Londoners! ;D
-
My Great Grandfather had a plot in Finchley ,they were(are?) called 'The rough lots' I Google Earthed Finchley and what alot of plots/sites hoping to pin point it one day.
-
Mine's in Eltham, SE London - just up the road from New Eltham station, and about 4 miles from my house (nearest site I could find with a vacancy - didn't take me long to realise why...).
Cheers,
Rob ;)
-
Mine's in Royal Eltham ;D SE London.
robkb I guess you are in Coldharbour?

Just down the road then, sort of. Hello neighbour!
So, any other Londoners with allotments or are we the only two?
Cheers,
Rob ;)

Forster Road Beckenham
not to far from Eltham
-
I'm in Barnes - Southwest London
-
I'm in North-west London about a mile from Brent Cross shopping centre. Currently in the process of clearing a third plot which should come into production next spring. This will give me a total of 15 poles and possibly enough space to grow some potatoes. Anyone passing is welcome to visit but the tea facilities will not come on stream until autumn/winter.
-
New Cross - South East London
-
Putney Vale - Site borders Wimbledon Common but the wombles refuse to help with the weeding.... :(
-
I'm in Wimbledon, across from where the Wimbledon footballstadium was (now a building site for mammoth blocks of flats)
it's a site where they had railway sidings and some people dig up sleepers and lots of ballast from their plots. Also a lot of bombs landed nearby and I'm always digging up bomb-damaged bits of house, like broken plates and cups with slag melted onto them.
what are your plots like?
-
Hi all,
We are not that far from Pigeonseed - over at Martin Way, near Raynes Park.
It was a site from the 1930s when the surrounding houses were built. The site is actually split either side of Martin Way, a busy road.
I've put a pin in my plot on the member map.

-
Hi OC and Pigeonseed,
not too far from ya both, Tolworth ( Raeburn Ave ). Ours is not as exciting as your debris stories. We are on a small streams flood plain ( topical ! ). :-)
Pin is in the map I think - yeap just checked.
regards
riffster...
-
Hi Riffster,
I know the Hogsmill well, it always has been delicately scented around there!
If you really zoom in on the "satellite" (they are actually air photos) you can place the pin to plot accuracy. The photos were taken in April/May 2006 for our part of London based on my guesswork.
Regards
OC
-
OC,
I've placed the pin in exactly the right plot now. I hadn't previously for two reasons.
The Sat pic was taken before 1st Apr this year. The date I got the plot. - so it may seem to you that I had done nothing :-)
2nd reason. I didn't want my plot exactly specified. I'll move the pin tomorrow again so the position is vague - Young yobs etc..... ( me being paranoid etc... )
regards
Riffster :-)
-
OC,
There jealous now. You've got nice fancy paths over your lottie :-)
-
Right on the NW fringe of London - the countryside proper starts two lanes behind our house and we've still got a farm on our road (not working properly any more, alas).
I've put the pin on my plot. If you zoom in you can count the grapes & loganberries!
Anyone in the area fancy joining us? I'm plot secretary and I'm working my way through the waiting list....
-
Hi all,
We are not that far from Pigeonseed - over at Martin Way, near Raynes Park.
OC
I know that site I live very close - I went to see a few plots there when I moved here but they were in such bad condition I kept my old plot.
Some of them were just covered in trees - brambles I can handle, trees are too much! It's such a shame, it is a nice secluded haven among all the traffic and houses.
-
Hi Pigeonseed,
Yes, there are over 250 plots and some had fallen into incredible disrepair. The air photo comparison between 2003 and 2006 is dramatice though as some of the new plot holders have gone to huge lengths to remove what I can only describe as saplings!
We are organising plot tours in September. I'll post details nearer the time.
Hi Riffster,
Yes we get a ready supply of wood chip from local tree surgeons and the photo was taken in the very dry spell in 2006. Although I really have the OH to thank!
OC

That's good news - I'm glad to know they're on the up
-
Bringing this up to the top of the board ;D
-
Hi fellow Londoners, I'm in Enfield on the outskirts of North London. We are situated next to a park and a cemetery. ;D ;D ;D
-
That will be the dead centre of Enfield yes? ;D
-
The waiting list is that long Eristic people are dieing to get in here. ;D ;D ;D
-
Park Road in Isleworth - anyone else in Isleworth, Hounslow or Twickenham??
-
Hi, I lived in Isleworth from 1970 - 1985. Happy days!! Went to The Blue School and then The Green School. Didn't take much notice of lotties back then though!!
-
Wimbledon, on the Gap Road site next door to the cemetery, very close to pigeonseed. Not that she's in the cemetey of course! We have 2 allotments having got the first one about 20 years ago now which is a bit of a scary thought.
-
East Acton - although I prefer to think of it as Shepherd's Bush borders. We are on the Bromyard Avenue site, which is just off the Uxbridge Road (and if you know that part of town, the site is in the car park of the Virgin Active health club... only 15 plots!).
-
Hi Weed-digga
My youngest son is still at the Blue School in Year 6 - off the Orleans next year.
-
Sunny Walthamstow.
-
I help my daughter with her new plot in Greenwich, alongside the railway into Maze Hill station and its platforms. It's a small site with water and a row of sheds, and I am very surprised at how run down the plots are. All we've done so far is strim down the weeds twice and dig some rough little beds out of the grass, and it already looks better than many of the others.
-
hi all
my plot is middlesex hayesend
-
Hi JD and welcome to the forum, Walthamstows not that far away mind you I only know the dog track. ;D ;D ;D
-
Forster Road Beckenham
not to far from Eltham
My grandmother lived in Beckenham for a while.
My dad had a plot at the Bromley (or was it Bickley) Lido. Fond memories of swimming there then going onto the plot for soft fruit refreshments (currants and raspberries). When the Lido went private, we'd go swimming at the pool Beckenham and then onto Gran's for tea.
-
Just to add another Londoner - St james Road here - SE16 Southwark/Bermondsey.
Nicely situtated by a busy road!
-
Abbeywood, South East London, about 5 miles from where we live. A bit of a drive, but worth it.
-
Well if we are talking INSIDE the M25 ??? Then I'm in here too ;D about a 'spit' away from J19 ::) ;D

