Post by: flowerlady on January 21, 2008, 12:13:53
Had awful year last year with them, small, hard and bitter!

I have tried Detroit, Perfect3, Cylindra - but still keep coming back to Boltardy as the one that gives the most relaible and tastiest results. I got a good crop from seed that I first bought in 2003 from Boltardy last year.

I like 'Golden' ,seems a little sweeter and' Bulls blood 'mainly for the leaves
I start them off in pots then plant out.

The only ones that I have ever grown successfully was Boltardy and Detroit - Detroit tasted better but both were good.

I grew a small number of Boltardy and Detroit last year, and both were very tasty. I've bought some Burpees Golden Globe and Blankoma to try as well this year – they're both supposed to be sweeter that the red varieties.

we grew solo, cylindra and boltardy, the solo were quite easy to grow as they are single seeds and grow quite quickly..tasted nice but so did most of them  :)

Grew Boltardy and Cylindra last year, both gave sufficient yields but for me the latter had the better flavour and also a handy shape for slicing of course!

We grew Sanguina from Real Seeds last year, and were astounded at the germination success rate compared to Detroit/Boltardy etc in previous years
Pulled every other one small and let the others grow on - they stayed tender and sweet even when tennis ball sized in October
Have already ordered them again for this year !   8)

Oh, once again, Golden every day!  No staining of food or your wearwithall, & sweet.

But for red, Cylindra did exceptionally well this (first) year.

And think about mono-germ seed?

My favourite is Chioggia, but best not boiled or it will loose all it's colour. Even the mice know it is the best tasting beetroot, as they go for it before the red ones!!

Same here. Though I had a poor crop last year I put it down to moving plots. At my last plot some of the boltardy grew to the size of small swede!

I've successfully grown Boltardy for years. Last season I decided to try Egyptian Beetroot in addition to Boltardy. This did well too. It has an earthier taste.

Thank you all for your imput ... definitely food for thought!

What is the difference do you think between Detroit 2 and Detrit 6 ???  :-\

If you grow Chioggia amd don't cook them I assume salads is your only option ???  Grated ????  waifer thin slices ???

Never grown a Golden Beetroot ... sort of strange concept!!  ::) ;D But always open to the suggestion of something new  ;D ;)

I'll post a vote for Wodan. It'snot the most widely available one & is an F1 so not for everyone, but i loved the taste baked & they lasted in the ground well into December.  I grew them both in clay and in compost in tubs in the back yard.

Cheers

Hi all,
I conducted a very un scientific trial in 2006, using 6 different varieties, Pablo (not mentioned here) was easily the best performer on my sandy soil. They were very tasty, & grew to a uniform size, bigger than a golf ball smaller than a tennis ball.

When is the best time to plan the beetroot as we have tons of frost here at the moment.  I am planning to plant them in a cold greenhouse and then replant into the allotment.
