I am so envious of that date it is so special, having said that I don't know how you will cope, at your busiest time. I jusr remembered I didn't get my date but it is February and our bump was 8 weeks last week. Do you know anything about this triple thingy they do to Mums, it involves blood work and another scan at 12 weeks? I don't think it is a general thing,I got  the impression it is for high risk pregnancies but I am so out of date I didn't know when she mentioned it and didn't want to ask in case it worried her.

Hi jeannine- no bump for me I'm afraid ::) might adopt again at some point in the future but not this year....  regarding you question, I am on the admin team of this website:

www.fertilityzone.co.uk

it has a very good section called ask Rose (she is a member who happens to be a midwife)  there is also a very active preg section where you can ask other members questions. its free, and has a very similar layout to this site

sam's due 15th october, we're all much more relaxed now and looking forward to it, she didn't have a triple thingy, jeannine, although she had miscarried last time, she has to have a glucose tolerance test now, as ray has been diagnosed with diabetes, hope everything goes ok, sam did have another scan at 12 weeks though, the little darlin' was turning somersaults  ;D

Manics do you know what the triple thingy is,I think it is the blood test to determine things like spina bifida etc but my daughter in law thinks not, maybe something got lost in the Dutch translation maybe there is another test they do there..

You still have way to go though, it is exciting but a little scary too as she miscarried too and I am willing the weeks away.

Gosh it has changed so much since I did my midwifery in the 60's , I hardly know anything anymore.

Thanks for the link Veggiemite I will take a look at that, I do wish you luck too, I think I take somethings for granted sometimes, it is not so easy for everyone. Hugs  XX Jeannine

I thought the triple thingy blood test for spina bifida etc, was for certain ages, as sam's only just 30, she's a mite too young for that one..if your daughter in law's feeling fine, I think that says something about the babe, sam was very sick with the other one, never felt 'right'.. anyway, good thoughts winging their way  :)

Jeannine, do you mean an amniocentisis?  It is used to detect any possible chromosome abnormalities in the unborn child that may cause Down's syndrome or other congenital problems.
A sample of amniotic fluid is taken (which is why there is a risk factor) and analysed.

Ooo goodnes you grannys and grandads are gonna be busy with knitting and whatnot!

Jeannine - I had my first in 95 and second in 98 - the 2 1/2 years between them midwifery had changed quite a bit then... wouldn't like to hazard a guess how much it has changed in 10 years for me!

I do remember bloods at 12 weeks... one of them is risk of downsyndrome - chromosome check... think its pretty normal so dont worry too much.  If the count comes back high then they refer to an amnio.  Not sure what else they check at that time.

Fabulous picture Jeannine. Is the test you are talking about the alpha foeto protein test? I think if the levels are very low it can be an indicator of neural damage in the foetus.

AFP level are very high if there is an open Neural Tube Defect...I don't think that is the test she was trying to identify, I tried to work out which one it was but the timings don't fit any UK tests very well. Must be a Dutch thing!

Well apparently we are in for a very busy October, very high bookings at the maternity unit where I work. Tell me about it!
I've been busy all night delivering babies.......now off to bed (yawn)...

I've a 33-week, kicking madly bump at the moment. First one, likely to be an only (I'm too old to do this again!) and it's completely prevented any lottying this year thanks to making me rather sicker than I expected. (Another reason for it being an only child!)

The 12-week test you are discussing is called a nuchal translucency: it was developed by the Fetal Medicine Foundation and is primarily an ultrasound scan, made between 11 and 13 weeks, to measure the diameter of a fold of skin. Years of observational research have shown that the diameter, combined with a knowledge of the maternal age, allows a risk of chromosomal abnormalities to be made. This is primarily Down's syndrome, but that's only trisomy-21; there's a couple of other trisomies too. There's also evidence that the nuchal fold can also predict a lot of other defects. If you have the scan, there's usually an option to have blood tests too: a dual one at the time or a triple later on.

