by seed packets'. Does anyone ever find seeds in their handbag or beans in their pocket. Do you carry the basket with you at all times in case it gets interferred with or stolen. I suppose we could collect empty seed packets, especially the ones with pretty pictures, like people used to collect cigarette cards.

i got rid of the lot about 3 weeks ago as i felt it was a bit sad that 1. they were taking up room in my seed boxes and 2. i was thinking of getting a box just for empty packets :-\.

I used to do that, as a record of what I'd grown and also to keep the instructions in case I wanted to grow them again. Then I realised that I was already keeping a record and that if I wanted to grow them again, I'd buy a new packet - complete with instructions. So I've been ruthless - and besides, the space they took up is now free for... more seeds...
I have plenty of willpower, you understand, it's won'tpower I'm short of.

I have just counted how many varieties of veg I have its 197 and that's after removing most of the F1's to go in in the seed swaps :-\ mind you have 237 packets as I have several packets of some of them :o ( beens and peas and such ::) )
oh and that dose not include potato's (which I have not bought yet) or flower seeds on bulbs :-[

We dont usualy cound bulbs and potatoes in SAA :)
My stash is looking at 327 veg seed packets (got another 20-30 packets which are duplicates) and 117 flower packets.
Woops :) i have 2 orders one with baker creak and one with Johnsons but i am not counting these either yet :)

Today I have shamed myself and succumbed to the addiction. And only a week into the New Year, shame on me!
Today's purchases (not including the freebies from Gardener's World) are as follows:
Runner bean - white emergo
Peas - early onward
Beetroot - detroit 2
Broad Bean - Green Windsor (I don't even like broad beans!!!)
Carrot - purple haze
Parsnip - hollow crown
carrot - chanterey red cored 2
Cauliflower - all year round
Swede - invitation (I don't like swede either!)
Broccoli - autumn green calabrese
Leek - autumn giant 3
Lettuce - Little Gem
and Brussel Sprouts - Wellington F1

Forgive me all, its been a while since my last confession.
After the buying trip to France (my hols which somehow converted into a seed buying fest) I lasted for a while and then the new seed catalogues arrived. I seem to have splurged significantly and I am desperately waiting for the postie to try and intercept the parcels before my OH sees them and realises the extent of my addicition, which unfortunately seems to have gone beyond the value of the various gift vouchers he bought from various seed companies for my Christmas pressies.
Do you think I can persuade him that seeds are only 10p a packet nowadays ??? Or should I just go on the attack and point out he fed my addiction with the vouchers and I lost all control when presentd with the online shopping catalogues. :-\

Lying is the way of the real addict.
So it depends on your goal: do you really want to give up on your addiction? Really really???
However, 10 p is too improbable for anyone to believe. Make it 20 p and non-gardeners will be persuaded.
But you should also confront him with his own behaviour. He is feeding your addiction and probably has some interest in keeping you addicted.
Try to figure out what it is. It makes it easier to point out that he is at least an accomplice to your addiction, if not the sole one responsible.
(Can you tell I saw a lot of Dr Phil-shows when I was ill? ;D)

I realised I have a problem when my fella brought me home two EMPTY Roses tins from work - I was really happy as I need a new storage system for my seeds.
I gave him a bottle of chainsaw oil in return, in't crumbly luv great!

Hello , my name is Jean and today, I became a seedaholic. Took myself into town as I needed some washing powder. Went into Wilkies. What a mistake. I did remember to get the soap powder but they had some of their own brand veg seeds at 75% off. I found I was unable to resist! Although I had bought several packets of veg seeds last week, I found myself picking up a packet of each variety. They seemed too cheap to leave on the shelf. After Wilkies I trotted of to B&Q to look at the sheds. You've guessed it. The seed display magnet drew me to the stand. I had to stand and argue with myself that I was being stupid buying more seeds. it took great will power but I did come out without seeds but only cos I have promised myself to return on Wednesday-10% day for over 60's. I must get some new garding gloves that are on offer and some string and perhaps a few more packets of Shh you know what

Jeanbean - as for buying seeds -well so far - Wilkies, last years sale at Thompson and Morgan and at Wyevale, Real Seeds and Premier seeds direct online...... and then of course there are the seed swaps on here ..........and all the seeds in the biscuit tins behind the settee. Not that I am hiding them of course - it just seems the best place to keep them ;D
And as for you, Grannyjanny - I already have a reputation for my wellies down on the lottie :D
Should I just throw caution to the wind and buy more ;D Last years polka dot one caused the most comments ;)

The trouble with Morrisons is that they put the plants near the entrance. I nearly bought some raspberry canes, but thought I already had them at the allotment, but spotted some Lily of the Valley and other bulbs but was very good and walked past. The seeds are not in there yet so didn't buy anything apart from food. I might just take a quick trip to B & Q or Homebase tomorrow not to buy, of course, but just to look at the seeds, bulbs, or even dead plants that are reduced and need a bit of loving care.

Well......how come despite giving up my lottie and being relegated to teeny plot at my mums probably an eighth of the size, I'm still buying more seeds???!!!!! It's getting silly now - I don't have room to plant them!!!! Somebody save me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Ok, ok. My names steve and i have a seed problem. I thought i could stop when i wanted. It started with a few of us on site ordering the odd packet now and then, that was fine. Now i sneak them into the shed in the early hours or after dark. I even get my seed catalogues delivered in plain brown rapping and stash them under my bed, then bring them out when the house is empty and have a good read. I'm going cold turkey next year, cancelling all catalogues. If i'm seen laying on the plot shaking, with dribble at the corners of my mouth, you know whats happened.

Ohh now that is interesting, Saddad. I do have 'the works' in the next town to me and I'm going in next weekend. Thought it was just books.
