Title: Our lotties are shot this year I think.I am so sad now
Post by: Jeannine on June 21, 2007, 17:36:43
i managed to get out for a little while today and go to the lottie.

We had gone on Sunday after all the rains and thought it was going to be OK.

Today...I cried.

Almost everything on the flat ground is ruined.

John has pulled out all the broad beans, the caulis, broccoli, turnips, swede, and most of the cabbages.

They had all flattened out today and were obviously in real trouble.

On closer inspection they are still sitting in water, the level is about an inch below the soil, so they have been soaking now for almost a week, most of the roots have rotted off,we pulled a cabbage and the roots stayed in the ground, some of the pools of water around are smelly and a bit bubbly. What we pulled up had mushy bits in it and stank .

The brussels we left as they were sort of standing. The spuds were looking sad but were standing too, they are on a tad higher ground but the tubers must still be under water??

All my assorted heirloom beans look like they have had it, we left them just in case.

To make matters worse, I think every slug in the neighbourhood crawled up into our raised beds to escape the water and have now dined on all my beetroot, carrots, lettuce etc. They haven't touched the parsnips and there are spuds still in two raised beds, I think the onions, garlic and shallots might be OK too.

I had put all my winter brassicas out to harden them off under a net, they were under water,we rescued them  as the rains came down but it was too late, they have had it.

The other lottie which was to take all my replacement squash is a lake if you go down an inch so all my babies ready to go out are suffering as they have now out grown their pots, and it is impossible to plant them.

One greenhouse which is in a low end was well flooded and I think the melons in there will have had it too.

The tomatoes, peppers, cukes and aubs, which are in the other 2 greenhouses seem OK for now. They were a bit higher.

I had no weeds 2 weeks ago, now they are coming up just fine,

And to top it all, it has started raining again.

We are going to have to replant all the carrots etc and all the brassicas.

I can't believe the state of the area now as compared to the pictures we put on 2 weeks ago.

We will no doubt re group but right now I feel sick.

Oh dear.  You have our sympathy, FWIW.  There's real love that goes into a lottie, I realise, and it's dispiriting even to lose a little bit to the weather.  To be inundated must be heartbreaking.

Jeannine, I am so sorry to read your post, I have just come back from my allotment upset because the rabbits have been eating my plants but now I feel guilty about being upset, yours sounds so much worse.  I hope things pick up for you soon.   :(

Jeannine how sad............hopefully it will drain away soon and you will still have time to plant stuff. I would be devastated if it happened to mine, sending you cyber hugs. I am sure there are a few of us more than willing to send you spare stuff to help you get back going again........not the same as losing things like your heritage beans, but a start!
I may have some kale and purple sprouting, and if they ever show lettuces!

Jeannine really, really sorry to hear about your crops. After all the hard work you and John have put in you must be devastated. I hope you manage to salvage some or still have time to sow more. Take care and try not to have more sleepless nights.

I should just stop feeling sorry for myself.

I have been off work ill all week while they have been trying to mop up our school without me, the school was 8 inches under water and all the poopy drains flooded in to the half the classrooms, and my rooms which I only got refurbished last year.

Many of the houses round about the school also had the sewers flood into the house, so the loss of my veggies is diddly really. I guess it is the realisation when it hits you.

We have seeds etc, but it is like a face slap.

Thank you all for your concern.

I feel most for John, he has been there everyday working like mad and he has to start all over again just when it was all falling into place.

:) if its any consolation Jeannine the weather is affecting most lottie holders and there plots :(

here in Lincoln we have had 5 thunder storms in a week and torrential rain most of the time,

my plot is flattened but not under water as luckily  my plot is on a hill, but some of my fellow lottie holders plots are under water, :(

but things like this only bring out the good in people, as you know from this site :)

If you need anything let us know, best wishes/ angle shades  :-*

Just found this thread. So sorry Jeannine and John :'( That is really rotten for you.

I hope you manage to salvage some things and get more going.

It looks like the weather will be drying up a bit over the weekend. Here's hoping it dries your lottie up pretty sharpish.

Thinking of you both.