Because of my age, I started with a risk of 1:89 chance of Down's.  After the scan, it dropped to 1:675, and when the bloods came back, it was 1:1189 so I was happy not to have further tests. It told me that my risk of a Down's baby was that of a 20-year-old mother. Nice thing is that it's non-invasive for the baby - where amniocentesis and chorionic villus-sampling rely on needles being stuck in, which gives a 2-3% risk of miscarriage. Though you get a definite result from those, as against a simple qualitative risk assessment for the nuchal. If I'd have had a less than 1:200 final result, my GP would have sent me for the invasive tests.

Glad you are feeling better now Moonbells! Good time of year to be pregnant now the weather is cooling down a bit... ;D

I suggested nuchal translucency to Jeannine but she didn't think it was that, it was another blood test. We offer 12 week dating scans in the area where I work, and the 'quadruple' blood tests at around 15 weeks, but few units use the nuchal translucency as a general screening test in our area. I'm afraid it comes down to budgets, scanning equipment, consultants preferences and pressures on scanning time....

I was a 'mature' mum when I had my first (even more mature three years later when I had my second!) and had to pay to have the 'triple' blood test done as it was not widely available then and had to be sent to a London hospital for analysis! ;D

i am a week overdue with my first - but hopefully something is happening today fingers crossed. have had mild contractions all night every 10 mins or so, still continuing now. just willing them to get stronger and closer together (though OUCH! but i'll cope)

lottying this year has been slightly less organised due to bump - and then in july and august we had buildes in and no kitchen so i didnt even harvest anything for 7 weeks as couldnt cook. tomatoes are going mental although coming to an end now, was digging potatoes yesterday, got squashes and sweet potatoes to harvest.

been looking for purple srouting broccoli plantlets as havent had organisational skill to grow seedlings in time. if i planted now-ish, i should have some in february/march - trouble is i cant seem to buy them anywhere (marshalls etc).

anyone got any ideas?

PS: as with moonbells, been told i have the body of a 16 year old. i wasnt complaining :D

Hope it all speeds up for you soon.

Our Boots the Chemist have started renting out a labour TENS machine. Dont know if they work though. Have you got one?

Has anyone on here tried one during labour? Not that I have any intentions of needing one again. 4 children are definately enough  for me!!!!

All the best Svea :D

I tried a TENS when in labour with my second....had it turned up so high I was vibrating with the pulses!!!! Works really well for some women, most don't turn it up high enough, quickly enough to get the best effect. I also had one when I had a back injury, worked well.

Hope all is going well Svea, eat well and carbohydrate load a bit....nice relaxing bath if things aren't picking up pace yet....... ;D

Deb,

I tried one to help with the pain after a neck injury. It didnt work for me though, just sent my neck muscles into spasm, whatever level I set it on. SHame really, as it's a wonderful thing if you can get relief from it .

I'm trying to get my daughter to try one when she has her baby. She's not convinced though, as she says that labour cant be much worse than period pains :-X. I dont want to frighten her, so I may rent one secretly. and take it to her when things get a bit 'intense'. ;)

More like nine months accumalated period pain in my experience!  ;D It varies so much though, I've looked after women in labour who have sat smiling and writing out shopping lists throughout lucky things! They are the exception rather than the rule though! I think you are right not to frighten her, TENS work best when put on in early labour though, if you put one on too late it doesn't seem to be as effective but worth a try.

Wish I really did have the body of a 20-year old instead of someone twice that! There's one line in Raiders of the Lost Ark that I love - it's not the years, hon, it's the mileage... and I feel like that sometimes! (In 1981 Harrison Ford was 39 so was younger than me when he said it!!!)

Back problems, knee problems endemic. I'm just glad the reproductive part is apparently young! It's going to need to be!

Well, the last few months have flown by, and Naomi is due on Monday! The midwife thinks baby is very big, so is going to do a 'sweep' on Monday to gee him along a bit.

