Find 'The Gardner' in members and visit his website!  Extremely informative and useful for all of us!

Best of luck

Well you are helpfull lot of lotties arent you. Someone comes here in good faith asking for help, and all you do is say hello and pass the buck!  ;)

seriously though i think we could use a bit more info Greengreen, so we can help you. Like state of plot, type of crops you'd like to grow things like that.

P.S. Welcome to the site.

Welcome greengreen, to the madhouse!   ;D

Where to start, well, what sort of state is your plot in?  Mine was covered in weeds, so I started at the begining and gradually over a couple of months, cleared and dug the plot.  Then the old man built me a rather impressive compost bin out of pallets.  I have some garlics and onions in, ooo and broad beans, and a good pal sent me some rhubarb which is already poking its nose out of the ground!

I guess with spring just around the corner, if you have to clear the ground, the clear beds and prepare for planting.  Check out the seed catalogues and decide what you wanna grow.  Sort yourself out a composter, shed maybe, and mini bar  ;D, and buy a large bottle of radox so you can relax those muscles after a long hard day digging!

Good luck greengreen, it is all downhill now!   ::)

Welcome green. Veggie beds: Are you sure you want to grow grass in between?

I have divided my veggie plot into four sections with permanently packed down earth paths. In each quarter, I make new beds every year with narrow stomped down earth paths in between them. When I make a bed, I hunker down, reach over and stick a stick in, then I go to the other side and make it as wide as to where I can reach the stick, then I stomp another pathway as wide as my shoe size. This way you can always reach the weeds and crops in the veggie bed.

In winter I dig over each quarter over completely, including the annual, narrow paths between the beds, in each quarter.

No grass seeds, no mowing, no edgeing. Personally, I like the rustic look of earth paths, especially in summer when they get baked and cracked. They do tend to get slippery when wet tho'.

Two thirds of the allotment is flower garden, jampacked full of flowery stuff and lots of paths, some of which don't go anywhere. The paths make for surprises and to be able to get to things for weeding, cutting flowers and just ambling and looking. I just love the terrace in the flower garden that borders on one side on the veggie garden. Sitting there, surrounded by the wild flower garden and at times enjoy looking over the tidy rows of veggies, watching the food grow hahaha. Love the contrast.

Will we see you tomorrow evening at the big allotment quiz in the chat room? It's just for fun. See the thread in the shed. Hope to see you there. -ina

Yes, RF, but we pass the buck to the right people!  Greengreen, bear with us, think you will get to enjoy it!  Certainly, lots of good info here if you want it!