Oh Jeannine, I am so sorry to hear about the water damage to your crops at the lottie.   :'( We can all sympathise with you, because we know how much work goes into having an allotment, and especially how much you have done there. Sometimes though you know plants are quite resiliant  and you might be able to rescue more than you think, once water finally drains away.  No wonder you are feeling so down, which will have been made worse because you are not well at the moment. Just want to send you a big hug of sympathy.  :-* busy_lizzie

Honey I've been out sorting my garden all day so only found this post now.  You must feel so let down. I'm so so sorry. I think this is global warming starting to impact on our lives. We need to put pressure on politicians to make sure that flood protection for example is on place and that drainage is massively improved.

Big hugs Jeannine and John.

Awww Jeannine have a hug!

You must feel so bad.  But don't dispair too much - in a couple of weeks the water will have drained away and things will look brighter.  Get some bigger pots for the squashes - you CAN save them, go to asda and get the flower buckets and pot them on!

Everything else you have lost, but think of the space for the other things you can now sow/plant.

All is NOT lost Jeannine - just a run of bad luck and bad weather.  Things will get better :-)

Bad luck Jeannine and John.

In a few weeks when the ground is baked hard from all the sun and no rain then you will wonder if it was all a bad dream.  I'm sure with your combined experience and enthusiasm you will be able to rescue enough to get you through the season.

Chin up chuck.

Thaqnk you, we will be fine.

I can't figure the ruddy weeds though, they are growing through puddles, and we can't stand on the ground to get at them. I tried today and it like standing on quicksand. I went in up to my ankles, slurp, slurp...

We have rain forcast for the next 7 days too.

I am laughing a bit now,the thought of John  having to rescue me as I slowly dropped from view.

"What an absolute bummer!"

Go on, shout that out and shake your fist...it might make you feel a teensy bit better?
You could probably do with kicking something too.  Nothing too hard though ,you don't want an injured tootsie!

Feel really sorry for you. I'd be well fed up too.

Did I tell you I dropped my mobile phone into a rock pool on Tuesday? Kapputt! Unfortunately it was a pressie from OH...he isn't impressed. Well, I hate the blinking things anyway... mobiles that is, not OH's...but this is the second one that the North Sea has claimed and I think he is suspicious  :D  :D

Oh, Jeannine, I am sooo sorry to hear about your plots. After you have helped so many people on here get theirs going- life's just NOT FAIR and you have every right to moan! I was getting depressed last night because my plot was knee deep in weeds after all the rain, but at least the plants among the weeds are still there.
I do hope you can salvage something and that this d*** weather improves so you can sow some more soon. xxxxxx

I know the feeling! I've had similar experiences multiple times, till I managed enough earth shifting to keep most of the floods out, and make sure the unstoppable ones flowed straight off. If your soil doesn't drain, what you probably need is raised beds. Fortunately, floods like that one don't happen too often!

Meanwhile, put in some quick-maturing crops so you do at least get something, and plan a strategy for next year.

Poor you, Jeannine. The lower-lying half of my plot is also standing three or more inches underwater. If Small Triff hadn't been there with me, I'd have let the tears come through. Like you, I've got to start over with all the beans. Just time, I think... it's only midsummer.

Big hugs and sympathy.

Has any one got any good recipes for couch grass omelette's or perhaps, nettle souffle, chickweed bread perhaps.

Well I have stopped bawling and I am sure we will re plant but not this week.

The one lottie which is half raised beds will be fully raised by the end of the season we think, so that will help, the other one I don't want to do raised beds as it is my Pumpkin Playground Patch.

Thanks for all the hugs,

Oh no, the sense of humour stays even through the tears,it's a family thing I get from my Dad, we even managed a really good giggle at Mum's funeral.

My Mum had this impatient comment she used when my Dad was stuck behind slow drivers ..." Oh,'ell anybody would think we were going to a bloody funeral!!"

So, creeping 5 miles an hour following the hearse with my Dad, he said " If you Mum was in this car she would be saying..........."

We lost it, we started to laugh and cry at the same time, people who were watching us go past, cap in hand, were really confused.

No, there are too many ills in this world to worry about  lost cabbages.

