Title: Spanish pass the parcel
Post by: Biscombe on May 25, 2007, 14:02:03
Feel's like I'm missing out on this pass the parcel thingy!! Sounds like fun  :D

Hows about me nipping off to the garden centre and getting, let's say 15 packets of new seeds and some from my collection and starting  another round? who's up for it?

Do I just send off the pack with the listed addresses and watch it's progress? easy as that??

Maybe the last person on the list takes more seeds cos the postage is a little more to Spain.................

10 people?

Have I got the right idea here? never played before  ;)

Sign me up girl  ;D... you need about a dozen names and addresses frim which you print off a list.  Enclose it with the packets and send it all off to the first name  on the list.

Eventually it gets back to you ... greatly changed :D ::)  ;D   ;)   :-*

Good idea Jeannine ...... but suggest Folks put a 24p x 2nd class UK Postage Stamp, otherwise the weight of coins will be heavier than the seeds  ;D

Lady of Spain .......  ;)  please put me on your list

Biscombe,

not to put a dampener on the idea, think it's great but ......... are there any potential problems mailing seeds across borders within the EU ?

hope all you good folks have a great weekend and those not in Spain .... have pullovers, Anoraks and Oilskins at the ready  ;)

Cheers

No problem Mikey, have done swaps all over the world and rarely get problems, and hey we've had rain for a week now! had to wear a cardi tonight  ::) !! nice not having to water the garden though! Just thought of something, I will be sending edibles and maybe some companion flowers, don't know until I have a look in my seed stash, but do I send stuff to sow in the near future or a mix, or does it not matter???

PS not forgot about posting the list of peeps, first in list for tomorrow xxx

OK  ;D bought 17 packets of not very common seeds from a few shops in town, I'll also add some from my own collection. We're up to 14 people now, room for one more. I still need a few addresses, when I get all the addys I'll post the parcel off (very excited!) the packets are full so shall we say try to leave as many varieties as you can for the next person, I'm sure there will be enough to go round........ anything else to suggest??

Rosy - I hope no-one clicked on the three crosses on your post from 22:59 last night. It comes up as a porn site, so I'd edit it pretty fast if I were you  :o.

Odd that two crosses are okay but three not.

Tricia

PS I didn't click on it - a balloon showing the name of the site comes up if you move the cursor over the three crosses.

Parcel arrived here safely yesterday. Apologies for not posting sooner but its my birthday this weekend and I was taken out for a birthday treat. A real treat this afternoon though rummaging through all the goodies, some really unusual varieties. I have rewrapped and will beposting on tomorrow morning so should be in Cambridge on Tuesday.

Full marks to Flowerlady - brown paper packages tied up with string these are one of my favorite things ......now where I have heard that before? Did explain to the postman that this was a seed swap though just in case.

well this box aint gonna do nuffink to aswage (is that a real word or did i make it up) your addiction. ;D. i had such fun going through it all last night whilst watching springwatch. i took a little pinch of lots and put more in than i took out. i think everyone so far has put in loads more than they have taken so those patient souls at the end of the list will have a great seed feast. thanks for organising it biscombe, i never joined one of these before because i always thought i had all the seeds i needed.  ha ha ha ha ha ha. ;D ;D

Guess what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It arrived here Saturday, well done Sarah, it just stopped a wee while here to unload a bit and  be fed and it has already been posted at Mikey at 11am today. It is moving quick, wondering if Mikey should bypass Stocko as he has gone away today I beieve????? Pick him up when he gets back perhaps.

I removed a large bag of seeds, they look like squash it may say Jaspee de Vendee, writing is in red. I think they are homesaved and they have been packed fresh . Very mouldy smell when I opened the parcel. The seeds are very mouldy and the note inside is too and barely readable. I took them out as I was nervous they would comtaminate the others.

I am going to rinsethem in a mild bleach, then dry them, they may make it if the mildew has not got through the seed case yet, but they are a tad sticky..There is quite a big bag we can figure out what to do with them.

Jeannine and fellow Seed addicts,

parcel arrived here this morning at 11:00 hrs, an especially good service from Jeannine in Hull, the Posties are still using handcarts and horses over there ..... ;D

I was taking advantage of the calm between the rainstorms and planting out Runners and climbing French Beans, when the parcel arrived. I had forgotten about Spanish PTP, thought box was my new 'Harry Potter' book from Amazon .... then saw Gaffer Tape and knew it was a Seed Red Cross parcel from Hull  ;D  (welcome back Gaffer tape, all is forgiven  ;D)

Have not been on A4A for a while, busy in Garden and Lottie (and helping youngest Son with house move) so out of touch with current A4A news.

