Title: Hazel rods - good source?

Hi All,

I've been re-reading the "Jewel Garden" and am inspired by Monty's beautiful hazel plant supports. Does anyone know of a good supplier of hazel rods in the Surrey area? I want to make sweetpea wigwams and some arches. I know I could use bamboo but hazel looks nicer!

I have found one supplier "naturalfencing.com", but wondered if anyone knew of any others?

Not heard of them before (although they are only a few miles from me), so don't know what they are like, or prices etc..

You could approach your local woodland trust, they have volunteer days in early spring. Let them know you would like some hazel and they may say you can have what you cut.

The advantage of these volunteer days is you have company, a good fire and giving something back in return for your hazel.....and you can choose size that suits your needs.

Thanks Star, I may well do that.

Would have to see if I could fit it in round work, but it sounds like a good day out and just the kind of thing I like. Will start to make enquiries.

you can use willow as well - I do and I grow my own to use as Monty does with hazel, also use them as pea sticks, other small walls around the garden and for decorative purposes as well

Hi where in Surrey? I work in Surrey on a private estate (as a Forester), and may find contracters you could buy them from.

Both my allotment sites have hazel hedges and overgrown coppice edging them. I suppose yours doesn't, or you could cut your own? I cut lots, and it's amzing how quickly new rods grow up again.

My new lottie also has hazel on my plot! Only about 5' tall as yet but its great. I also planted 2 hazel whips at home this spring ;)

I know someone local to Cambridge that does them very cheap. Also pea sticks and bean poles etc. Sadly this year my tomatoes were totally outclassed by their stakes...
