Title: i've run out of potato space
Post by: David R on April 14, 2008, 15:34:35
planted the last of my spuds in the back garden, and i have about 12 chitted pentland crown left over as i have nowhere else in the ground to put them. Any ideas for what to do with them as i dont really want to throw them away?

closer spacing of seed potatoes might help.

thanks ttg, pretty closely spaced as they are - i planted a bag of "cara" potatoes and half a bag of pentland in about 20 square yards. Manics, that sounds like a good idea, you have me thinking now about those multi coloured laundry bags, i might have one or two in the garage.

When I run out of other containers I turn a compost bag inside out (they have black insides) and use them - having put holes in the bottom.  Just roll the sides down to begin with and then roll them up as you earth up the haulms.

Or you could give them away - I don't eat all that many spuds so freecycled my leftover chitted Red Duke of York. It's nice to think my spuds will be growing in all these other gardens!

Any container which is large enough will grow spuds.

One trick is to use the compost bin and collect them from the base bit, usually used to get the compost from. Instead of digging them out

Old dustbins big buckets, even large plastic waste disposal bags filled with soil of course, two together to add strength, just make sure of the water level by punching some holes around, so that too much will run off.

Got any elderly neighbours who find their garden is too big for them to manage, they may be only too pleased to swap a patch for a share of the fresh veg you grow on it.