She's a bit worried, and so is really hoping he comes on his own before then.

Anyone got any ideas on how to get labour started?

Thanks.

tinned pear.

That reminds me of a lady in our church. She is in her 80's. Her mother was feeling unwell and went to the doctors. He broke the news to her that she was about 4 months pregnant, and sent her straight to the midwife. The midwife said she thought she was 6 months pregnant at least.

On the way home, she visited her mum, and said she was feeling worse. He mum was quite short with her and told her she had to toughen up, as being pregnant would be much worse towards the end. They gave her a plum and she went home. 2 hours later, Elvie was born!!!

Her Dad went to work in the morning, and came home to find his first child!!

Apparently, she was very small, and they didnt think she would survive. Well, she did, and is still going well!!

Whenever anyone is late having a baby, she says to give them a plum, as it worked for her!!

I'll pass on your ideas Cam, and let you know if there is any progress ;D

Hi all  ;D

Our eldest arrived a fortnight late, the youngest a month early and the middle one just about on time.....so I guess as grawc says, babies arrive as and when they're ready!

A couple of suggestions I was given: castor oil and orange juice - tastes disgusting, hot baths, riding down really bumpy roads, exercise.

so I guess as grawc says, babies arrive as and when they're ready!

A couple of suggestions I was given: castor oil and orange juice - tastes disgusting, hot baths, riding down really bumpy roads, exercise.

I wouldn't recommend the first two suggestions, not only does castor oil taste disgusting it can give you horrendous diarrhoea (which it how it is supposed to help labour along, by hyperstimulating the bowel!) but some women are pretty sensitive about their bowels in late pregnancy and worry about them at birth so may not appreciate that!

Hot baths, now not recommended as can raise maternal temperature too high and adversely affect the fetal metabolism (birthing pools temperatures are kept around 36-37degrees)

When I was training  the community midwives used to do 'OBE's' (oil , bath and enemas) all designed to stimulate the bowel and therefore indirectly the uterus. Nowadays that is replaced with a cervical sweep once overdue (as you said) to literally try and stir things up, some will also mention curry and sex,  all supposed to do the same thing as the bumpy roads and exercise bit.

In my experience, Grawc is right; they make their appearance in their own time!

Don't let her worry too much about the size of the baby, most babies are pretty sensible and grow to fit their mums, plus the babies have a clever may of making their heads slightly smaller in labour to fit through by overlapping their skull bones. Ultimately they will either be able to make their way through or not, worrying about it will only make her more anxious and anxiety can affect the progress of labour. True dystocia (where the baby grows too big to fit through mum's pelvis) is rarer that most people think; although my little nan (now 93) who is 4' 9" remembers being put on a diet during her second pregnancy 'so the baby didn't grow too big'!

Yes I expect  things to have changed since those suggestions were offered to me 21 years ago, apparently they were accepted methods to induce labour especiallly in the cases of overdue babies.

24 hours on and only a slight back ache, which has come and gone a few times over the last few days.

It seems the home birth she was hoping for is off, as her blood count is too low. Maybe it will be for the best.

I was born at home, but when I had mine, home births were not an option. Now the midwives Naomi is under try to encourage it. Oh how times change...and change back again....and change....

That's midwifery for you! I did some births in small midwife led units in the early eighties, they were all closed in the nineties and 'centralised' big units were the rage, now we have midwife led care units within the big Consultant led units, and homebirth rate has gone up... :-\!

Hope things go well, let us know how she gets on! ;D

She had a 'sweep' this morning, but still not a twinge. The midwife is planning to do it again on Wednesday.

If still no baby, they will book her in for an induction, but that will not be till after christmas!

Hopefully, I will be able to post a much more positive message in the morning ::) Phone will be by the bed all night incase ;D

Naomi has to have another 'sweep' tomorrow. I am begining to wonder if they do any good, or it is all down to coincidence. So many people have had numerous sweeps, and many unsuccessful.