You are AMAZING Jeannine! I'd probably still be moping.  ;D
Your post about the funeral made me laugh. When my dad's dad died i was in car with my 2 sisters and 3 cousins. We were all laughing our heads off about things my grandad used to say and singing doo be doo, I wanna be like you-oo-ooo, as that's what he always played us EVERY visit from his Jungle Book record.
Also as a non practising Catholic he used to think it was hilarious in church when you do 'peace be with you' to say 'cheese be with you' so off we all went in the church, much to the annoyance of the stricter members of his side of the family!

Ah a bit of inappropriate laughter always the best kind I feel!! So sorry to hear what's been happening to everyone recently, this weather is absolutely unbelievable to us Southerners, we had a flood a month back but nothing like what you are describing. Lots of sympathy to you Jeannine and John and everyone else whose efforts have been destroyed by weather, vandals or anything else!! I really hope you can all bounce back somehow. I have some small Lil' Pumpkemons from you Jeannine that I would be glad to donate if I can get them to you and planting can be restarted :)

Emmy that is priceless, and why not, he would have enjoyed the joke too.

The best one I ever knew about was a  friend whose Dad got very hot under the collar about the money spent on funerals. He was also very vocal about folks who spend a fortune on their cars.So much so that in his will he left strict instructions that it was to be done on the cheap and no big money was to be spent on fancy cars or posh ham salads.

He was grand old fella, real salt of the earth type, but his daughter was not, she was very materialistic which caused some words between them many times.

We all lived in a fairly remote small town in Canada at that time, one funeral director who doubled as  the local cars to hire man among other things.

Anyway Sally decided to ignore her Dad's request and lay it all on.

The day of the funeral happened to be the day of a big wedding  in town too, if you weren't at one , you were at the other.

Up comes the hearse with Dad in the back, shocked faces from the crowd as they all knew how he felt, off we all went, following in the posh limos she had ordered.
It was about 9 miles drive.

Halfway way there the  hearse conked out, no mobiles in those days, somebody phoned from a near by farm but all the other folks from the funeral parlour had gone to the wedding and there was no answer.

Dad's coffin was moved to the back of another car to finish his journey much to the embarrassment of Sally.

So he turned up at the cemetery in the only car long enough to take the coffin, which was borrowed from the farmer..a rusty old Chevvy station wagon, tied down with a bungy cord at the back, complete with smoky exhaust and back firing.

It was very difficult to not laugh at the graveside.

Jeannine, I've just seen this post... I'm not very far away from you (near Doncaster) and I've also pretty much lost the contents of my allotment in the same way that you have.    I can't believe how the weeds are coming up either.  I'm getting lots of that tall weed that looks like dandelions but I'm told is toxic to horses - and mares tail, of course.

Miserable, isn't it?

Hi Curly, yes it is miserable, but I have to try to get things into perspective, What pulled ne out of yesterdays sadness was thinking about the  folks who lost so much in the terrible flooding a few years ago, completely wiped out homes, families, jobs , everything, and it could just have easily been our part of the world.

Hang in there, it will all seem better soon.

Thank you for the hug and comments.

Its lovely the way that folk at the allotments are pulling together - those that haven't been flooded are helping those that have.

One of my golden oldie allotment neighbours suggested that I lift as many plants as I possibly can and pot them up temporarily in dry compost or topsoil until the ground dries out a bit.   I've spent the morning doing exactly that - fingers crossed I've managed to salvage something.

We had another lottie visit today and it really is bad.

The few brassicas we left in have turned to mush as have everyone of the bean plants and the foliage on the potato plants is dying off now, the melons in the flooded greenhouse have been chucked now.

While we there the rains cane down very heavy and within 15 minutes everything was awash again.

We stayed in the old greenhouse and watched the level rise. One end of it was about 4 inches deep when we left.

We managed to plant the sweet potatoes in very large plastic sacks and raise them to safety so I think they will be OK. The toms, peppers and aubs are fine and the raised beds are OK.

The second lottie which was to have held my squash collection is still totally waterlogged and the squash plants won't wait much longer if at all so it looks as if they won't get in anywhere now.. We also had some other brassicas in the home greenhouse that I had thought were lost due to hardening off, but there is no place to put them either so we will lose them too.

