Title: First interview in 9 years....
Post by: emmy1978 on June 07, 2007, 19:56:03
I am sooo nervous. Tomorrow - 3.30pm.

I've had part time jobs here and there - breeze them as they are so desperate for staff I could go in picking my nose and wearing pants on my head and get it - but this is a 'proper' job I actually want.

Have been onto totaljobs cramming swotty answers and thinking of good questions for the interviewer. Just making me more nervous so I am going to go and watch Springwatch now and forget about it.

Wish me luck.  ??? :-[ :-\ :'(

Hi Just wanted to wish you luck, and a tip that i always use smile! People remember people who smile, what's the job? Oh and if you can think of an answer to a question straight away repeat the question out loud it will give you time to think. ;D

Emmy I really wish you luck tomorrow and may I please share something with you that someone told me years ago.

On your interview you are trying to convince the interviewer that you are the right person for the job,you are in effect selling yourself, this is something most of us are not good at. So try imagining you are selling somebody else. If you were having a discussion with the interviewer about the merits of another person you knew who you were sure was good and you wanted them to get the job you would make a great job of selling them, so don't try to sell you....sell Emmy!!

It really does work,it is so much easier to discuss the merits of a friend instead of ourselves.

However I will be thinking of you, at 3.30, good luck sweetie XXXXX Jeannine

Wow Jeannine, that is such a good idea! Brilliant, will definately try that as you say, my nightmare is the whole 'sell yourself' thing. I could do it for anyone else in a heart beat though so thank you.  :)
I am a smiley little monkey anyway - that's part of my worry is that I  will smile like a loon through the whole thing and look like a gibbering fool.  :P

The job is relief worker at the family learning centre that i have used since my kids were babies for all my courses. It will be some admin and creche work, some adult learner support.

The job is great as it is fantastic all round experience for me, loads of training and development, term time and school hours only. So I can do my degree, look after my girls and work, which is a pretty good deal I reckon!  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks all. Will let you know if I fluff it or not!

Hey emmy, just wanted to wish you the best of luck tomorrow afternoon.  Good advice from Jeannine, i've never thought about interviews that way, but will next time!  I would also say smiling is important ;D , it makes you less nervous and they immediately think you're a friendly type of person too.

All the best honey, do let us know how you do x

EM,

Good luck, relax and try not to get 2 verbal as you might open your mouth 2 far and follow with your foot.

You want to have an air of confidence ( not arogance ) and you want to be professional and approachable.

If you ask you a question there wanting to A) get a sence of you character, b) there wanted to see how you communicate c) they want to see what experiance they bring to the role

Where possible apply examples of how you have resolved problems/confilcts/added leadership etc

It kind of depends on what the role requires.

DO NOT PUT YOURSELF UNDER 2 MUCH PRESSURE AS THIS WILL MAKE YOU PANIC AND YOU MIGHT NOT GIVE A GOOD ACCOUNT OF YOURSELF.

9 times out of 10 interviews are done using a score sheet so that they are scoring your answers so you need to make sure you get the maximum score for each question. Dont be afraid to take a moment to think of an answer rather than tell them the first thing that comes out of your mouth. That said sometimes this can also be the best answer but you need to stop and think.

Big hug for tomorrow.

Louise

good luck emmy.  i used to get jobs by chatting about eastenders !  i do NOT recommend this type of interview, the jobs were usually rubbish lol.

i got promotion back in february where they had a score sheet thingy, and if this doddering old fool can get through one, you'll do it with ease.

have a few really good practical examples tucked up your sleeve that are true !

apparently sipping water (while thinking of the answer to a question) doesn't actually buy you time, it dulls your brain, so just LOOK as if your taking a sip.

everything crossed here.

Good Luck.

I start work today at 10am .First in ages. So I know how nervous you must be feeling. Loads of good advice here and so many people wishing you all the best you will be ok.  Remeber as well to wear something you feel good and comfortable in.