Hi Trevor_D, we're almost neighbours, I'm in Rayners Lane! Newton Park West site. :)
-
Might see you in your trading hut one Sunday morning, then! As we haven't got one ourselves, quite a few of our plotholders are members of Newton Park.

Hold on a minute... you're not the Trevor I know, with the amazing ears and rides a bike? :)
-
Not guilty - haven't ridden a bike since I was a teenager. (But I think I've met the other guy in your hut.)
-
Ah, ok, sorry! Yes, there's another Trevor, very nice guy too. Maybe see you down there too one day!
-
What a great place to have an allotment :)
-

Yes Barnowl, we're pretty lucky where we are. There are downsides though - when the wall that seperates us from the park blew down last year, we had some unwelcome visitors. Have you ever seen the havoc a herd of deer can wreak??
-
That must have been chaotic... venison stew anyone?
-
East Finchley. There are about 180 plots on the site, a couple of streams (lots of frogs), woods behind, another allotment site (the Fuel Lands) next to that and Marylebone Cemetery next to that. So we are part of a huge "lung" in the mioddle of a heavily built up area. Fantastic! ;)
-
Hi All
I'm in North London - Barnet and my plot is in the Clifford Road Allotments
Sam

Ceres
Royal Paddocks - is that the allotments next to Hampton Open air pool??
-
Royal Paddocks - is that the allotments next to Hampton Open air pool??
No - I know the ones you mean but we're the Kingston side of Bushy Park. We're back to back with the Hampton Wick Royal Cricket Club. Our entrance is on Park Road, Teddington.
-
Another vote for Barnet here - Hospital Fields Allotments in Cricklewood, near Brent Cross shopping centre (that's why I've been saying my plot's in Brent for the last three years - d'oh!)
;D

I wonder if your great grandfather's plot was on the Fuel Lands, next to Marylebone Cemetery on East Finchley High Road? I've a feeling they used to be called the rough lots. There is another site next to the Fuel Lands called East Finchley allotments (my site).
-
Hi Paul Long I will ask my mum, she remembers a cemetery and we tried to find it on google earth she was trying to find a swimming pool that was close but now you have a name Fuel Lands that might mean something.Cheers for the info.

Sounds promising. A popular open air swimming pool (Finchley Lido) was just over the North Circular from Marylebone Cemetery and the Fuel Lands. There is still a swimming pool there, but not open air any more, and most of the site is taken up by a cinema complex, bowling alley and fast food joints.
-
Evening Paul ,mum,me and google have found the plots they are the next lot north of you so yes just over the north circular. I think(?) a chap has written a book about Barnet allotments must have a look.
Cheers.

You may already know by now that the Rough Lots are another name for the Glebe Lands. The site is now occupied by the Wingate and Finchley Foootball Club off Summers Lane. Here is a link: http://www.barnet.gov.uk/index/leisure-culture/libraries/archives/archives-histories/archives-finchleyhistories/archives-finchley-woodhouse.htm

Morning Paul
Many thanks for the link ,kind of you to take the time.I would like to think three generations on he would be pleased we are still at it.
Thanks again.
-
Our allotment association (East Finchley) has closed its waiting list until 2010. Demand has mushroomed. There is now a real shortage of plots in this part of London. What about elsewhere in London?
-
Here in S W London, the council closed the waiting list for their sites (24 I think) around 9 months ago. We didn't, so unsurprisingly our waiting list continues to grow being the only site in the borough still taking names.
The council is conducting a review of its allotment provision. There is no money for new sites they say so they have been looking at restricting plots to borough residents, splitting plots up, preventing people with gardens getting an allotment etc. etc.

Mine's in Birchin Grove, inside the Welsh Harp Wildlife Centre. It's a big site and a beautiful one. Soil is heavy clay though, and even though I swopped plots a couple of years ago, I'm still battling to clear all the bindweed/couch grass/cinquefoil left behind by the previous tenant who didn't believe in weeding. Good soil, though, very fertile.