Ours is one of about 10 lotties on the patch that sits in a small dip so  it affects us a lot more than some others.

On the good side, we have some decent sized peppers  coming along nicely and a few tiny aubs.

An interesting observation. We have 12 hot peppers, all different, 10 have flowers or fruit, 9 of them have have white flowers but one is different and very pretty. It is a Variegated Hot Pepper, loaded with small violet flowers and about 8 or 9 small fruits the colour of an aubergine,( they never were green) and  combined with the colourful foliage it is  making  a very nice looking plant.

Oh and for interest, the first one to fruit was the Georgia Flame

Our tomatoes are doing well, some types are very big now,Ponderosa  is  the biggest so far and is huge.

So when the rain stops and the ground clears I think we will be well ahead for the end of the year clean up.

Oh well, lots of time to plan for next year!!

I do hope everyone else is hanging in there, it certainly has been a trying year.

XX Jeannine

We are actually fine , it is depressing  as John has worked so hard this year, and mostly for me as he is not a big veggie eater, I feel  sorry for him more than the crops, but we are realistic too, it has happened  but we will get over it and as he says it is freak weather and is rare.

We will just order an organic box per week, I have never done that before so something  new to look forward  to.

Thank you again for your kind thoughts.

Our local forecast is rain for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesda, then 2 days of sun, then 2 more days of rain.

This was my first year with an veg allotment and I think after all this it is going to be my last.  With global warming who knows if this kind of erratic weather is the shape of things to come.  I'll keep my first the allotment with the chickens and fruit trees on it but I can't afford to lose the kind of money (and time) I've put in to the veg allotment.... and the heart break of course.

Curly , don't do anything hasty, this is really a freak, I have never known it this bad,we are certainly not even attempting to plant anything else this year but it will not be an annual event I  feel certain. My plot has flooded in the winter but never at this time of the year.

Please don't decide now, talk to your neighbours, find out what is usual in your area.

We are going to extend our raised beds over the low area, even in the low greenhouse raising the inside floor by about 5 inches would have kept the crops safe.

Have a hug , a deep breath and think it through a bit longer.Please.

Well we are now bogged down so to speak, there are only three ways to get to our house and all three roads are closed, and it is still chucking it down!!

John  tried to get out in the car  about an hour ago but had to turn back.

No buses either

He has now gone out on foot, the silly old twerp.

We packed a plant for mailing last night and he was determined to send it and we needed cat food..

It is about 3 miles to the post office.

I better run a bath ready for him.

It looks as if there is a fire hose turned on out there.WHERE is is it all coming from.

Oh and we have high winds now

Up date, we now have 47 schools closed in Hull.

One man  has died after being trapped for 3 hours after trying to  unblock a drain.

Louise we are OK, we have enough food etc in this house to last a year,it was just the cat treats.

We have candles and camping stoves, bottled water, medications, and when my beloved twerp gets home, everything we need. Our house has quite a high step front and back  and it is so far not up to the house, the water is about 3 feet from the bricks, but we are fine.

Door has just slammed shut, my hero is home. He got the food and the parcel is mailed.

Have you ever seen a 68 year old wrinkled drowned rat !!!!

Sorry to hear about your disaster with the plot curly and Jeanine.
We had it bad in the night, but it is now dry. This morning they announced on the radio that the road by the allotment was flooded and closed, so I am not sure how the plot will be.
I might pop out after tea, if it is still dry, and have a look.

next month we will be begging for rain  ;D

And lets face it we need a lot of rain to fall to make up for the last few dry summers. Still its not fair that it should fall on just a couple of areas. The weather forcast shows the rain comming over east anglia overnight with stong winds. So you might have a dryer day tomorrow.

Jeannine i am sure John is all dry and warm now lets hope he does not get a cold from all this  :D

Take it easy both of you.

I have only just got around to reading this thread. Sorry to hear about your plot Jeanine and Curly. Looks as if most of us are going to be affected by all this rain. Fortunately our half plot is at the top of a hill so its not so bad as thones below us , but even so it is like mud. Had to go dig some spuds for lunch. The arran Pilot are producing massive spud but only 3 or 4 per plant. Or 2 plots in Erdington are sandy so are not faring quite so bad. Lets hope July brings better weather for us all .

