-
blimey :o
mine are more knee high to a grasshopper - grasshopper being the operative word in size ;D
-
Good grief! Are you giving them steroids or something?! Mine aren't even half that size! Well done though ;D
-
I must stop looking at threads referring to tomato plants, I am getting really depressed ;D My few Gardeners Delight and Marmande seem to have been at a standstill for ages!!
-
You've got a sideshoot on that Marmande, Tony?
When did you sow?
-
March 1st,heated propagator, watered with seaweed solution. pricked out on 7th march!! pottted on again april 9th. (I keep a plant diary). Rgds Tony.
note: 1st 3 inside door treated with trichoderma as an experiment, seems impressive so far!
-
Those are excellent looking tomatoes.
Where do you get the fungus treatment from? I would be very interested in using some of that.
-
managed to get a kinder egg thing full from a commercial tomato grower on a college trip! ;D
-
that's very lucky. i was having a look on the web at how much to buy this stuff and Wow it is not cheap.
Company in America. don't know if they ship to the UK
http://jrjohnson.com/product.php?productid=16550
and a shop on Ebay,

not cheap at 10 grams for a tenner plus postage
It does look good stuff though, from your results.
-
Glad you're doing a control, Tony.
-
it's the only way to tell if your experiment works! and then repeat it next year........
-
What, with different plants and weather conditions and compost and timing?
Don't think so!
-
how do you think new varieties, foods, methods, etc are developed, then??
-
Under laboratory conditions Tony where else?
Where everything can be monitored, verified and repeated.
-
this mornings update[attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3]all gardeners delight,[attachment=4]and some marmande
-
careful the ds dont raid you !!!
-
who are the ds? are they some sort of tomato experts?
-
I'll be lucky if I get any, given my earlier post.
-
I don't BELIEVE IT a couple of weeks ago i accidently cut the stalk of one of my tomato's, just left it and continued watering, it went on growing and has started flowering, will put on photo's of cut and top of plant. Shirley B[attachment=1][attachment=2]
-
I'm picking this one in the morning! first of the 'gardeners delight'[attachment=1] ;D ;D
-
Nice one Tonybloke how did it taste
All mine are outside in my garden only flowers so far but lots of them so i hope I'll get some nice ones they are "allacanty" if that's how you spell it?
The wind last night broke one of the tomato plants. Never mind it all makes good compost for next years tomatoes. ;D
-
As long as you have some stem and a leaf it will regrow if you let it...... Alicante ;D
-
Don't be disappointed if it's not exquisite - quite often, at least 1 in 3 is bland, especially if they have been growing fast.
-
Absolutely Yummy!! Gardeners Delight by name..... ;D ;D ;D ;)
-
Trusses set on Piccolo and Black Russian-others well on their way.
Geting injured had a sort of silver lining-instead of having everywhere crowded out with plants for sale I had room to plant out for me,instead of having to wait until I had cleared stock.
Only about 100 more varieties to try and then I think I will draw up my final list of toms to grow
I somehow think MM will not be in the top 10 ;D
-
My Sungolds are doing really well as usual. The Sweet 100 are an odd shape, oval????
Jelly Bean now setting well and Shirly looking good!
-
tigerella ripening up as we speak, supersteak putting on weight and the plums look great so far ;D
-
My Galina are going mad in the greenhouse. A few weeks ago I was thinking that they were a bit pathetic for an extra early variety - they were only at the same stage as the tigerella and black cherry, ie just flowering, but now they've all got three or four trusses of fruit already set and are seven foot tall. And they've only been fed once!
Somebody remind me what triffids look like? Anything like potato leaved yellow cherry tomatoes?
-
A few weeks ago I saw a post on a website about taking cuttings from tomatoes. I thought I would give it a try, so I carefully cut out the shoots between the stem and a leaf and planted them as cuttings in pots. I now have several Shirley F1 hybrid plants extra to the small number of seeds in the packet.

Well done!
Hi, Tim.
Yes, I think that was it, thanks for the idea, I would never have thought of that.
I put this on a par with a development about 50 years ago when a Forester tried grafting the top of a mature cedar tree onto a rootstock, it worked and they were able to pick seed cones standing on the ground instead of climbing around 100ft up a tree.

todays update
Marmande nearly ready[attachment=1][attachment=2]
Gardeners Delight
[attachment=3][attachment=4][attachment=5][attachment=6][attachment=7]

-
Oh, for God's sake, Tony!!!
But way behind the great gardener??
-
yeah right!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
just for you, Tim!![attachment=1] ;)
-
Mean!!
-
I'm leaving them in the greenhouse at the 'lottie' to see what happens, haven't watered since mid september, still fruiting!! I only open the greenhouse once per week, just for picking of fruit. who knows, may still pick for xmas!! ;)
-
I am still getting some ripe fruit, I also have not watered for ages which is something I haven't tried before, but seems to work well! The stems are going brown now on some plants, but they are keeping going.....
-
No water? 'twould be the same if picked & indoors??
-
I grow in soil, and the green house footings are shallow on the sides (deep on corners) it's dry in the greenhouse, but the foraging roots are probably getting some water from outside ?
-
Mine are in growbags with large pots on top, so they can't get water from anywhere......just picked another quarter carrier bags full, looks like I will get a few more but not many...not up until Christmas!
-
just picked these.[attachment=1]
gardeners delight and marmande. we're allegedly due some snow today/tomorrow, so that might put an end to them, but who knows........ ;)

Just getting in on this thread from last Spring ::)
Tony, do you use a diluted seaweed solution or full strength? I've never used it but just ordered some as can't seem to find it in stores.
Also, why restrict the watering of tomatoes- is that just a winter thing? and why, please?
-
Also, why restrict the watering of tomatoes- is that just a winter thing? and why, please?
It is an end of season thing, to get the last fruits to ripen without shrivelling. Plus it saves on space, having to find somewhere indoors to put them all whilst they are ripening! It's the first year I've done this, and it has kept the plants going for much longer than usual, I'm not sure why but it seems to work!

Well! I didn't know that! :-[ Assuming my plants don't get blighted next season, I'll certainly be doing this. Thanks 8)
-
I picked up this stategy from an organic veg box scheme supplier in norfolk. At the first sign of blight in his polytunnel, he removes any infected material and stops watering, this dries the atmosphere in the g/house/tunnel and the plants seem to do o.k. for a few more months!!
;)
-
Grannie Annie, I use seaweed at recommended dilution rates. ;)
-
OH as just about fininshed the last of the black cherry that have been ripening in the house.... they wouldn't have lasted that long except I've been brred from eating them, and lots of other stuff for about two months now!
:-X
