Andy, I think they are the seed heads of the wild arum aka Lords and Ladies, (arum maculatum.

Definitely Arum maculatum. (Lords and Ladies) Has shiny dark green black speckled leaves, then poisonous berries - green first then orange. Have quite a few in my garden.

why get rid of it? It's one of the nicest wild flowers. The italian species has attractive markings on the leaf, which cuckoo-pint lacks.
you can make flour out of the roots, called Portland Sago, tho that probably just shows how desperate people were for food in the past

Arum italicum it is then.  Dont really want it. have dug out the leaves many times but it comes back. would rather other things in the space.

Thanks for help, it can stay there for now as too much to do down allotment today!!! weeds and more weeds :-\