Jeannine,  Lee Stocko, I will 'skip' him and send on to Jo9919, will someone make sure the parcel gets sent to Lee when he returns home ?  (I have his real name so have put it on the distribution list)

Also have added a blank page to allow for all the comments.

Wow ...... what a parcel, Christmas really has come early. Warning about the Spanish seed packets, the Chervil packet had come apart and distributed it's contents within the box, nothing lost (ythanks to good packing) so have shook out seed and re-packed into original packet then a good Sellotaping.

Sorry I will not get the parcel back in the post today, but will for sure on Tuesday 19 June (big box means I have to go into 'Town' to post)

Ooh you cheeky monkey, I especially didn't use so much tape this time too!!

I agree we use handcarts still (usually by moonlight with furniture on) but the 'orses can go like Red Rum if it is important enough.

I must have missed that leaky one, I did seal a few that were stapled.

You have given yourself away now though Mikey, I always thought your piorities were admirable, but Harry Potter versus seeds. I think you need a holiday north of the river to get your 'ed back on straight.

Enjoy sorting, and don't read that ruddy book if it comes second post till you are done !!!

Harry Potter versus seeds ..... no contest ..... Harry wins every time (after all, with magic he can do anything !!!!  ;))

The Rag and Bone man in Louth was Potty 'arry. I got my wedding suit from him for five bob and he bought it back next day for half a Dollar, one of the best deals I ever did  ;D the licence cost me 7/6d and the Church Bells were £5 so I got the whole package for £5.10 shillings. Cost a wee bit more over the years since then  ;D but OH is well worth it, she is a Gem, I am so lucky, God Bless Her .... (just playing safe in case she gets on to A4A, I am a devout coward and I bruise and bleed easily  ;)

Cheers all

PS my mistook, Harry Potter book is due in July (not June) these stories are far too good for little Adults, they should be restricted to 'wrinklies' only  ;)

XX Jeannine

Hi Jeannine,

I saved that variaty but i did not remember putting some in the swap. I have just smelled my seeds and there fine so i have no idea how this moldy bag turned up and i tend to use blue or black pen so not sure how they got there.

it was in there when i recieved it but i didnt think they were too bad, i took a few to sow. i couldnt read the writing but they werent sticky and didnt small mouldy, but you probably did the right thing.  i am going to sow mine in a bit.  :)

No probs, they were damp still.

I have dried out the note inside, they are Jaspee, the note has been written on both sided and as the red ink has smudged it is difficult to read, on one side what I can see though is ...cut today 7/06/07...wonderful flavour,
On the other side I can make out what I think is  Jaspee de Vendee, enjoy, one of the most versatile, photo, saved for this swap, I can't make out any more, but I have rinsed them in a mild bleach and they are drying off, then I will get them off to someone, maybe I can catch up the parcel , there is quite a big bag.

I would second the description, it is a wonderful squash, one I like very much.

I think being in the zippie damp for sometime it has developed mould but the kernels inside the seed cases   seem unhurt.

If I can just stop the mildew.

I will give it my best shot and get back to you all.

XX Jeannine

Sarah, did you see who they were from, maybe they were still Ok by the time they got to you. It doesn't take much once they are damp and the heat is right.

Hi, Flo, not pointing fingers darling, even the tiniest trace of moisture would start again given the posting and being wrapped up tight for ages. They are safe and I think well. I will give them another couple of days and post them back to the parcel and back track to see if anyone who has already had the parcel wants a few.

They are nice  though,I would suggest everyone had a few.

I was a bit concerned in case they were from a Supersprout squash .

Hows things, how many squash are you growing this year,I seem to be stopped at every stage this year, The vandals got the first lot,I have re sown and have them all ready to go out, but the ground is flooded. I will lose them in the pots soon .

Take care, XX Jeannine

Hi Folks,

parcel 'raided' and re-loaded and within the hour will be on it's way to Crimple Green  (sounds like a lovely Lettuce ... or a Village near Trumpton  ;) ;D)) should be there Wednesday morning.

Sorry but I have unthinkingly (is that a proper word ?) put the weight up above 1 Kilo, thus postage has increased from £2.92 (when Jeannine posted to me 971 grms) to £4.25 onwards from me (1097 grms). The extra weight is French Beans, which I highly recommend, grew them all last Season for the first time.

After I had got the parcel all beautifully wrapped and taped up, I realised .... if I had put French Beans in a seperate padded bag I could have sent 250 grms for only 70 pence instead of paying £1.33 for 116 grms

It's not the money (honestly  ;)) it's the principle which annoys me, paying the Royal Mail for 'nothing'

Seeds are wonderful, really had to control myself, a few Herbs, some Lettuce and Tomato seeds.

Thanks to Biscombe for the work and organisation, appreciated

Ha, ha, Mikey.