Well it has stopped raining in my part of Hull, and the water level has gone down in my garden, it never got into my house.

A call came today that school is closed for the week.

I presume when the water goes down and we can get in we will be all there cleaning it out, but I would presume my office is shot now along with the others.

We did OK in the end, 4 staff members that I know of have been flooded  from different parts of the town and there will be a lot of homes around the school.

For a minute or two it was sunny, but the dark clouds have just blown in.

We are going to look at the lottie shortly.

I hope eveyone else is doing OK.

Well we just went out.

1st stop the Lottie, completely under water a 2 feet or more , fireman were outside the gates pumping water from the flooded houses nearby,

Couple of lottoe owners outside who said "no chance to get in all the greenhouses are now flooded  so all the toms will be deadand no-one will have any this year.In I went, down the road ,men yelling I couldn't do anything. Water was way above my knees(nickies got wet) and out I came with two huge plants in big pots full of green tomatoes, as I go back to the main road, I winked and said, "Well lads ,some of us are going to have tomatoes"  We are going to have another go tomorrow for more

The water was above the level of the pots which were embedded in grow bags.

One of my 10 foot raised beds had actually floated off away about three feet and all the other beds were under water with just the top 3 inches of growth sticking out of the water on the onions.

So the whole lottie in completely under water now.

All three green houses will have had it. All except my hot peppers which were growing on staging

Next stop was school via several detours we managed to get there, It sits in a dip so we got to the gate, looking across the playground the water was half way up the doors on every building.

We ventured into the estate till the water was too deep for the car. I walked in to see a few parents, 4 streets full of houses were flooded, the water in the street was higher than the lottie. Everyone was in remarkably good spirits.

So that was my day out.

Is everyone else OK

Ahhh at least you saved something.  The high end of my 2 plots was up to 6" deep in water today.  Fortnuately teh chooks have a bit of dry ground.

All the beetroot is under 3 inches and one lot of maincrop pots.

Wellies leaked, though they werent much use anyway as the water was deeper in most places than the height of my ankle wellies so had wet feet.

Poor squashes are water logged so no idea how they will fare... given that my plot is the last one up there that drains i think i will prob lose the lot too.

Oh and to top it off my water butt is still no more full than it has been?????

I still have my Blaby tom and  my Whippersnapper as they had been sent my other members and I kept them at home

I have 2 Micro Toms at home too and now 2 very loaded Tumblers.

If we do manage to get any of the others home they will have to stay outside, but we think they are perhaps tp big to move and are well and truly tied in.

In parts of the area they  are still sand bagging some areas that have drained as we are told it is coming again.

 :)too right Olive!

been to plot ,it's under a few inches of water, managed to get some spuds by putting rubber gloves on and feeling around in the gunge for them, and then washing them in surrounding water,it's easier than digging them up :)

picked loads of broad beans which are easier to pick now they are flat to the ground ::)and shelled them at the plot in water logged boots :)

it hasn't rained today which is a god send

I have to walk down the river bank which ever way i go to my plot

the river is coming over in some places and all the houses have loads of sand bags at their doors and worried house holders stood watching the river

as I've mentioned before like most allotments ours are on a flood plane, so if the river goes over another inch we have had it,but the house holders will lose so much more which will be harder to replace/ shades x

Hi Jeannine and all. Been thinking of you all over past few days, can't believe the level of flooding - just unreal. So gutted to hear so many of you have lost all your lottie. Just heartbreaking. All those houses flooded though and 4 dead - horrendous. So worried about all of you and my northern family. My uncle is in Yorkshire - Richmond but I think it's ok there. Yesterday my grandparents had to drive back to Blackpool but made it unscathed. My sisters are in the midlands but Brum ok.

