Nitro chalk is a quick acting granular fertiliser that adds lime & nitrogen to the soil and should be spread at 1oz/sy in spring & early summer.

If you can't obtain nitro chalk, sulphate of ammonia is a good alternative at 2oz/sy.

I hope that answers your query.

If I am not mistaken you can use nitro chalk as a fertilizer boost for your winter onions in April.
