I'm so sorry to hear about what is happening "down south". On the radio they were saying that same places are covered with up to 8 feet of water. :o :o

It must be totally devastating. Lotties are bad enough but for so many folk it's their homes. But they still keep building on flood plains as though it wasn't an issue.

Second flood this year on my plot. First one was three feet deep, this time is only about a foot, so I should be grateful I guess.

I saw cars on Friday under water up to their tops, a sight I never thought I would see in East Sussex! Poor commuters when they get off the train and open the door! :(
My plot is not flooded, but VERY wet.
OldMan, I feel for you an the others that are flooded.

Water hasn't gone down since Saturday at 2pm when it reached it's peak.  Churn still flowing too high.  Sewage starting to back up as the drains can't cope any more.

Left London 13:00 Friday, got home 12:30 Saturday and found my 1 week old (brand spanking new) shed has decided to migrate across the site!

Found an old girl at our site in floods of tears as her allotment is trashed again.

Why am I moaning when the poor buggers in Hull and Tewkesbury are suffering?

Lost the battle for the sub-station at 02:30.  If you don't reply to this I will assume that you are without power.

My wonderful woman is up and down the street asking if the old 'uns are OK.  Unfortuneatly the 4x4 brigade have bought all the friggin' bottled water for their holiday homes before they buggered off back to London!

It is all so sad, people losing their entire crops that they have worked so hard on. Even worse poor people who's houses are flooded. May you soon see a light at the end of the tunnel. Watching the news last night I was so amazed at the positive attitude of people who are in the midst of all the chaos.
Please stay safe people.

Water draining off now into the Severn one way and down the Thames on the other.  Some poor sod is going to cop it when this lot gets to where it's going.

Good luck South East - on it's way.

Emmy the news in the States is quite parochial. They tend to focus on American news. Europe only occasionally gets a mention.

The Motley Fool website had some advice for victims of floods today some of which I thought was quite useful:http://www.fool.co.uk/news/your-money/insurance/2007/07/23/when-trouble-comes-flooding-in.aspx?source=ioowftxt0010011 (http://www.fool.co.uk/news/your-money/insurance/2007/07/23/when-trouble-comes-flooding-in.aspx?source=ioowftxt0010011)

Best of luck down there.

Serious piece of advice.  If you get your hands wet YOU MUST CLEAN THEM.  If not and you're unlucky you get a bad tummy, if you're really unlucky you get Weill's Desease which can be fatal.  If you've lost your water supply get some baby wipes, alcohol gel or similar.  In all seriousness we've had bad tummies and suspected Weill's up here in Hull.

Keep safe

I just need to tell you that I have had  e mails from the US and Canada from a great many friends who DID see the news of flooding in their press and they were very informed.

We are on an International prayer chain that originates in the US that did not by the way start with anyone in the UK.

I have had 8 personal friends who have had a whip around in their own area and send to the Hull Flood Fund .

Just thought you may like to know this.

Yes, very close friends but the point was they had in their own areas heard of the flooding in their media so obviously US and Canada do print news from the UK XX Jeannine

The Kingdom of the Pig is the old nickname for Wiltshire really, my birthplace but i live in Gloucestershire now - Cirencester.

Why on earth would it make the American news?  They have weather which kills dozens of people every year, a few big puddles won't be on their radar (nor will our troops!)

It is on the French news every hour, German news etc.  British stylie - don't make a fuss!

I hope that I haven't given the wrong impression; loads of da peeps are much worse off than us.

Your good wishes have put a definite spring in our steps though  ;D

It should make their news because it is a blimmin' serious disaster. As it now has made it I will zip up. I was just shocked that when I replied to my friends e-mail (North Carolina) with the comment "I don't know if I'll be able to get the girls up to my mum's with what's going on" he said "Huh? What is going on?" That was Friday. I sent him a link to BBC news. He was amazed that he'd heard nothing about it, especially when he saw the aerial photos and how serious it is.

we have started to see the first preperation of flood defences in out area as there sandbagging st neots ( 10ish miles away ) so i am sure i will not be affected.

That said its blowing a gale over here and the rain has chased me away from the plot.

You really are much in my thoughts, enough is enough, no one else needs to go through this. .

I have been trying to figure out which is worse,

a) getting the floods the first time when you really don't know what to expect,

b) the second time when you know how bad it can be.

c) watching a different area that are expecting it and willing it to stop

d) feeling guilty  because some folks have had it worse.

I couldn't decide.

Good Luck to all of you,  XXXX Jeannine

Title: Re: Flood
Post by: Oldmanofthewoods on July 26, 2007, 14:34:03
Too sad, back to topic.

I am going to have to think about what to do long term on the allottment, I can't have her flooding again like that.  My raised beds are 10" high with 2" under the soil level.  I suppose that 12" above ground would be a significant improvement but the cost of the timber would be horrendous.  Just what is Plan B I wonder?

Title: Re: Flood
Post by: grawrc on July 26, 2007, 15:57:00
I don't bother with timber edging. it doesn't look so pretty but it does the job. I suppose it depends what type of soil you have too. Clearly we are all going to have to be inventive if we are ro expect floods recurring regularly. perhaps take advice from the Dutch..
Title: Re: Flood
Post by: SnooziSuzi on July 26, 2007, 22:47:57
OldMan,  have you tried evilBay for timber?

I've been on recently as I'm going to build some timber beds and a lot of suppliers are reasonable in their pricing in your area but won't deliver this far north :(

You may find a bargain on there!
Title: Re: Flood
Post by: Oldmanofthewoods on July 27, 2007, 08:58:20
Won't deliver that far North?  What a shame.  I have a fellow allotment holder who part owns a sawmill so i always get my timber at very reasonable rates, but my allotment is 60' x 20 which means 8 beds 4'x20' plus fruit cage - an awful lot of timber!  Any other ideas are welcome.

I am sure that if you could organise a large order he will take a day out and deliver.  For forms sake, I suppose I would have to send you his name and number away from this site.  I will send it via Dan.  If you would like to pass his name and number on please say so and route the request through Dan.

I had some black plastic sheeting down when I got flooded.  After the water subsided I tried to dry the plastic up to put it away.  Under the plastic (keeping dry) were bank voles that have been flooded out of their burrows on the Churn!

Marvellous little rascals!  Unfortunately, I have had to put the plastic back as otherwise they will be homeless!