Sorry to hear you plight Jeannine (and others)! my thoughts and prayers are with you all - I was horrified when watching the telly news last night with the pictures they were showing.  Glad you managed to save the tomato plants - I had a mental picuture of you wading around with your skirt hitched into your wellies!!   ;D  You go girlfriend - don't let that rude guy get you down.  We have just had lots of rain but thank goodness no flooding - yet!  I went down to the lottie after work yesterday and managed to get some of my red onions lifted as I was scared they would rot - the forecast for the week-end is wet!

The weather is really up the spout.  We were awoken at 6:30 this morning with a call from Johannesburg, South Africa to say they woke up to a blanket of snow - it last snowed there in September 1981!  This climate warming is really getting scary.

It is the level of the ground, sandbagging wouldn't help because the water would just come up through the soil anyway, everything floods even the road.

It has dropped at the moment so the raised beds are OK again, the greenhouses are still flooded but onle a couple of inches now and everthing in pots is sitting on tip of a growbag, the water level is halfway up the bag, so the pot itself is out of the water now.

We are working on a couple of options.

Thank you Cam, you are always so supportive XX Jeannine

Now that's a blast from the past! Do you know I sulked for a whole week of my holidays one year because we were away on holiday and I was missing my weekly shot of Flash Gordon.

Mmm wonder if you can get it on DVD... 8)

Anne, I bought the whole set for John one birthday, one of these days I need to ,ove it to DVD,it is so old I think it is allowed,if I ever do I will send you a copy. There is no copyright on it.

There are 4 videos, each one has 13-16  18minute chapters, about 4 hours total.

1. Spaceship To The Unknown
2.  The Deadly Ray From Mars
3.  The Peril From Planet Mango
4. The Purple Death From Outer Space

The description of Deadly Ray is:Mysterious floods, heatwaves, quakes and hurricanes are causing destruction on Planet Earth, Flash discovers Ming the Merciless has a lamp which is extracting all the nitron in the Earths atmosphere,Flash is off to destroy the lamp.   Sound familiar

FLASH GET THE RUDDY LAMP

Amazon have it  :) :) But it's region 1. We've just replaced our broken DVD player but  I'm not sure if it's multi-region. I'll check with my geeks when they get home.

Yes at trying times like these a Flash Gordon would come in handy. He'd have my neglected plots shipshape in no time flat and suck the water from Yorkshire to Chad.

Just read through this thread....missed it as I have only been popping in and out briefly for a while. I am so sorry for all you folks who have been affected by this gruesome weather. Jeannine I don't know how you stay so positive. These are strange times indeed, weatherwise.
Lets hope for a better July,Aug,Sept,Oct. ;)

Anne, make sure Amazons one is the Buster Crabbe one, there are 3 others.

Emaggie, I am positive by nature but right now it is easy enough when you look at what folks have lost, a lottie is pretty low on the totem pole.

I did cry buckets when we got into the school though, absolutely everything has gone, books, toys, computers, desks chairs, all the kids work,  there is nothing left, the buildings are being emptied on Monday, everthing dumped. We are apparently the hardest hit pirimary school and won't be open before September. That was very hard to take.

That's terrible, Jeannine- all that work you & the other staff have put in destroyed. :( I suppose from the kids' and parents' point of view it's a good time of year for it to happen, but I guess the staff will have to give up some of their hard-earned break to help get the school and themselves ready for September.

No doubt you will also have lost years of work that it will be difficult if not impossible to replace. That's very hard.

I am so, so sorry to hear about your lotties.  This is my first year of growing veg and you have given me some great advice (either directly, or by reading other threads).

I came on tonight to ask for help on some of my veg that have gone to pot due to the rain (I live in Brittany, we don't have the floods but it never stops raining).

It must be really difficult to deal with, especially when it's your passion.  I do hope that you and John manage to salvage something.

Even South Lincs is damp-I know this because they have stopped watering the spud fields.

Hi all

I've just popped online after a hectic week and spotted this thread. So sorry to hear  the bad news, all that hard work wasted.  :( It must be so disheartening.

I always think though that bad news always brings something positive to light too, so you just have to focus on the good things. The way everyone pulls together in a crisis is always so encouraging, bringing the community together and helping each other.

I will be glad to raid my seed box for anyone who needs some, perhaps there are things that can still be grown late in the season when you can get back onto your lotties.

hugs to all

Jayne