As my sons says GO ON  YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!

Best of luck Emmay (and to Sajaself)

It helps that they already know you/know of you.

I am a HR person, and in my opinion the hardest interview questions are competency based ones - the can you give me an example of when you have juggled different priorities type.  Stick to a specific example, and don't generalise.  Have they given you a job description/person spec?  There should be some clues in there or in the advert?  Try and come up with examples for things that they may ask.  You can use home examples, doesn't have to be work based.  We are looking for transferrable skills, not examples of how you have done something great at work.  eg Give me an example of how you have brought a group round to your point of view - well the children are fighting over the tv, and I needed them to stop so I could cook tea.  I asked them what the problem was, got them to agree to watch one channel, whilst we recorded the other, peace was restored and I cooked tea on time.  Shows negotiation skills, communication, etc.  Conversely, I went into the room, cut the plug off the television, sent the crying children into the garden, and cooked tea in relative peace, interprets as willing to make unpopular decisions, with a can do approach!

Hope this helps, best of luck.

Good luck Emmy. You've got loads of good advice here. Remember to show how much you would like the job. If you think the job is good for you then you must realise that you have the skills to do it. Rehearse what you are good at and how it matches the job. I'll be thinking of you this afternoon. Go for it girl!!
Title: Re: First interview in 9 years....
Post by: Ceratonia on June 08, 2007, 09:54:31
I interview people for jobs quite a bit. Obviously, a lot depends upon the kind of job you're going for, but it's maybe worth seeing things from the interviewer's point of view. They'll have seen plenty of cvs/application forms and perhaps interviewed quite a few people. If they pick the wrong one, they may be stuck with someone unsuitable for years.

MrsKP (and Hex) both made very sensible points about being able to give examples of when you've done some specific thing. That's definitely something most interviewers will want to see. I wouldn't worry too much about being nervous, either - most people will notice and try to make allowances for it.

My real gripe as an interviewer is the people who turn up not having bothered to find out anything about the job. They're usually spending most of a day getting here and being interviewed, but they can't spend 20-30 minutes beforehand reading the stuff we send them? Or the people who lie on their cv and claim to have done something or have a particular technical skill and then when they turn up, say they don't really know much about it?

Anyway, good luck!

Thanks all!! What great advice.
I used to interview people too! Was nervous then.  ::)
Before Children I was very confident and all that. Being out of the game for a long time makes you feel like the world has moved on without you!
I know the organisation inside out and have a good understanding  of the job spec so it's all about putting myself across now.
Really really thanks all, your support is fantastic.
Big Loves and I'll let you know how I got on later.

Doop de doop.
Hi all.
Olive, I think it will be the same for me. I have one already for working in the school on my college placement so hoping that'll be enough for now. I have been buzzing all weekend. It feels exciting but scary to be going back to work.
I've been working to my own time for so long, if i wanted to do the garden or nip to the plot i could. At the same time I've always wanted to go back to work and that's what I've been studying for so I am looking forward to it. Plus...money for shoes and tools.  ;D ;D ;D

Hi Plotsurfer...is just brilliant at the lottie in the early evening isn't it? Empties your brain of all the crap from the day. Bit like surfing!  ;D
We go a lot late in the day as girls have their flowers and stuff to water and all the raspberries to pick and OH works till about 5.30-6pm. i will miss my mornings there on my own though.  :( I think i will still try to keep at least one morning a week free.  ;D

Good idea!

I don't think there's a time of the day that isn't good on the allotment!

Apart from perhaps when it's raining.

The best thing is going there after work and then picking something to eat for dinner...

Perfect.

I think surfing and allotmenteering have a lot in common (kind of)!

It doesn't have much in common with rugby though. Apart from the mud.

Well I nearly cried when pigeons ate my first ever cabbage plants!!

See, the similarities between the two are quite un-nerving!

Hope you stuck with the surfing - it's a great sport.
