Title: Mexican Hat Plant.
Post by: telboy on November 17, 2007, 13:48:18
I'm wondering how long before it flowers. I usually discard the main plant every year & bring on a couple of the 'babies'. I've been doing this for 25 yrs..  :-[ (I know it's sad).
I thought I'd leave this one, but the top is nearly touching the ceiling and is held up by the blinds. It's about a year old now.

Do they actually flower? Only saying that as flowers are the way of multiplying normally. Because these plants produces 'babies' there may be no need for it to flower.

Its only a thought........I may be wrong, I have only seen them not grown one ;)

Star,
As I understand it, the flowers can be Pink, Magenta or Orange. After a google, the height can be up to 48'', so I'll hang on as it's 45''.

Hi there,

If you should get any seeds  ;) I have some too and they've flowered.....but I think the lack of pollinators this time of year doesnt help.....was really looking forward to growing some from seed too!!!!

You know what to do...lol.....get on your step ladder and pollinate them!! I have other bryophyllums if you'd like to swap?

It seems to have started to flower, you may be able to see two pinkish flowers. Flower stems are also growing from the leaf axils.
I'll post another pic. if there's a show! :)

Sorry about the pic. quality but it gives an idea of the flowers.
Not exciting I know, but it's the first time I've seen it so it was worth the 12 month wait.
I'm gonna start one of the 'babies' now & ditch mother.

Well if I hadnt seen it, Id never have believed it.

Its actually quite pretty in a scrunched kind of way (head hitting ceiling thing going on). Thanks for the pic Telboy. Its probably best to bring on a young 'un now. Mother plant will most likely die after flowering anyhoo ;)

Thank you for the introduction to Mex. Hat.  We use that term for something like a very short cone flower with few petals.