I've heard people say that Crimple Green sounds like Crinkley Bottom (Noel Edmund's show), and that it sounds like crimpolene (horrible itchy material) before, but never a lettuce, I like that given my new growing skills  :P  Don't know about Trumpton though, I quite think it sounds a little more up-market than Trumpton, what about Camberwick Green??? :-\ :-\ :-\

I'll be watching out for Mr. Postie in the morning and I'll get the parcel back in the post as soon as I can (probably not tomorrow as it's half-day closing at the post office tomorrow).

Aaaaah .... Debs, another of my 'wizzard' plans doomed to failure  ;D

I know exactly what you mean, glad I am not starting out in a career right now. In my time (Violins fade up in background  ;)) cash was tight and parents helped me out with essentials until I finished my Apprenticeship, spent 10 shillings a week on Baccy, Birds and Booze and wasted the rest  ;D

I married a Theatre Sister (way back when Emperor Hadrian was building a wall up North somewhere  :P)
OH actually had money in the Bank God bless her, I was Church Mouse poor at the time, so she bought our wedding ring.

Nurses are a wonderful breed, none like e'm, salt of the Earth  (seriously --- not kidding)  8)

We should leave this topic right there, before someone sends me an electronic smacked wrist .... probably not the proper place for general chit-chat anyway ;D

good luck and take care

Parcel arrived safely and very well wrapped today.  ;D ;D ;D

It's fantastic. Loads of seeds, and I would have taken more than I have if only I had a Lottie to plant them all in. As it is, I'm only growing in containers, so have resisted the urge to take a few of everything  :P

If it's OK with everyone, I will post to the next on the list on Friday. I have seeds to pop in to the parcel (well, box now), but nothing to put them in, so hubby is bringing me some packets home from work tomorrow.

Hope this is OK, and thank you so much for organising this swap. The Spanish seeds look excellent, and I can see that everyone else has put plenty in there too, it will be a great parcel when it arrives back in Spain  ;D

I think the squash seeds that I kept back to dry off will be Ok to rejoin the parcel now, just so I get it right.

These seeds missed Mikey and Jo9919, I think that is all. So of you two can PM me if you would like a few I will send them direct to you, the rest I will send straight to Debster ,who will need to send me her address ASAP. Deb don't pass on the parcel till these seeds catch up.Then I think it is covered.

Please let me know today so I can get it sorted.

Hi, you might be OK if the weather is with you, but start them now, is we have an early damp autumn they may not mature but you can use the immature ones like courgettes. Whatever you have in the garden squashwise will all have to come out as the first frost approaches, irrespective on when you planted them.  Bear in mind the winter ones will store over the winter, not grow, and the summer ones do not store. Hi all,

Got in from work at 3 pm today and naughty hubby kept me guessing if the parcel had arrived.  Sat down with a cuppa and looked on the mantlepiece and WOW  :o a HUGE parcel was sitting there!!

I've just finished looking through the fantastic selection of seeds and have put some more back in and it's now well taped up and ready to be sent to Deb P tomorrow.

A big thanks to you Rosie and to everyone else for a lovely selection of seeds.

A very happy Linda   ;D ;D

I reckon I put about the same in as out seedwise, but did put in some peas and quite a few paper packets which were a bit heavier than the seeds I took out and decanted into my own little envelopes.

The postage to send was £5 first class, same as Linda Tal so I think I've kept it even! (but that box is really full now!) 8)

i just heard on the radio that the post is on strike from midnight again tonight so the parcel may take a while to get back. i was part of this parcel early on and have really enjoyed following its progress and everyone getting excited about it.  i felt like i wanted to be like on one of those old fashioned school photos where the exposure took so long you could run from one end of the line to the other and be inthe frame twice.  maybe if its still bulging at the seams biscombe could split it in two and start it off again? just an idea. someone in another parcel thread auggested an ever lasting seed parcel, a bit farfetched maybe but a lovely idea; we could see how long we can keep it going.

Happy is not the word!! I'm over the moon!!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I can't believe the amount of seeds to choose from (and specials from Jeannine!) I could never use all those seeds myself, and feel greedy keeping them!!!  so.......... I'ts a good idea to keep it going, sad for it to stop now!! Busy at the moment so I'll send it on again early September, and get a list going now.

You have all been troupers, what stars you are!! I have loved watching the progress of the parcel, thanks for playing!!

I'll also start another Spanish pass the parcel in January! time for early sowing!! I'll start hitting the garden centres now!!! (what a drag eh  ;) ;) ;) ;D)

Sounds soppy, but what better seeds can you put in you garden than the ones from the wonderful peeps on this site!!!!

PS Thanks for the euros too, It'll go towards posting on again! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
