Post by: Marymary on May 16, 2007, 16:54:41
Two lovely female flowers on a round, green courgette and not a male in sight!  ;D

VERY early - & unusual. Mostly the male is first!

Could be that they will self-fertilise?

As Tim says odd, you usually get a flush of Male flowers before the females...

Please TG blow some of that pollen this way.  :)

I have always had loads of male flowers on all my courgettes first & usually waited ages for the first female.   Certainly is a weird year.

Well there is a book on the go written by a geneticist, claims males will redundant before too long, I forget the title,he apparently puts up a good case too.He says it has already happened it some species and it happening more all the time.So maybe we will become self pollinating too girls.   Mmmm even at my age I am not too excited about that idea.XX Jeannine

Well, I have never noticed a difference between the male and female flowers, I just think... oooh! how pretty and then get tasty courgettes! Will look a bit closer when they flower and see if I can tell the difference... and Jeanine, self-pollinating sounds interesting to me, but a male always comes in handy! Lin

Marymary - I'm not sure you need to worry about the fella being late, by the looks of your photo there are already courgettes forming just behind the flowers!

Way to go girls - who needs men!