It is Phil's uncle's birthday tomorrow, Phils on friday, then christmas eve and christmas, so the chances are , it will be on a day of some significance or other. If not, it just means we will have another significant day to add to the list ;D

I'm off now to sit by the phone and will it to ring ::)

I thought once the waters broke they took you in regardless and induced the baby..... or is that old hat??
Title: Re: Who has had or is having a baby this year
Post by: carolinej on December 19, 2007, 17:04:55
The midwife says she cant be sure the waters have gone. I tend to think Naomi got it right though, from what she described.

Also, when I had my third, I was told my waters hadnt gone and I wasnt in labour (although I was sure they had and I was!). Eventually they took me to the delivery room to asses me, as they thought that would 'calm me down, as I was getting a bit stressed'. 45 minutes later, Tim was born!

They put me down as a 45 minute labour, although in my estimation it was about 14 hours. The midwife was panicking when I took 45 minutes to reach the hospital on my 4th. She was standing at the door, willing me to get there in time ::)

Apparently, when the waters have gone, they like to monitor the baby every 15 minutes. Seems a bit extreme then, to send her home as they cant be sure. I would have thought better safe than sorry :-\

Anyway, no good fretting. I will just go back to 'phonewatch' ;D

Hopefully more news soon.

I thought once the waters broke they took you in regardless and induced the baby..... or is that old hat??

Depends whereabouts in the country you have your baby! ::)
Advice seems to change on a monthly basis depending on which bit of research you read too I'm afraid.....

First step is to confirm they actually have gone, not as simple as you might think! Not everyone gets a deluge, some women get a slow leak every so often, it can be really difficult to tell. Usually involves having to go to a midwife to confirm with a speculum exam, literally having a look and seeing if liquor can be seen draining.

If confirmed, the clock starts ticking...most women will go into labour spontaneously within 48 hours, and are offered induction if there is no sign beyond that (local policies will vary, anything from straightaway to 96 hours). If there is any sign of any complication, e.g liquor draining is anything but clear, mum feels unwell or has a temperature, induction is recommended immediately on the basis that a small number of women will develop an intrauterine infection. Some hospitals offer women IV antibiotics if their waters have been broken over 24 hours even if they have no complications because of this. Phew! Are you still with me! :-\

Our local guidelines recommend monitoring the baby's heartbeat every 15 minutes (or continuously if pregnancy or labour becomes complicated) 'once labour is established'..also tricky to define as Caroline describes! Doesn't count from the first contractions I'm afraid, only from when they become powerful enough to
progressively dilate the cervix
which might explain the discrepancy between mothers and midwives recorded length of labour (spoiler used to protect those of a delicate disposition!!).

Having said that, experience has taught me that most women know perfectly well when they are in labour and do not need midwives to 'tell' them!  ;D ;D ;D

Without doubt, labour is a different experience for every woman, so my job is never boring  8), but it does make it difficult to give 'general' advice as there is such a wide range of 'normal'!

She is going for Christmas Eve, I bet you, wasn't that the original date

Give her some more hugs, it can be depressing I know.

My first was 10 days late then induced, my second 2 weeks then induced, my third a week then induced, same with my fourth, number 5 was induced 6 weeks early and number 6 they induced on the due date. I don't apparently go into labour, some defective bit in  me. I tied everything imaginable to try to start on my own and believe me there are a lot of old wives tales out there, but nothing worked, even when they popped my water I didn't go into labour, I always needed the pituitrin stuff before my body started, this is what my body doesn't make enough of I am told.

Hang in there Caroline I suspect you are going to have an extra special busy Christmas Eve.

God Bless and keep in touch.

PS I have tries to get you on the MSN thingy , it says you are there, but I don't think my messages are reaching you.

