I was up at the allotment last night and some of my autumn-sown onions have fallen over - bent at the necks.
At first I thought some meanie fox had stomped on them, but when I got home I discovered that they are meant to do this, this means they will be ready soon!!! I am so happy!!!!!

p.s. as you might have guessed, I have never grown onions before...!

Ten, Our Japanese onions sound just like yours. We have picked a few and cooked them - lovely! I have heard they don't keep very long once they are picked though, so I thought we could just pick them when we needed them. I wondered if this would be the best way of going on, but I wouldn't want them to go to seed. Would be grateful for some advice as well. ??? busy_lizzie

I always grow the Autumn planted ones .When they are ready(mine arent yet)i.e.the stalks go over. Take them up dry them .Then tie them with twine or use the stocking/tights method and hang them.I have never had any difficulty with storing them.They have kept very well at the back of my outhouse door until all used up.
