Title: Stopping tomatoes at 4 trusses.
Post by: meg_gordon on July 22, 2008, 08:47:37
Good morning folks

A wee bit of advice please.  My greenhouse is new this year - it was delivered and built mid June - and I filled it with a mixture of bought tomato plants - mainly Ailsa Craig but a Gardiner's Delight, an Alicante and a couple of orange and plum varieties.  Because I was late in potting these on, I was wondering if I should stop them at 4 trusses to allow the ones already on the plant to ripen?  I am on the west coast of Scotland and our growing season is about 2 or 3 weeks less than those in the South East.  Any ideas?

Meg

I would think that would work.

I live in Stirling and have stopped my outside ones to 2-3 trusses just to make sure.

The ones in the greenhouse have hit the roof but I did start early. ;)

Sungolds, Gardeners Delight red and yellow tumblers in hanging baskets, 14" ones.

Sungolds are doing really well  :)

Red tumblers even better, had a few ripe ones already

Sorry about delay replying - changed my ISP and took a day or two to iron out all the wrinkles.  I have four trusses on all 9 of my tom plants.  I have Orange Pixie, Gard. delight, a super sweet and the rest Ailsa Craig.  Got lots of small and a few middle sized green toms, not even a blush on one yet.

Will def try next year.  I have a South West facing garden, so we do get the sun most of the day - well, whenever the sun appears:-)

Your maybes a little behind then. I'd stop one at 4 and leave the rest to 5or 6. Fingers crossed we might get another Indian summer.
