Title: Germinating chillis & lovage
Post by: killerflies on March 22, 2008, 18:35:03
Just a quick one if you dont mind........

Ive just put the following into soil for germination;

Long red marconi,
Habanero hot wax,
Tomatillo,
Lovage,

All are in their own supermarket veg trays and on a wine heating plate (not sure of temp).

Should I put each of my trays into plastic bags in order to keep in heat and moisture, if so, what about oxygen?

Thanks a million!!

I would put them in bags until they have all come up.

A wine heating plate (used for fermenting wine) should be ok, if not a tad too warm.
Does it have a thermostat? If so, set to about 25C.

Put a thermometer in the soil to test it, if it is too hot, move the trays above the heater.
Or put them in your airing cupboard instead.

Great stuff!

Thanks for that. Ive put them all in bags and checked the soil temp. It was 33oC  :o so I put the trays on 10mm stilts and will re-check the soil temp again this evening.

Its all gone into the diary so Ill let you know how it goes in the end.

Beir bua!

Checked the temp again today with the trays on 1cm stilts and the temp was 40oC  :o :o :o

Perhaps its my thermometer but I dont think that that is wrong.

Hope I didnt bake them!
