Title: is there going to be a frost tonight?
Post by: queen of the cobs on May 28, 2007, 16:07:23
Looked like it on the weather I saw just now.  :(

Is everyone going to cover things up?

They said a minimum of 4 or 5 down here, I'm going to take a chance. If they'd said anything lower, I'd be worried.

4 tonight for us too.

After a very chilly start, had a lovely day on the lottie, just one downpour about 5pm ish.

But just had hail here at home.  :o  We thought we were seeing things.

Haven't planted my squash out on the lottie yet - have it all hardening off out in the gardening, so think I'll pop it all back in the coldframes for tonight then.  If everything'll fit!

Today, I saw that someone had planted out their sweetcorn on a Glasgow Allotment! It looked very unhappy in a very cold, biting North east wind.
As they say about humans, "ne'er cast a clout till May is oot", ( do not take off your woolly underwear till the end of May), semi-tropical plants would say the same, if they could talk!!

Don't think there will be a frost tonight but its very cold, wet and windy here. Kent.
All this talk has made me panic. I've  put my tomato's in hanging baskets, back in the cold green house for tonight. Keeping a eye on everything else.
Yes we had our summer in April!

It's overcast and a bit breezy here, so I'd say no chance of frost this time of year.

Forecasting 2 degrees here overnight, haven't planted anything tender out yet so no need to cover that. Am a bit worried about my fruit though, but too much to cover unfortunately. Have been picking strawberries for the last week, with all this rain I just hope it's cold enough to put the slugs off but not so cold as to damage the berries.

The Lovely Mr Sec on my lottie planted his sweetcorn out last weekend.  He's not been seen since !   :o  His sweetcorn was looking ok though.  Thankfully, I think he and me are in a sheltered spot on the site.

Which lottie were you on real food ?

"ne'er cast a clout till May is oot"

I thought this referred to the mae flower rather than the month of may? I could be wrong mind you ...  ;D

Coventry forecast has been for a frost tomorrow night, but just noticed that the latest update has indicated 1 C. Cold enough to be of concern, but little I can do.

It is currently 4 in my 'at home 'greenhouse. As I have just  re-sown about 60  of my collection of squash seeds after the vandals wrecked them a couple of weeks ago, and they are probably just germinating, I have given in and put the heater on.

 Funny year.

Oh, I am definitely a little worried here in Manchester, have had the heating back on indoors as it is so cold, haven't been over the plot today, but have a lot of things planted and coming up nicely, so I am just going to keep my fingers crossed because I could never bring them all back in....

Even the tomatoes in my back garden are just going to have to shiver ... and hopefully survive! Oh well that's English weather for you... I still have a suntan from April and now I have my thermals back on!

Frost in South of Ireland last night. Covered the outdoor toms, pumkin  and courgettes yesterday evening........glad I did now. I don't know how the potatoes faired though. Very confusing weather, I don't think I have ever seen a frost this late here before.

I think it's going to be colder tonight, if only because it looks like a clearer night - sigh. Am going to go to the plot in the next hour and check out the tender little things...

They're forecasting -3 here tonight; we might get a slight frost, but the urban heat island effect will make a big difference. The outskirts may well get frost.

Forecast is for -2 here at 3am tomorow morning.

Not taking any chances.have earthed up my maincrop spuds as much as posible and covered everything in the greenhouse with fleece.

Was going to plant out my runner beans today but they can wait.

Does anyone know anything about a site called Garden Action, according to them they can give you the first and last frosts for your town,I tapped in Hull and it said, last frost early May,first  frost mid October. They claim to be right 6 years out of 7

Mrs KP, I am on the Garscube Allotments.
Kitten, you may be right for England, but in Scotland I think that most people would say the Month of May. The concise Scots dictionary has no entry for Mae flower.
All I can say is I am very glad that all my semi-tropical stuff is still in the greenhouse or in the cold frame, and will stay there until the weather warms up a bit.

dont fancy having all my crops wiped out every 7th year

we plant second week of June, but walking around the plots last night there was a lot of unprotected runner beans

I think the Garden Action people are a bit vague...I mean I typed in my postcode (SE London) and they said last frost is probably end of May - ok, I know that already!

I find the Met Office very helpful in that they give an hour-by-hour forecast - well, in 3 hour chunks, but you get my drift, I hope?

There's often a cold spell around this time of year, so I wait till we get a mild spell around the first half of June before I start planting out. Looking at the weath forecast, I'll probably start putting stuff out next weekend. The very occasional late frost may catch me out - we had one on June 16th a couple of years ago - but it wasn't severe enough to do more than set some of my toms back a bit.
