Title: Your top 3 tomatoes
Post by: Biscombe on July 13, 2007, 14:55:26: OK Not been at this gardening lark for long, but the biggest thrill is tasting new tomatoes with zillions of varieties to choose from and impossible to grow them all, my fave's so far are

1. Cherokee Green
2. Sungold
3. Black Cherry

Till now my favourites,but i have to taste a lot of new russian ones.they are resistant against early blight or i am lucky sofar.

I can't put them in order as they serve different needs.

SUNGOLD is my favourite cherry without a doubt.

BIG BEEF,PAUL ROBESON and KELLOG'S BREAKFAST jointly share being my favourite large ones (all different colours)

LA ROMA is my favourite for one for canning /cooking

I know that is more than three!!!

Sungold - for growth and fruiting ability, non ripe yet but loads of fruit.
Ferline - for growing well outside in my cold climate, have some small fruit growing.
Black Cherry - also very good growth and many fruits.
Alicante - one largeish fruit but quite a few more now.

Not very impressed with Garden Pearl, ugly looking bush plant and tomatoes very small. Although so far the only one to ripen, and its outside. Last year the Tumbler was much better.

Sweet Olive; early, reliable and prolific, indoor and out, nice whole in salads.

Speckled Roman; long pointed speckled fruits, one per sandwich, also good for sauces.

Tigerella; Attractive, tasty, multi use and I never have a problem getting kids to eat it! ;D

Am I the only person who is not a fan of Sungold........they split all over the place at the lightest touch and attracted fruit flies like mad last year..... :-\

Post by: Jeannine on July 14, 2007, 11:25:53: Deb, with your Sungolds may I suggest 2 things, you may be leaving them a tad too long on the vine,they have to be picked on time to avoid cracking which is sometimes diffifcult with an orange one. OR they will split if the plant gets dry and then well watered as they get a growth surge.

Post by: Deb P on July 14, 2007, 12:02:07: I did have watering problems last year with it being so dry and working full time......this year I've added a scoop of water retaining gel to my bottomless pots sat in grow bags, but of course this year they have not really needed it so far.... :(

In WV today they had a tomato plant with toms including blight ,dont they just think of everthing!

p,s M&S have pepper plants for £10,form an orderly queue,,,

Post by: Squashfan on July 16, 2007, 13:51:45: Big fan of Black Krims myself. Also like the orange beefstealk type, can remember name ::). This year I'm growing all kinds - pink, white, cherry, whatever! This is what happens when you go mad at a seed swap! ;D