Well, Naomi rung at 3am to say she thought things had started. 20 mins later, she rung to say she was off to the hospital. 4am we had a call to say her waters had gone, she was in labour but had to go home till contractions were 1 min long every 3 mins. As she had driven herself to hospital (I thought she had phones for an ambulance!!) she tried to drive home but was in too much pain, so could we go to pick her up.

When we got there, she was lying on the car seat, in terrible pain and very distressed and frightened. I calmed her and Tom down, and 15 mins later managed to get her to the toilets in the hospital reception. There was quite a lot of blood, so I sent Tom to ring the ward to tell them I wasnt happy and wanted her back on the ward. They said ok and we took her up.

The midwife was concerned at the blood loss, and so took bloods incase a caesarean was necessary. The consultant was called. He said it was the result of the speed of the labour, and that things were well under way.

She was really fast until at 8am, she was fully dilated, but the contractions slowed and became mild. She was put on a drip at 8.40, and Ieuan arrived at 9.50.

He is 9 lb 6 oz 55cm long and gorgeous ;D ;D

I stayed throughout, as Naomi was really frightened, and Tom was quite shook up too. It was amazing. My first birth at the business end!!!

So much for getting a phone call when it was all over. Still, I'm really glad I was there.

They are keeping her in tonight because of the blood loss, but she will be ok to come home tomorrow.

Thanks for all your support and wishes.

giggle!

First time MiniSir did it to Sir, there was this yell... and I couldn't stop laughing. He ought to have known. MiniSir did it to the midwife less than 5 mins after he was born and just after he was weighed, so he'd not even got his first nappy on!

Hi Folks, yes 5 weeks for us, and to think at first we were scared she would lose this one too, last midwife check this week has shown she has aleady dropped down and estimated at birth is 4 1/2 kilos, that is almost 10 pounds I think.Mum is puffing a bit now but she  is well she is late 30's so I don't blame her, but eveything looks good.

I have stopped knitting, I started the day we got the news and kept it up till mid Ocotober when they came over from Holland for a week, she has enough knits to last her till the 6 month stage ,and clothes...well I am almost as bad as with seeds,God Bless E bay!! I had 2 full suitcases of stuff when she got here!!

I am excited, just to remind you all, she is to be called Alexandria Jeannine.

Sad thing is they are in the North of Holland.

I have been working on ideas for starting a collection of something for her to start on her birth day, any ideas anyone.

Caroline, I laughed at the sicky bit, I used to wear a towel on my shoulder with one of mine all the time.

Matthew 'christened' his dad both ways last week, as Mike lifted his legs to move the nappy, he started spraying..he put his hand under to stop his clothes getting wet and had something deposited in his palm.. ;D ;D ;D
this was in Asda changing room, he had to ring sam on the mobile, she was having a coffee  ;D ;D ;D
I told him he should've bought a lottery ticket
I got the milky shoulder on Christmas eve, while in my finery, and I don't care, it's lovely whatever happens  ;D

Oh eck..call from Holland this morning, our one seemed on the way last night, Marcianna spent all night at the hospital, 3cm dilated and pain regularly every three minutes but it didn't progress beyond that, if she had got to 4cm they would have helped her on? So she is home again, still with the pains which are "very uncomfortable" but not getting any worse. So a depressed Mum to be at the moment, still officially about 3 weeks to go though.

I wanted to go and hug her.

She has arrived....phone call came this afternoon as I was doing home  visits on the estate, pulled over to take the call, then sat there like a baby bawling my head off, wonderful news and no one to tell.

She is fine, Marcianna is tired but well, they put her on a drip to get things moving and she had her an hour later!!

My son's first and he is forty this year!!

Baby was in the room with Mum, so they put her to the phone and I heard her gurgling,so we have chatted already, and just 12 minutes old then.

What a relief.

Great news from Paulinesms too, well done, I bet you  feel just like me, I ma as happy for you as I am for me.

They say they go in threes, well today another teacher at school got her first Grandchild too, and we have a teacher due today and she is in mild labour.

It must be Spring!!

Time to start planting I think.
